It doesn't say "studio", only "solo", which could pretty much mean everything, including that the journalist overlooked the existence of the live cut from The Hits, and believes this is something new. I wouldn't read too much into this.

Yes you are right, perhaps I'm reading what I want to see... sad

To be fair I'd be happy with a live Prince version of the song. There are some nice live renditions out there.

By the way, I can't figure out how the tracklist above (considering "Album Version" when there's not specification) would fit on 2 CDs.

hmm yeah, CD1 might be able to fit at a stretch but I suspect there's few more edits in there than already mentioned. At a guess i'd say any single edits on The Hits / The B-sides will be used here as well.

[Edited 10/22/16 0:43am]

I would really like to see all the single edits, especially the ones never available before on cd/digital. (Not that they are better)

Well im suprised that they are releasing yet another greatest hit album

But Man that cover is killer - that picture says bad ass - royalty

Looking at that set list it is disappointing onl because we have those songs and can get them in various forms on any number of current Prince greatest hits albums

Sure there are exceptions like Glam Slam and Got stop Mess about

I want a remastered 1999 and Sign

I like the cover too - it is smug and arrogant and regal all at once - and as you said "Bad ass".

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

I love the cover, and the set list is great - it just adds very little to the other three hits collections. Moonbeam Levels, of course, is an amazing song that deserves to be released, but the rest... Well, I can make my own playlist with those songs, I've had them for 23 years at least...

Since getting the news about the new hits compilation, I've tried to take off my avid Prince fan cap and understand why they thought this might sell. A few thoughts: The primary ideA is that the CD will be aimed at Christmas shoppers.
The only time of year that physical CDs sell well is during the Christmas season. You can wrap a CD as a present, not so much a download except an itunes cards. Adele and T. Swift sold enormous amount of physical CDs of their new releases in recent holiday seasons. To do this, you need something new that can be promoted and get that rare for CDs excellent product placement in the stores. There is no way an old CD gets this, and people other than avid fans rarely buy 3 CD compilations. Moreover, it would still be a good gift for the casual fan who has the Very Best of CD, as it gives them 24 additional songs! While I still wish for a more creative collection, it is possible that they made a decent decision in terms of Christmas album sales.

This board was insanely obsessed with sales back when Prince was alive, to the point that when a new record was released you had more threads about sales and marketing strategies than about the music. Honestly, you'd have thought that this was a board for shareholders of NPG Records or something, not fans! And indeed you'd read some fans moaning about poor marketing moves or poor sales as if their money was in jeopardy!

I do not know what it says about our times, that fans of an artist will be more interested in their sales and charts position than in their music and lyrics, because it certainly wasn't a very important topic of conversation back when I became a Prince fan, or even 10 years ago on the Org, but I find it very sad.

Now that Prince is gone I wish we'd get away from those petty concerns, and get focused again on the reason why we're here: the music. God, why in the world would we care why WB releases a fourth GH package or whether or not it'll sell?! The only thing that should matter to us is the inclusion of Moonbeam Levels, which version of it, and the inclusion of some never released on CD or digitally before 7" edits. Maybe also the whole tracklist, of what it says and what it's worth as a testimony of Prince's work for general audiences. But fucking sales?

I get what you are saying, Databank. Given that the new release was done for commercial reasons rather than artistic, it just was confounding to some of us about their reasoning. I was just trying to clarify this question. I do think it's success or failure could impact what and how much is released in the future. I do care about that as a Prince fan that rarely downloads the boots.

I'm with you. Plus there's no way that a new set wouldn't be created. No way would The Hits and The Very Best Of be what is represented for him, what with the kind of lackluster packaging. Plus these repackaging of hits that somebody already posted about means to me that again, he has hit the big time and mainstream again in that he is equal, or greater than, all of the other longstandng artists in the rock n roll pantheon who get their catalogue reinvested in every decsde or more.

I think there are two main reasons why fans might focus on sales (of this product):

.

1) As has already been said, if it sells poorly, that might give those in charge of releasing his material pause for thought in that they might start seeing the whole process as not worth their while:
.
2) We kind of see sales and 'popularity' as more people becoming aware of our beloved Prince. The more he sells, the more 'justified' we are in our passion for him;, sales give concrete 'evidence' to others, less discerning than ourselves, that he is still (and always has been) an amazing musician; high sales volumes legitimise (in the eyes of the masses) our claim that he is the best artist in the world - ever!
.

