Mass market choice is the way to go and not just personal choice.

In the end though its all down to marketing and getting it out there. In peoples faces on Facebook etc.

I don't believe it needs to have a Christian reference at all, just a good, mass, popular, song that people could sing along to.

That's why I would choose Gold.

I'm literally happy with whatever the outcome is but Gold to me seems perfect.

Social medias are definitely the way to go about this, it's far quicker and it's free. One of the major obstacles will be the choice of the song. I feel very strongly about SWSAT but other people have different tastes and favourites and this also needs to be taken into account. This is why I think a poll system would be good (I will try to get the website admins involved in due time) and it will also give us an indication re. popularity even if only on a smaller sample of people. Another big part of the process will rely on faith of course, and only time will tell. But I truly believe that Prince's music - and his fans - have what it takes to achieve it.

The next thing to do is to set a deadline for suggestions to come in by, then go through this post and shortlist to maybe 3 songs.

But I think it should be stated that suggestions should be on what we all think the general public would like.

I'm hoping Gold makes the shortlist but I don't see many others orgers agreeing with me, just you hah.

GOLD GOLD GOLD GOLD!!!

Yes, that was my initial fear with this one. Although I think there's still time to see things coming and decide. The main objective is to gather everyone towards one particular song during the strategic weeks, and to spread the word via social network whilst reminding people to refrain from buying it outside those weeks window.

In view of recent news, it would have to be Moonbeam Levels, (leading single of a completely pointless new hits album)

Sorry for overlooking your post nonames, shame it looks like you can't just buy one song off that album... so far anyway. I totally agree with you, plus it doesn't even contain SWSAT... I suppose it could be on our side if that's the song that gets chosen, ie if it is not already on that album, the new fans will have to buy it, if that makes sense...

Regarding Prince 4Ever, we don't know if NPG/Warners plan is to have a lead single of their own and would it be Moonbeam Levels. I should imagine that once the official release date happens on Nov 25 we would know more and the individual tracks will be downloadable.

If they do a lead single, there's still no harm in us doing our own other single too, let's get Prince in the Top 40 twice if that's the case.

HANDS UP: I've never heard Moonbeam Levels confused

Yes to all of that, except the last bit, really never ever lol? You should go and check it out, it is a very possible winner imo, and it also has that slight Bowie-esque edge to it, which again connects with this year... Left to know if it will be purchasable seperately or not, and if that will happen in time... Will wait and see how things will develop from now.

.

On a side note, the question of who will benefit from those sale is important too. For Still Would Stand All Time, it looks like the Steeles Singers could be entitled to a portion, which is great as it is a non-profit company (see reply #3 on this thread).

I've just listened to SWSAT on my phone and yes I do now totally agree that is a great song to go for.

.

My upbeat option would be Gold.

.

Whichever song wins out of the large selection, a backstory to it should be promoted too if possible. If SWSAT wins then obviously the charity aspect would need to be promoted heavily (as that seems to be a factor in UK's Xmas No 1s nowadays).

.

A couple of questions -

1. How do you know The Steeles now use their earnings for their charity?

2. Not a question but a suggestion... I notice that their charity seems to give to Canadian charities, my thought is that a request is made to them before promotion happens so that their royalties for this campaign goes to a UK/International charity as that would entice UK buyers to buy the single moreso.

.

I doubt they give all their earning to their foundation - it's just that they apparently do have a non-profit company called Solid Steele Inc.

Ok, GOLD would be awesome as a Christmas No1. BUT it isn't available to purchase on iTunes, Amazon, anywhere digitally (maybe Tidal) so I can't see how that would work unless PP or WB released it which I don't see happening this year.

Now, I just listened to the 1 minute preview of Still Would Stand All Time on iTunes. I think that's the best choice.
It sounds christmassy which is a good start.
Also, as a pretty big Prince fan, I've never heard it before. (Never got round to listening to Graffiti Bridge, it's the 1 album that has escaped me). Which means, the general public would never have heard it before either. Which makes it sound like a new song!! A new song worth spending 99p on.

Just my opinion. Hope it happens.....
The Sampler Set is great!

Well I'll be damned!! You're right, Gold isn't available on iTunes!!!
I listened to SWSAT this evening and yes has Christmas sounds in it. That's now my main choice.

Even though Gaffiti Bridge album was No 1 in the U.K. It was one of the albums that spent a only a few weeks in the whole chart, so not surprising it's not well known.

