I agree with others, I don't think Madonna is a good choice at all to do a tribute to Prince. (have to be honest, I'm not a particular fan of Madonna). But others are right Prince was a musician first and foremost and he should be honoured by real musicians.
It would be great to see them put together a band of greats -like they did when they had Prince participate in the jam session for George Harrison's "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" and they could do a medley of some of his hits.
I would love to see someone like Lenny Kravitz doing a rendition of "Let's go Crazy". And for goodness sake get artists who can actually sing and play well - don't want another repeat of Lady Gaga's tribute to Bowie. I get that she was inspired by him, but she just didn't have the right voice to pull off his songs (even Bowie's son didn't like it)! I'm tired of Madonna and I think there are so many other dynamic musicians that could do a better job of honoring him!! [Edited 5/17/16 10:36am]

Now Imma let ya finish, but I do want to say, Prince and Madonna were not friends. In an interview from the past few years he was asked what he thought about Madonnas newer music. He replies that he hasn't seen or talked to her in years, so he can't even comment on her music. He'd have to hang out with her again to be able to even start to have an informed opinion of the music. Also I have seen a clip where he is at some insider event, and they are watching (being forced to watch?) a Madonna video. He turns around in the middle of the video and whispers to someone behind him "How much longer?" LOL! It was such a hilarious clip. Anyway. I'm sure whatever she does or says, it will be tasteful.
Tributes are for the living. Those who have passed on don't need them.

I'm sure that's all true. I'm just saying, there's lots of years in between Sign O The Times and 2015 that they did not cross paths. I think Lenny Kravitz would be a good person to do a Tribute. Someone of the same gender and same frequency.

They worked together. He reached out to her with the infamous open letter. I'm sure she has anecdotes I don't think there is a better choice. If there is a musical tribute she has the power and iinfluence to make it a great one.

That tacky Wendy Williams discussed this on her show. https://youtu.be/Ej9hqglHTLY She's right - for once.

I can't think of anyone better to do it.... She's the only pop star left from princes exact era accomplished enough to do it... I think she will do a great performance. "Still Crazy 4 Coco Rock"

That open letter was bizarre and self-indulgent! Didn't strike me as terribly intimate or personal. If he were so close with her, you think he'd just have called her! I think that letter was for us, the press, the big wigs at Warner, basically everyone BUT Madonna! Lol

And a few months later he's dead and she is doing a Tribute to him. twinkieG made some valid points above. And "Funkyness" is probably right with this quote: "I am not watching the Madonna tribute Prince would never allow this. SHe is an old wh_re who is pimping the memory of Prince for her own glory." Besides that she probably used her Illumanti connections to do this tribute. Why her arse! Like other people have said they could have used L Debarge, Lenny Kravitz, D'Angelo, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, The Time, The Family, The Revolution, 3rd eye girl, NPG!!!

"I hope she doesn't dress like a clown" - L O L Z !!!!!!!
Could it be, also, that we are making much ado about nothing, and she's just going to give a speech while a highlights reel plays? This, I could live with. And having said all that, I don't own a TV so why am I even throwing my hat into the ring at all?

Lol, they must be getting flack for choosing her. I plan to record the show but won't watch it real time. I do hope she stays on point and does Prince proud. She's been displaying some really sketchy behavior for some time now, but I hope she understands this isn't the time to make it all about her. Welcome to "the org", Mumio…they can have you, but I'll have your love in the end

Like I said before it is not a question of is she good or bad or how Billboard will do it, first of all they and the producers have an awful track record already with this show, bad sound bad pairings bad ideas, and this idea was beyond rushed. It's a ratings thing and a "oh we have to do something" which is the worst kind of tribute, example last Grammies with GAGA doing a dress up mockery. It takes two minutes to call jimmy jam and terry lewis and all of the Minnie connection would be there. So AGAIN let me say I don't know if it will be good or bad, personally for me I am not watching because I don't think Madonna is a good performing choice, and his death is fresh in my head, maybe it was the 80 times I saw in concert and now just the idea of watching Madonna and Billboard try to cut and paste something is something I personally don't want to see. Billboard are saying fuck you to fans who protest. Wendy Williams defended Madonna and I think it was to get in the press. Also they confirm she will be performing. Anyway, I dont care anymore. I'm laughing with Prince as he watches down on all the shananighans. And I would like to think he will be in the audience watching like he did when Alicia Keys paid tribute. If you've seen that clip you know what I mean. ------

People really need to have some respect. I appreciate ANY tribute to Prince. It's a sign of respect and honor. Like her or not, Madonna is an international icon over the last 3 decades. Sound familiar? And they have a history. I hope she kills it. And if she doesnt? Then I respect her for giving the effort. "Paisley Park is in your Heart"

. . A photo of her Prince Tribute rehearsal has been leaked! . . . j/k of course but the 3rd thing would be: no tricyle please!!! WTF was she thinking? That is so embarrassing... can you imagine Prince, Stevie, Chaka doing dumb shit like that? Never in a million years! They take their craft seriously! . ... still, they should have just asked Stevie, Chaka, 3rdEye Girl, Wendy & Lisa, The Time, The Revolution, Lianne la Havas, Esperanza Spalding, Steve Vai, Gary Clarke Jr. and the likes for one long jam session showcasing Prince's many different styles and genres throughout the years. . Forever changed