I suppose, in short, people on here just want the BEST for 'our man'. He deserves it. smile

1) As has already been said, if it sells poorly, that might give those in charge of releasing his material pause for thought in that they might start seeing the whole process as not worth their while:
While I understand the reasoning, I do not believe it is accurate. A GH compilation is a certain type of product for a certain type of audience. A PR remaster with bonus cuts yet another type of product for yet another type of audience. And a compilation of outtakes, or live DVD yet another... This compilation is not aimed at fans. Most of what can and should be released will, and may touch a broader audience only if the music press generates some hype about it. Besides that was already the reasoning behind former discussions, i.e. Prince won't or won't be able to release albums if they don't sell. Prince isn't an obscure act. His music will always sell more than most of the dozens of records that get released every week. Prince is not a comic book magazine that needs to keep sales above cancelation levels. I do not believe there is any sort of relevance in those discussions. Of course good sales of further products, those aimed at us fans, the more "niche" releases, are likely to have an encouraging impact on further niche releases. But good sales of a GH package won't encourage nothing save more greatest hits packages, and we don't really care about having The Ballads Of Prince next year, then Prince's Dance Hit Remixed By Justin Timberlake the following year, then Prince's Greatest Hits Live the following year, etc. And having endless threads about it? No, it makes zero sense. Just buy the goddamn shit. We're the only fans community in the world who's obsessed by their favorite artist's sales.
This is pathetic. I mean for those younger, new fans who are in high school, OK. Of course when u're 16 your musical tastes are a defining part of the personality u r trying to build and impose on others. And u're starving for credibility. But the great majority of this community is made of people who're above 30, if not older. If they still need Prince to score hits to feel respected by their friends, how sad! How revealing of a lack of personality, self-confidence and affirmation at an age when you should know who you are, have people who love and respect you for exactly that around you, and shouldn't care less about what the others think.

Besides, even more pathetic is the need for commercial success. Having some sort of wish to be known as someone who has delicate tastes for hip, sophisticated music is something I guess any educated person desires even when they're grown. But who, besides the vulgar and uneducated, still listen to Top 20 music after the age of 20 or so? Who would wish Prince to be compared to those things the young are being fed with, those gross dance and shit-hop would be superstars that pollute mainstream medias? If anything, I want Prince's music to be critically acclaimed, not commercially successful!

I suppose, in short, people on here just want the BEST for 'our man'. He deserves it. smile
Yes, I was somewhat happy to see that he sold so much after he passed, because I knew that he'd have smiled at the very notion, and it was like feeling happy for a friend for achieving their goals.

And of course I'm glad to see all those kids coming to the org, becoming Prince fans so many years after Prince was "the" thing.

I was also happy to see all the articles paying their respect.

Not for me, but because yeah, I hope a lot of people can enjoy his music as much as I have and that it can bring them as many things as it brought me. And because I believe in art, and I think Prince was one of the greatest, and that humanity should not forget his work.

But all of this has so little to do with sales, particularly in a world where, for one person who actually purchases a record, 100 will download it illegally or listen to it on a streaming platform.

  1. This had better be remastered, and tastefully so.
  2. I hope they're all 7" edits; then people will say, "hey, where's the rest of [song x]?", and go buy the proper albums (hopefully in upcoming remastered form).
  3. Nice to see 'Batdance' on there... Batman material was never allowed on comps before.
  4. Cover art kind of makes P look like he has a unibrow.
  5. Put me down for a copy.

Hmmm. I want to be supportive of everybody who worked on this, but ... In all my years as a Prince fan, this is the first time that I'm not interested in buying
a new release.

Purple Rain deluxe with a second disc of unreleased songs ... that's awesome. I'm really looking forward to it.

Regarding 4ever, I figured there would be ways to make a disappointing release, but I didn't even consider somebody would make another hits compilation retreading the same years and mostly the same songs as the Hits 1 & 2. The Hits/B-Sides 3 CD collection is one of the best greatest hits packages by any artist, but why release something so similar? Out of 40 tracks, there's maybe 5 that are different.

I hope potential bad sales of 4ever won't impact PR deluxe. 4ever will probable sell 200k. PR deluxe could be around 500k or more copies sold, if it's done well.
