Totally agree with this comment. Prince sabotaged his own career by openly going against the stream. I'm sure that position alllowed him to sleep at night, knowing he was true to himself, and from the very beginning at that. That's why he was "feared" in the music industry. he took a stance and was in the process of helping others, younger musicians, take a stance also. That in itself is a very dangerous and daring position.

.

Oh please, as if any younger artist looks at Prince's career of the past two decades as a guiding light.

They should, some of them won't be lucky enough to have a career as long as Prince.

Great another rehash of the same hits collections of 1982 - 1992 Warners material we all have umpteen copiesof. I think I may even pass here.

Remastered Purple Rain is worth a lokk, but how about remastered Sign o the Times?

The boycott is real!

We have these songs numerous times over. The pics in the booklet will be all over the net in a hot minute, if they havent shown up on the multiple pic threads already. We all have heard ML (not a great song), and that will even be on the net soon thereafter. No reason to buy this duplication overload. I didnt mind supporting Prince. Bought EVERYTHING officially released. That stopped in April.
Its time to be selfish. Its all about me now.

If you don't support new releases, or, say, go to Paisley Park- you're not doing your part to keep his music and legacy alive and everything's going to disappear. Prince will be nothing but a name of the past like Otis Redding or Barry White.

Or, Princes legacy can be as rich or vibrant as Elvis or Sinatra. It's funny that fans who have bought PR on vinyl then casette, then CD, then download whine about a new Compilation, because they have the tracks already. Hypocrites! haha

There would still be a sense of sheer delight if we could hear one of his great but less known songs - outside of the over-played MBGITW - when turning the radio on and if one way to do that was to make him enter the charts, then what the heck, it's not going to hurt anyone either is it? Prince himself seemed to attribute some importance to recognition and even sometimes put his fans under the spotlight by inviting them onstage to dance with him, why not do the same for him by ensuring he continues to be under that well deserved spotlight. When you have a beautiful artwork in your possession, you don't just hide it in the garage do you?

Well, I will be doing my part. I have every release and Moonbeam on many bootlegs so most people I know would laugh at me for dropping $20+ on a greatest hits package. But I do want to support Prince releases and continue to have every release so I will be buying it anyway.

That's not really the point though. The point is that how well a Prince album sells should have zero effect on a fan's opinion of that album. Sales and popularity should be irrelevent to us all.

I myself will find it hard to re-buy all the stuff I already have, and that is why I think a one song campaign could be easier for fans who want to make a difference without having to spend too much money again. Having said that, this greatest hits album can still be a perfect end of year gift for non-fans, and perhaps a starting point for those who will want to discover the actual albums.

And as Dibblekins already said, a re-newed popularity is also a means of spreading the joy and to renew people's interest in his music, especially from younger generations rather than a way to validate his already recognised talent as an artist.

That is true, but for the last 20 or so years of that career he was heavily dependent on his extraordinary ability as a live performer (the best ever, IMHO) and his back catalogue. Without those, and his reputation and well earned status, he would really have struggled. Hell, he did struggle to remain relevant even with all of that.

Releases via alternate channels make this '4ever' and PR 'remastered' feel like meh.

Unless PR has some exquisite versions of songs we know or maybe even stuff we do not know it is in the same category as '4ever'.

Exactly my thoughts as well.

About 4Ever: I placed my order, just to obtain that one unreleased song. So WB did their job right (typing this with a very sarcastical expression on my face) to get the die hard fans on board.
For the casual listener or for those who want to surprise their loved ones with this amazing compilation (yuk!!) the upcoming holiday season is the perfect marketing strategy.

Why wait with a another hits compilation like this one? They could have done this trick within the same week P passed away.

In stead they wait until the exact start of the season. How obvious. P's death as a marketing tool.

Cold.

So? Most artist now make their living off live performing. People are not buying cd like that in most cases and in some cases they don't want to buy downloads either. Why is it a crime to dependent on his back catlalogue? These young artist would sell their soul to devil for his back catalogue. He created these songs and their were his to play as he saw fit. Greatest hits compilations are all about the music labels. It has nothing to do with the artist.
The more greatest hits compilations are issued, the worse is the state of success from that artist. Or the artist is dead. As is the case here.

From here it's a small step to a Christmas album. Or as someone said in the TV series 'Vinyl': "Christmas albums is where artists bury their careers".

Looking forward to the new track.

Would have been cool if it went up to date a bit more, even a token effort. The addition of something like..

TMBGITW

Musicology

Black Sweat

4ever (just for title track potential)

1000 x's and o's

...in place of some of the WB tracks so its still 40 songs just to show he was still producing great music post 1993!

One could argue the opposite, that they waited six months (to the day, I think) to announce this, out of respect and so as to not look like they were trying to monetize the tragedy.

Either way, all signs point to P being on board with this release so it'd be crazy for WB not to get it out there.

