i agree. it's a few mods that really make this site more disorganized than ever.

like if i want to post the latest news that was jsut release how londell and bremer trust stated they will be trying peer to peer distrubution of new releases of prince music... instead of making a fresh thread to discuss it, the mods will just lock it and let it drown in this sticky...

As far as this musical idea goes..........Nononononono no musical, please don't, this is every admirer of his works worst nightmare (and an insult too).

If Prince couldn't be talked into doing a will, he sure couldn't have been talked into doing a trust, which is usually a lot more complicated.

Not so. It's easy to talk someone into a trust when you explain to them how much it will save them in estate taxes. Prince was ridiculous, but do you think he would choose a 100 million dollar tax bill or a ZERO dollar tax bill? Even Prince is realistic enough to see which one is superior.

I respectfully disagree:
You are mixing apples with oranges: the resulting tax bill is a separate issue from the complexity of a trust. And as I said: If Prince couldn't be talked into doing a will because it is a type of "contract", due to the complexity of a trust it would have caused him to shy away because trusts are even more "contract-like".

So they're going to seal the heirship affidavits and the special administrators responses. Does that mean that we will not find out who is deemed an heir and who is not?

We will eventually find out about any heirs because there will be a transfer of ownership/tax records. Also, I am sure there will be a leak, as if the jailbird is determined to be his offspring, there will be an uproar. Although I don't agree with the seal, I am thinking the judge is believing there is a real possibility of several heirs being confirmed and to avoid embarrassment to his legacy - has determined to close it down.No doubt the seal will be challenged.

There are 15 affidavits being sealed temporarily. Of those, how many are of supposed half siblings and how many of possible offspring? Tyka is named as I am sure his other half siblings...and grand nieces, etc. Don't see this order being permanently sealed.

The hearing is next Monday. KSTP, a local Minneapolis TV station, filed a request to cover the hearing live. In response, the special administrator filed a motion, citing Minnesota paternity law, asking that the hearing be closed as confidential issues relating to paternity will be discussed.

It will be up to the court to grant that motion, or to determine when or whether that information will be released.

The hearing on 27 June will be open (first come, first seated).

But the various reports today that Jailbird's DNA has come back, are very odd. IF he was truly a match to Prince, why would his mother be trying to sell the story? There would be many more millions to be made. It sounds like a last gasp to me.

I hope you're correct. In a way, I hope there is no child because if there is, it would mean that if Prince did know about their exsistence, he didn't involve that kid is in life at all and that would seem out of character - at least the perceived character portrayed. I still don't believe he's gone - he was only 57.

I don't think this person is Prince's child. But if he were... on the one hand, I can understand your perspective on lack of involvement. On the other hand, I can see where lack of involvement could seem very much in character per Prince's priorities:

- Complete freedom for himself

- Nobody else should make money from his work

- Only look forward, never look back

Maybe I'm reading too much into this quote, but something sounds off about this. It's talking about Duane's granddaughter, the minor child involved in the probate case.

'He said some of the information likely to be discussed in court about the girl’s mother and her purported relationship to Prince are of a “personal nature.”'

Exactly. If you would had the opportunity to talk to Prince just one more time, would you have insisted that he write his Will??

If you really hate contracts, you don't get married, let alone twice, because a legal marriage is a contract and a very powerful, far ranging one that affects all kinds of rights and legal obligations.

Marriage as an institution is like a systemwide LegalZoom boilerplate contract.

That's a good point. If her son stands to gain millions of dollars, why is she trying to sell a story for a fraction of that? And why wouldn' the publications want confirmation of the results first? Well, this throws a wrench in the gears....what is everybody thinking? Duane's granddaughter is claiming heirship but will not take a blood test? An 11 year old girl is claiming heirship and somehow her aunt had a "personal" relationship with Prince? Is the 11 year old the same girl as Duane's granddaughter? So Prince may have slept with his niece and produced a daughter??? Please clarify for me, because that sounds way too fucked up.

I don't, really. Anecdotally, I've had bartenders serve me wine when I was 16, without checking my ID (and the law when I was 16 was that you had to be 21 to drink), and I sure as hell looked much younger than my peers, being about 5'1", 110 lb & dressed in clothes picked out by my mother. It's absolutely attitude and if you think Prince couldn't give off the air of someone much older?

On one hand, Kansas had super strict drinking laws. OTOH, Kansas didn't require peo...until 1985.

In the 1970s, you could be 18 and legally drink in Kansas. It could literally come down to the liquor content of the wine.

I'd go for conman. But also, I don't think that woman is swimming in money or even solvent, so she'd sell her story for a fraction of that if she had cash flow problems, even it were completely true.

I also wondered why she wouldn't have named a father but I think welfare reform only required to you to name a father after 1996.

They are refusing the blood test because they have provided birth certificates (Duane's and the girl's) stating who the father is. They are claiming that according to Minnesota law that is enough to establish paternity.

The way the article reads, my first thought was this could be Prince's daughter. But after more consideration, there are any number of scenarios that are possible. For instance, Tyka left Duane off of the list of possible heirs because there is a dispute over whether or not Duane is a blood brother. Duane's birth certificate lists John Nelson as his father, but some in the family are saying that John adopted Duane. So there is a legal question on whether or not an adopted sibling can inherit from Prince. What if there are some issues with whatever relationships the mother was in at the time the girl was conceived? It would make sense that they would not want to air the family's dirty laundry before the whole world, literally.

That is true. It just strikes me as a little odd the way the article was worded, stating the girl's mother's purported relationship to Prince are of a "personal nature". It sort of implies that there was something going on between Prince and the girl's mother.

No. The 11 year old is Duane's granddaughter through Duane's deceased son. Duane also has a daughter, who is still living. The granddaughter and daugther would split Duane's share of the inheritance. However, according the the Star Tribune article, the girl’s mother and her purported relationship to Prince are of a “personal nature.” The girl's mother is not blood related to Prince.
