I just got home so I can finally listen to this properly and, my word, what a hauntingly beautiful piece of music.
Really different from what I expected I thought it was going to be similar to God, progressively getting 'bigger'. Yet he went for a very atmospheric feeling, reminiscent of Vangelis, as some people have mentioned.
It is interesting, now that we have Father's Song and Electric Intercourse (which I also absolutely love) and they both sound so different to what we thought they'd sound like, to think of what that hypothetical album recorded between 1999 and PR would have sounded like, or whether he would have explored more this kind of sound, hadn't The Revolution taken a more prominent role in Prince's music. We will never know, I guess.
I am a happy fan though - if the rest of the songs we don't know are on this level and the sound of the ones we know already is this clear, we are in for a treat...

His softly-spoken "OK" at the end of Father's Song was very sweet.
Appropriate release for Father's Day.

The original late '83 track sequence for PURPLE RAIN had Father's Song as the last track on the eight track album...after Baby I'm A Star (and I Would Die 4 U and Purple Rain).

That would have been a strange and haunting way to end the album, huh?

The song is a gorgeous peice of music, in my opinion. It feels very Prince-y, very 1982-1984, but yet like all great art, oddly timeless.

I'd LOVE for it to be used in a movie or premium cable series. That would be an interesting homage.

Wow! The last track after Purple Rain? That would have been cool! The estate should look at rearranging track listings in the future for future releases.

I don't often post. HOWEVER, I HAD to regarding this topic. I've been anxiously awaiting a longer/official version of this forever! I wanted this to be played as my Daddy walked me down the aisle (I think I may have posted that several years ago). Sadly, my Daddy passed away in December. How ironic that THIS is the track they "released" just before my first Fathers Day without him. I am sitting at my desk (work) trying to fight back tears but I can't stop hitting repeat. After a long wait and great expectations, I am not disappointed in the full version and cannot wait to get the PR Deluxe Set.

Thank you! It's been hard, I'm a Daddy's girl through and through. Our man PRN's music has been getting me through.

Yeah, and played Purple Rain by ear after listening to W&L's tape though. AKA one of the best parts of the movie imo.

He just went straight into Computer Blue after the fathers Song segment

'The Kid' in the movie plays Father's song on guitar during Computer Blue after the scene with his Father playing it on piano and telling him the difference between Father and son is that he never wrote any of the songs down on paper, asserting he had an ability the son did not have.

Hey Polo. I get that. I understand he used the song as a driving guitar meoldy in Computer Blue. Really I do. What we were discussing was Moonbeam stating the film showed him learning it by ear which was mistaken and Moonbeam stated he made a mistake and meant another song. And I wasnt clowning him but was even checking my own memory that I may have missed this part. So we got it all figured out, as stated in posts prior to this. And yes, I understand the revelation in the movie about what it meant that Francis L DID write 'em down man as well as the father-son dynamic.

not sure about the attempt at the brush drums either, sound a bit half arsed (or is it just noise frim Prince moving?. (i like the drums when they come back at the end - more pronounced) or could it be prince kicking the pedals like on How Come u Don't Call me?

Sounds like pedal kicking/lid knocking to me.

Also it slightly irritates me that a couple sources (PrinceVault included) state Prince played this in the movie after discovering his father's sheet music even though the father is the one playing it.

I love it. I always love hearing the more experimental & expressive side of Prince.

.

Count me as another fan of Vangelis & other film composers that heard those influences in "Father's Song". It's always great to hear Prince experimenting with forms other than pop perfection.

.

I kept wanting it to build to the rising plateau like it does in the Computer Blue interpolation, but what it does do is even better (deferring to Prince's choices there).

.

Fantastic to have this additional documentation of 1999/PR era.

I don't think those were Prince's active influences in making the arrangements for his Father's piano playing. I think that is where the music 'took' him per se not an effort to graft a sound he heard another composer use. A lot of times musicians can copy each other or do a similar song or arrangement without any knowlege of each others work. Originators of musical ideas can always be traced back to a source by fans but artists, while they are in the work process, are ususally not in the 'know' that what they are creating has aspects of someone else's work. Musicians are notorious for wanting to keep their ears clean of other sound, lots of times similarities are by accident.

Love it.

I find some of the synth choices very similar to Howard Jones' original long version of Hide & Seek, which was recorded the same month, but neither Howard's or Prince's work were released at the time so it coincidence, and telling of the tech at the time.

WE CAN FUCK... I'm pretty sure extended Computer Blue the quality will be unheard, but we've basically heard the entirety of it with all the bootleg releases of the numerous Computer Blue extended versions out there...

Father's Song - as with Electric Intercourse - doesn't sound like I expected it to. Prince says 1999 was influenced by Vangelis, and it really sounds like he was influenced by him here. It is really a beautiful piece of music. Exactly the sort of thing I've always hoped the vault is full of - it's atmospheric and full of emotion, Prince just being out there. The sound quality is really good too.

The atmospheric synth heavy production is similar to Electric Intercourse, and the two tracks compliment each other very well when played side by side. With these two tracks and The Dance Electric, I can sort of hear what an alternate album of music might have sounded like around this period.

And to my it sounds like he says, 'You can start panicking now' at the start.

You can definitely hear the influence right here. You just can't beat those old analog synths.

I remember as a kid hearing those synths and it just sounded like the past, present, and future all at once. It would just get your imagination going. hearing Father's Song just brought it all back. Thank you, Prince.

As of right now, I'm excited about Father's Song, because I still haven't listened to it. Any of the tracks I haven't heard at all, just because I haven't heard them: Love and Sex, Katrina's Paper Dolls. One of the others might be different enough from versions I know to shock and surprise me, but I'm not anticipating that. Admittedly, I didn't expect Electric Intercourse to be much like it actually was, so who knows? I might be surprised again.

I'm honestly hoping pretty hard for a good core album mastering--I know many are already assuming it's not going to be, but I'm still hoping--and my ears and equipment arent' great, so even if there's something to complain about, I might not know the difference.

ive heard OD/RG and EI live through the years so Fathers Song was the first new one Ive heard without any previous leggage. Pleasantly suprised(with RD/OD EI as well even though Ive heard them) so Im with you about the excitement. Im not to psyched for KP or Love & Sex cause they dont piuque my interest so maybe I'l be pleasantly surprised too.

Love and Sex
We Can Fuck
Katrina's paper dolls
The Dance Electric
Possessed
Wonderful Ass
Computer Blue extended
Velvet Kitty Cat

But excited to hear it all together as an album experience most.

Also will be good to see Syracuse again after all these years. That concert is what made me a fan.

I keep forgetting about the remaster.

According to the lenght and the fact that it is publicized as "never listened before", I would bet it is the version that inspired the live version at the June 7th 1984 First Avenue show.

But I could be wrong.

On a side note, my favourite is the original 1983 "slower" version.

But whatever it will turn out to be, I will be happy the same.

It's the 1984 version, the one that was played in the background of the scene when Morris Day talks to Apollonia in Purple Rain. The 1983 version clocks in at around 8:40.