Yes, I keep listening to it and I love it more everytime. One good thing if this happened, is that it would draw people towards some of his other fantastic songs on that album such as The Question of U and Joy In Repetition which would enlighten the non-fans about another aspect of his music aside his main hits. I will try and contact the Steele Singers to find out what the charity side of things would entail. Although to be honest I'm not too concerned about it, my main goal being to get Prince back into the charts and get as many people as possible to listen to this beautiful song. I think it would be a wonderful way to end this year either way.

I just think that if charity is a factor then that is a useful tool in promoting the single as we know that Xmas No 1s nowadays tends to have a charity behind them, even the X Factor ones.

As soon as the choice of song has been finalised, I will contact the relevant parties involved to see what can be done and and will keep everyone posted. In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions for a particular UK based or international non-profit organisation or cause that they would like to support, please post it here. Let's remember that there is always an option to set up a parallel Justgiving page alongside this campaign and to simply encourage people to donate to a particular charity.

What activities does the Steele group's charitable work support? I'm thinking that they'd be wanting any monies made from this song to go towards a similar endeavour in the UK, no?

Based on what is available to purchase on iTunes UK and your suggestions, this is what we've got so far, SWSAT being a strong favourite.

  • Still Would Stand All Time
  • The Cross
  • Sometimes It Snows In April
  • Another Lonely Christmas
  • The Ladder

Sorry, hun - I was just thinking if we knew what they support, we can do some research and make suggestions (to them, I'm guessing - not sure how this thing works, lol - what do you have in mind?)!

.

I will say that I'm perplexed about 'Gold' not being available to download, even though I stand by SWSAT as first choice (with Gold second; The Cross third).

So far, the only information I have is the one that appears on their website (see below).
I will try to contact them this week to see how they would feel about all this, and hopefully I will get the answers to those questions at the same time. I am thinking that there are many international NGO charities, such as Amnesty, Oxfam, etc. that have branches in the UK and that they might already be supporting.

Solid Steele Inc.

The Steeles – NON-Profit Company

It's mission: "To educate and inspire young people through Gospel, Jazz, Blues, Pop, R&B, and the Classics-with the intent to encourage students to pursue a higher education or profession in the arts and entertainment industry." *This corporation is organized exclusively for charitable, religious, educational, and scientific, purposes-including for such purposes, the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section 501(c)(3) for the IRS code, or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code.

OK - so, we have:

I haven't posted up details of the Brits Trust, even though I know Paul McCartney wrote to Prince and got him involved at one point - mainly because I tend to think it's a bit 'exclusive', in that only students who attend one of their colleges stand to benefit.

This decision might actually be made for us. I can't see WBR releasing P4E with nothing to support it. They must have a single in mind for Christmas... that's not to say fans would have to buy it, but it makes sense to support it. Perhaps someone should ask Dr Funkenberry if he knows the plan? He'd also be the go-to guy in terms of getting a hashtag out there. #Prince4Christmas for example.

There are any number of Prince songs that would fit in one way or another. ALC is the most obvious Christmas reference tug at the heart stings gem of a song nobody has ever heard... but, it's also a bit, slit your wrists depressing. Having said that, I quite like the idea of Prince reducing the nation to tears... Perhaps something more uplifting would be an easier sell.

"Wow" is upbeat and has a disney-like sing along factor. Though there isn't much of substance in the lyrics above Prince's delivery of them". "7" is another uptempo song of hope, it did ok first time around, and it's on the P4E set?

OK - so, we have:

I haven't posted up details of the Brits Trust, even though I know Paul McCartney wrote to Prince and got him involved at one point - mainly because I tend to think it's a bit 'exclusive', in that only students who attend one of their colleges stand to benefit.

All these look great Dibblekins, thanks for doing that! We should keep them in mind especially if SWSAT gets voted for and the Steeles are willing to direct some of the profits to one of them...

And if we do this with another song, we could always give a mention and encourage people to support these charities in the campaign. I'm sure it's the kind of thing that Prince would approve.

Based on what is available to purchase on iTunes UK and your suggestions, this is what we've got so far, SWSAT being a strong favourite.

  • Still Would Stand All Time
  • The Cross
  • Sometimes It Snows In April
  • Another Lonely Christmas
  • The Ladder

You still have until next Sunday (31st) to add more songs to the proposed list, and you are also welcome to share your views and suggestions. smile

Thank you for your suggestions Noodle24. I think regardless of what WBR have in mind we should still be prepared in case nothing happens from their end. If they do release a single for Christmas, I suspect it would probably be Moonbeam Levels as it is new to most and it also sounds like a very likely hit. In any case, should still do this though as there is no harm in having Prince twice in the charts. I too like 7 and Wow, and will add them on the list, though I am not entirely sure that the lyrics are of much relevance as an end of year number 1.