My only two thoughts are that I always like a chronological order to greatest hits and if this isn't available to stream on Spotify etc it will all be over by the end of December as it will be past CD buying time then.

I'll buy it . I guess I'll be buying it for the high quality version of "Moonbeam Levels". I still want to know if the version of nothing compared to u is indeed the studio version with prince vocals and not the LIVE prince/Rosie Gaines duet

I'm thinking it's going to be the same live version of Nothing as the release is heralding only one unreleased vault song, Moonbeam levels.

I read the lyrics already and that's the reason I wanted them to appear on this thread. I just have hard time doing it myself on this Android. I want others to be aware of the lyrics. Prince in the song that he's looking for a better place to die and then he really don't want to die

Lyrics - Moonbeam Levels - by Prince - 1982

Yesterday I tried 2 write a novel but I didn't know where 2 begin
So I laid down in the grass tryin' 2 feel the world turn
Boy loses girl in a rain storm, nuclear World War iii
All that's left is pain and sorrow, as far as he's concerned

Chorus:
He says please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me
Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me
Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me
Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me
I'm lookin' 4 a better place 2 die

Maybe he's lookin' 4 a different world
Maybe he's lookin' 4 a brand new high
Maybe he would like a nice condo overlookin' the rings of Saturn
Maybe he wants affection instead of a plastic life
Maybe he doesn't know what he wants at all

Chorus

A newborn child knows nothing of destruction
Nothing of love and hate
What happens in between is a mystery
Because we don't give a damn about his fate

He said he'll never keep diaries 2 learn from his mistakes
Instead he'll just repeat all the good things that he's done
Fight 4 perfect love until it's perfect love he makes
When he's happy then his battle will be won (It's never 2 late)

Chorus:

Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me
(Send your.. Send 2 me)
Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me
(Send your levels 2 me)
Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me
(Sending me your.. Send 2 me)
I'm lookin' 4 a better place 2 die (Better place 2 die)

Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me (Oh yeah!)
Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me {x2}

It's funny that fans who have bought PR on vinyl then casette, then CD, then download whine about a new Compilation, because they have the tracks already. Hypocrites! haha Let's show WB & other labels there's a market for Prince

Oh okay then, we don't like the concept, but many of us will still end up buying it anyway. I know I will because I am just a mugu (Nigerian 419 term meaning the one being scammed) who will buy anything with Prince's name on it. But Warners to start respecting the fans more and stop dangling these carrots in front of us (39 songs we all have in multiple forms and 1 unreleased nugget, most of us with extensive boot and unrelased jam collections already have anyway).

.

I think Warners needs to stop going after new fans so much, the newbie overload after his death has died down and left us with some new geniune fans, but many of the fairweather ones like the fairweather fans who bought Purple Rain (As Prince said, dug it because it was a hit), will fade and not buy hits collection after hit collection.

.

WB will win more over by releasing a 40 hit selection of post 1994 material or even if Tyka or someone else could get NPG records to put out a collection of TAFKAP, Symbol and later Prince songs - that would sell.

.

The newbie approach ahs not worked, as re releases of his WB albums on CD have not sold well beyond the entry level Very best of and some copies of The Hits and Ultimate. Hits was at least decent as we got the disc of B sides and lets face it, those B sides were good, and Ultimate gave us the gimmick of 12 inch mixes on Disc 2, which again were dope, but this new one has 1 song!!

.

Not many copies of the albums have sold and one person mentioned that Warners must realise Prince is an artist with a mostly aging fanbase, just like MJ.

.

The MJ marketing thing has been better, with only 2 official releases - the patchy Michael 18 months after his death (Which had 3 songs, that were likely not MJ vocals) and the fairly good Xscape, which was mostly Invincible era out takes and some dreadful remixes. But then you have This is it and Icon along with re releases of classic albums and documentaries. They are decent and I thought Bad25 was good and even this year's off the wall experience. But in reality they were not huge sellers (Even a JT plug for Xscape was not that successful), so overdoing Prince may not serve WB well, especially as MJ was a bigger seller overall with a wider fan base.

.

Still, let us hope Warners does not bring in Remixers and Producers and Pitbull/William type people crucifying songs like "Yeah yo, yo yo Prince reprasentin niggas, got my ice and champaine and cream, aoowwoooo nigga" Please no.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I do think it is a little dangerous for Warners to always highlight a narrow slice of Prince's career.

.

For example, by always ignoring tracks from The Gold Experience, this will make casual listeners ignorant of that era. If Warners then wished to release a Gold Experience deluxe edition, it would pick up less interest.

.

Warners know that the casual buyer will be attracted to the bigger hits, so this is a good opportunity to sneak in the lessor known singles.

.

This will then educate the listener to Prince's later work / albums with Warners.

.

Just a thought.

More info: it will be a double cd, 29 euro (more or less) and a lot of "album/edit version" on it.
