BTW I could not help myself but say that "The dance Electric" seems to be inspired by the very same thing as "Thriller"
Especially drums part |

Got the leak, within the 'community'. Pretty underwhelming to be really honest. Didn't think much of the remaster and the edit's well we've got them everywhere already. Nice to have Wonderful ass in good quality. I cant really say there were any stand-outs. We can fuck, well i personally prefer the later version and having computer blue full halway version is nice also.
Not to be a downer but I think maybe the 40th anniversary edition will be something to look forward to - this feels rushed and over looked. next ..... |

I'm giddy with this. Having these songs released is hugely meaningful. Thrilled that "We Can Fuck" extends on that amazing "you can blow the candle out" part of the released version with some very interesting arrangements. Thrilled that long favorites like "The Dance Electric" and "Computer Blue (Hallway speech) version" are finally seeing an official release in such good quality. And are those extra drums and vocal ad libs in "The Dance Electric"? Already completely floored by "Electric Intercourse" and "Father's Song". Love the manic energy of "Love and Sex" and the sweet throwaway whimsy of "Katrina's Paper Dolls". By the way, my wife totally nailed the fact that the verses in "Katrina's Paper Dolls" are quite similar to those in "Gotta Stop (Messin' About)". Tickled that we have this new, strange version of "Possessed". I may not like it as much as the vocal version we already knew, but I'll give it time. What a pleasure to hear these songs. Just as I unfortunately predicted, the Paisley Park Remaster sounds HORRIBLE. Very compressed and horribly brickwalled to the point that you can hear the audio clip in some parts (ending of Let's Go Crazy for example). Here's a sample of the waveform of LGC. Top is the 2015 Remaster, bottom is the from the 2011 Reissue mastered by Kevin Gray (ripped from my personal vinyl copy).
As you can see, there's a night and day difference. Then again, i'm not surprised considering how compressed and brickwalled Prince's music has been since the mid 90's that the remaster he supervised would sound this bad. But I hoped it wouldn't. Oh well.

Just because the audio signal is more compressed, that doesn't mean it's worse. The new remaster has far more clarity than previous versions, from what I've listened to so far.
It's the B-sides and outtakes discs that's marred with real sound issues. [Edited 6/21/17 7:55am] Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain. |

Man, this would really suck if I listened to music with my eyes. Thankfully I don't and this 2017 version "All That" as Carmen would say. |

It's the B-sides and outtakes discs that's marred with real sound issues. [Edited 6/21/17 7:55am] Tested the two side by side with Sennheiser 598's, the sound quality of the 2011 issue is much more dynamic, clear, and lively than the 2015 Remaster. IMO the remaster sounds sterile and less enjoyable (due to clipping). And of course, compression doesn't make audio sound worse (The 1991 MFSL release of Stevie Wonder's Innervisions is louder that the original release, but is the best sounding version of that album), but they went overboard with this remaster. |

sorry - but RIP from vinyl (unless done by laser) could not be judged as clear version (it might have been processes certain way) Also frequency range on vinyl is WAY different from thechnology point of view - so I could not imagine how remaster supervised by Prince might be inferior to VInyl RIP |

I think there should be a thread for those wishing to discuss the actual sound of the release, one for the packaging and one for the songs.
We'll be talking about The Beatles again before you know it. [Edited 6/21/17 8:05am] |

Yep. I was hoping for the '83 version, but to finally have the '86 version in good quality is nice enough I guess... |

Oh, boo hoo. It might not make a lot of sense to put that version on this release, but that version kicks ass and I'm glad that we're finally getting it in high quality. Don't buy the fucking thing if it's that awful to you I understand why fans would be frustrated about certain aspects of this release, but jesus christ, some of y'all are embarrassing yourselves and acting like spoiled bratty kids. The booklet says Wonderful Ass is from 84, if I see it corretly in the unboxing video. We might have been mistaken all this time in thinking that it was from 86. |

Track by track first impressions:
The Dance Electric - BEAST! I could dance to that groove all day. The quality is not perfect but quite enjoyable. Spiritually inspired Prince is my favorite Prince. It wasn't until after he passed that I noticed how much death was a theme in his music.
Love And Sex - Classic Revolution tune. Those vocals! I love how they all count it off, instead of just him. The coughing sound from the '84 live version of Possessed found a place on this studio recording. "Love and sex in the upper room." The 'let's all fuck before we die' message is so Prince. I love that it doesn't remind me of any other Prince tunes. Classic! And the sound quality is great!
Computer Blue (Hallway Speech) - Sound quality is nice! I noticed a bit of drop out, shortly after the Father's Song part starts, so it seems like maybe it's not perfect. Could be my temporary listening set up though. But it's good enough to still be highly enjoyable. Ugh...missing Prince now. Could this be THE quintessential Revolution song? I used to think it was America. Maybe not.
Electric Intercourse - Essential inclusion. Love that it's a version nobody knew. Sound is great. Still think it sounds demo-ish, not in a bad way though.
Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden - Our Destiny sound is still abysmal. The symbol crashes actually make me wince. Shouldn't have been included. I'll have iTunes start it with Roadhouse, and just forget Our Destiny exists. Roadhouse isn't perfect but at least it doesn't incite a negative physical response.
Possessed - AHHHH! So glad it's this version. I love how it's almost lightweight and spare, with the falsetto vocal, and the beat hinting at something funky about to bubble over, constrasted with the live version that seems to be more of a straightforward funk jam. The synth horn arpeggiation breakdown is everything!! And when the kick joins in at the end?? Dead! Love the bridge! "Have U ever had the feeling that someone was tearing U up into little bitty pieces, and contemplating selling U for a jigsaw puzzle?" Okay, surely it can't get any better than this.
Wonderful Ass - This is maybe my favorite previously unreleased song of all time. So it's great to have it sounding so great. But I thought this wasn't supposed to be the '86 revamp? Sounds the same to me on first listen.
Velvet Kitty Cat - Inferior sound. I swear I hear tape hiss. I mean it's novelty number, so I guess it doesn't matter as much to me. Still not as bad as Our Destiny.
Katrina's Paper Dolls - The only song I've never even heard a lick of. Sounds like it belongs with Velvet Kitty Kat. Maybe from the same tape, too? Sounds like a Prince protege song. Very grateful to have it. It's cute! I thought it was going to be darker from previous descriptions. But it's bouncy and light.
We Can Fuck - Whoa! It sounds so different! I didn't realize he was using finger cymbals already back then. "I know the smell of desire, and honey, it's all over U." NICE! Sounds like his drumming. OMG....the breakdown. It's taking me back to the first time I heard the end of Do Me Baby. Like I'm listening in on something I shouldn't be. AHHH...this dialogue is classic. ESSENTIAL. I feel like he did take the song further, eventually, and it became more realized as a song over the years. But the officially released version is missing such an important part!! So glad to have it now!
Father's Song - Perfect ending. It provides a great moment to reflect on what his music and life meant to you. Especially coming immediately after such a vulnerable, yet perverse moment like the latter half of We Can Fuck. What a force he was. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide." |

FYI It's leaked, in mp3 form at least. I've not listened to the soundtrack, but I'm on the vault. I can't get past "The Dance Electric". As noted, it's a beast!!!! This should have been square on anything he was thinking of for a Roadhouse Garden album. All that fluff that the public heard with ATWIAD & Parade, this would have shut them the fuck up. Obviously, the 11-minute version would have been the 12" version, and hot damn. Shoula coulda woulda - it's a damn aural orgy. He must have really loved Andre to give this one up. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |
