To recap on this, so far we've got:
.
- Still Would Stand All Time
- Another Lonely Christmas
.
I would love to add The Love We Make and Last December, but some of you might be concerned about the 'religious' aspect, although I do think that these are beautiful songs that could really work for this. In 2008, Alexandra Burke won the crowds with her more gospel-ly version of Hallelujah, and it worked! . The other thing we need to remember is that (obviously) our man will not be here to perform and therefore anything that allows for a choir (or that already includes one like Still Would Stand All Time) is a strong advantage, from a promotional point of view.
.
Awaiting further suggestions
For the sake of the name then there's also The Same December from Chaos & Disorder.
Or how about Gold (reached No 10 originally in the UK), it a good anthemic song, lots of happy lyrics, glitters and chiming sounds?

The Love We Make from Montreux 2013 could be an option. There's perfect footage floating round for the video |

Both great choices! , I'll add them to the list.
What's left to find out (or guess) about Gold is how the public would feel about something already commercialised (as opposed to something they haven't heard before).

Well we already know what the public think about already commercialised songs "Purple Rain, 1999, When Doves Cry etc".
So a former single released song may be the best bet.
Gold is the kind of song that if I mention it to non-Prince fans they are not aware of it by the title alone unless I sing them a line. Then they're like "Oh yeah, that one, I like that song" then they continue to sing a few more lines. But it's not one of those overkill songs that continuously gets played anyway. It's something semi-fresh.
Or what about Nothing Compares 2 U, obviously extremely well known (although I'm not sure about the popularity of live versions of songs that people buy)

All good suggestions. Could I possibly venture The Ladder? Kinda spiritual, reflective and looking back as well as forward - kinda fitting for Christmas / New Year. My initial thought was Pop Life but couldn't work out how to sell it! The Ladder for some reason seems to stick for me. . As for our Christmas number ones? Haven't we had Mr Fucking Blobby and Zig and Zag in the past. I guess Cliff is finally done with the Under Eights now. . Of the ones listed I'd go for Gold or still would stand. Comin str8 outta Preston... |

The thing about "Another Lonely Christmas" is that it's a fictional song. It's interesting, but there's no story behind it to keep it personal. The ideology in SWSAT holds up against the grief and pain of his passing. "The Love We Make" has a heroin reference, and perhaps a drug reference, in general, is too much. "The Same December" is an odd choice, and doesn't fit.
For me, I read this thread as a great song to wrap up the end of the year for Prince fans. Something that ticks the boxes (as you said). "Gold" could, but Prince was golden and he glittered like a MFer. I'm still going for SWSAT. It truly sums up this year, not just with Prince, but all the other folks we've lost. It's been a gut punch year for music and movie fans. But we're still here, standing against time for now, and pushing these people's legacy forward. Of course, even when we're gone, their music will still exist...standing against all of time.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

Another Lonely Christmas is almost too perfect. The title alone almost sums up the feelings a lot of Prince fans will have as they head into the first Christmas without him.
But then, Sometimes It Snows in April might also be a good choice. Esepcially if there's a white Christmas this year. Yes, I know Christmas is December and not April but the sentiment still rings true.
Either of those two songs would get my vote. |

I agree and I thought the same about The Love We Make, that needle and spoon might not go down too well during the family festive meals. Still Would Stand All Time still stands as my strong favourite so far. It ticks all the boxes and more. It has the Christmas wintry atmosphere, do I even hear bells in the distance in the intro? That magnificent build up stirs my soul at every listen. Prince sings his heart out to the world and that really needs to get out there. This track is more than worthy of a number 1 place. Oh and that owl at the beginning… a perfect track all round.

I am atheist and love them both. The Love We Make is a favourite for all the family but the kids aren't so keen on the religious references/androcentric nature of Last December. |

I've tested some of the songs mentioned in this thread on my 7-year-old daughter earlier and the results are quite interesting: she said she loved SWSAT and The Love We Make (she was intrigued with the mention of the witch ), she danced like crazy on Gold for 20 minutes non-stop (we repeated it) then she suddenly got bored of it and asked for Mountains.

Personal Choice vs Mass Appeal
I chose this because the MELODY is easy to sing along to

Yes it definetely has the melody and message, I also love that guitar jam in the middle of it... Now I am also thinking, because the song contains those different musical parts and it is also a lengthy track, I wonder how that would work out for airplay?

Instead of editing, I'll just reply here; I had an afterthought. ALC is so dreary. It's a march; a dirge. We've laid him to read, and there have been tributes out of the wazoo. SWSAT is a song of encouragement and exhortation to joy and peace. It celebrates life, as an individual and as a community. ALC is not that. ALC is someone in mourning to the point they're trying to drink the pain away.

Yes, I think this is very important for many people especially around Christmas time when many people are either on their own or not necessarily in a situation or condition that enables them to take part in the festivities with others, and SWSAT can bring that uplifting peace and joy to all in a beautiful way.

My vote would have been for The Cross. Timeless tune and fitting for Christmas. In a similar vain to the cover of Hallelujah that was Christmas number one a while back. Also a bit of a fave to cover since his passing. Didn't Springsteen do it live? There's always a rainbow 🌈 , at the end of every rain ☔️ |

This is about Prince, not Christmas. Not everyone is a Christian. The point is to raise an older Prince song and put it on the charts at the end of the year.

Mass market choice is the way to go and not just personal choice.
In the end though its all down to marketing and getting it out there. In peoples faces on Facebook etc.
I don't believe it needs to have a Christian reference at all, just a good, mass, popular, song that people could sing along to.
That's why I would choose Gold.
I'm literally happy with whatever the outcome is but Gold to me seems perfect.

I am not sure if he did, but coincidently there was a Bruce Springsteen all day special on BBC Radio 2 yesterday and he was in their studios being interviewed etc. I am just saying this in connection with what we are trying to do here, because Radio 2 is also one of the only uk radios - along with BBC Radio 6 Music - that still currently plays Prince's music. The cross is a great song and it could work too, but I personally find the tone not quite fit for this particular purpose. I can really see Bruce Springsteen doing a cover of it though. Social medias are definitely the way to go about this, it's far quicker and it's free. One of the major obstacles will be the choice of the song. I feel very strongly about SWSAT but other people have different tastes and favourites and this also needs to be taken into account. This is why I think a poll system would be good (I will try to get the website admins involved in due time) and it will also give us an indication re. popularity even if only on a smaller sample of people. Another big part of the process will rely on faith of course, and only time will tell. But I truly believe that Prince's music - and his fans - have what it takes to achieve it. Life Matters |
