serious, i should finaly leave the prince world after 25 years and spend the time with importand people like my wife and daughter or simply read a new book! i was waitin for over ten years now for a new prince high and since today i am sure that will never happen again... he wasnt even able to do a "professional" concert in germany in the last 5 years and his last recordings are just boring as hell and sounds like demos. "stare" is a single ??? OMG I listem to it 10 times now and still no Feeling at all !! i should try "children of the sun" again, or "kamasutra" or "yellow and gold" or "rnrlovea" (jamie lewis house remix) or "fall in love tonight" .... you lost it completly prince!! miles thought you are the future .....hhuhuhuhhahahaha

As a piece of music it definitely belongs in the "funk" genre. All of its elements are typical for funk music and it's not even a "hybrid" track of several genres, as Prince's stuff often is. Not liking something, or not "liking it enough", does not mean a piece of music would not belong in a certain genre of music. I see similar arguments being brought up all the time in "smaller" genres like jazz, metal etc. and it's just silly to me. There are better ways to express your disappointment in things than to insist that they're not what most people perceive them to be.

I'll comment on something else here too, because the phrase "on the one" is often understood in a way that does not further anyone's understanding or appreciation of funk music. It's not necessarily something that you guys are arguing for in your posts, but it's implied there, nevertheless.

As you probably know, funk "hitting on the one" refers to an emphasis of the first beat of a bar (or a segment of several bars). It's an effective way to do funk stuff, but it's really just one way to do it. There are funk tracks that have an emphasis on the one and there are funk tracks that do not. It's certainly no prerequisite for something to qualify as "funk", if that's what people usually mean when they bring up that phrase and try to justify their views on funk with it. Not even Parliament / Funkadelic had it defining their music until the mid-70s.

If funk music was as limited as some people on the Internet seem to want it to be I probably wouldn't be a fan of it.

What I meant is...FUNK hits the spot upon the first listen! There is not one single FUNK song that I love - Prince's included - that did not grab a hold of my very soul upon the very first listen! I just KNOW it when I hear it and I just KNOW it when I don't.

Now I normally like most of the new material, but this is weak. Nice groove, but thats it. Makes What If sound like a masterpiece.

Try a few more listens and the groove of the song gets to you. I now wish it went on for longer.It reminds me of the song Come a bit.

I hope Prince realizes one day that Spotify is 20% own by record companies... and also understands 0's and 1's as in digital music rots your brain... he said that around the time of 20TEN... he's a hypocrite... Doesn't matter I tried my best to get into Rockhardlover and it turned out to be a depressing song as in opening a can of beans with my ears... if Prince was as remotely as good at marketing as Apple, his new music would still be releavent. I "thank" Prince by buying his music (when he lets me) and get quite annoyed when he forces me to jump through hoops to even listen to somethign new, not knowing if I'll ever be able to buy it. I just want to put the music in a playlist so I can listen to it in the car.

And I wish people like KCOolMusiq would stop calling him the symbol. His changing his name to that symbol and saying "Prince is dead" was his absolute worst marketing mistake ever. It told the whole world what his die hard fans already knew, that he can be a be a bit wacko and he lost the whole "His Royal Badness" mystique in the process. The sooner the whole world forgets he once changed his name to an unpronouncable symbol, the better.

My thank U 4 the MEGA, blockbuster, funk jam "Stare" was mainly aimed 4 posting it on Spotify, after removing ALL of his classic catalog "Masterpieces" from it. He has never posted his freshly new muziq 4 free on a current streaming site.

Also would like to add a thank U 4 refering to the song "Sexy Dancer" . The funk heavy breathing jam that first made me a follower. Eye already gave my admiration several times, in multiple threads anyway 4.

Quick sidenote... HardRockLover is an awful repeat of the same bad idea behind Rock N Roll Is Alive: Prince jealous that radio loves another man with lesser talent than him (Snoop and Lenny). "Why is he on the radio, and not me?", he wonders. So he tries to shit all over the more successful record by dissing it, but falls squarely on his face, by not putting a twist or two on his initial diss idea, which would make his record more interesting. It's a one-trick pony attacking a song with 3 or 4 tricks up it's sleeve. In this case it's Snoop Dogg, a rapper, singing! That's the twist, but Prince doesn't get it, so moving on, but starting with the LoveSexy album, and especially on the Batman album, you can really hear Prince's one-trick pony, achilles heel at work and it bit him here again with "HARDROCKLOVER"

"Stare", is just like an actual stare. You know what? Anybody remember Caviar, from VH1's "For The Love Of Ray J"? Fellas, you ever see her do porn? OMG, what a mess. "Stare" is just like that chick there. It's just la-aaaa--zzz---yyy! It's got all the pretty pieces, but does nothing exciting with them! Vocals? um, they are ok, I guess. Bass? yes, it does in fact have a bass. Lyrics? yep it has lyrics too. Can you relate to it? no. Do you even know what's about? no. Ok, but you diggin that hook right? what hook? It's just a waste of the listener's time.

hhuhuhuhhahahaha indeed, but don't forget that 'Child Of The Sun' has Ain't No Place Like U and Kama Sutra has one or two inspired moments including The Plan

I'm not opposed to sampling and it can be quite cool.
But the Kiss sample in this song is jarring and really poorly done. It takes you out of the song.

The sexy dancer one is a bit better.
