I have seen the LOvesxy show up and close in 1988 and loved it, but when I recently watched it on video I thought -although technically very good- it was all a bit forced, over the top and Prince looked somewhat desperate, very skinny and not so happy. Gimme the Parade shows or any of the early (before PR) tours over the Lovesexy shows, much rawer and edgier and more honest. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

This is the dumbest thread since the Does Prince use chemical hair relaxers thread.

That's how I feel although it's good to know that it was at least great in person; would never want to knock anyone's personal memories of a show!

I prefer Insatiable to Scandalous. Scandalous makes me feel sick after a bit. I don't think it's inherently a bad song though, I just think Insatiable is better.

Some of my random less popular opinions - For You and the other unreleased stuff we hear from 1976-78 is highly underrated in Prince fan circles, it all shows incredible talent in one so young. Jill Jones and Margie Cox are probably the best female singers P worked with in the 80s, along with Mavis Staples.
The Dream Factory bootleg album is a superior work of art to SOTT.
Crystal Ball is probably Prince's greatest single sonic achievement.
Wendy & Lisa's Are You My Baby is almost as good as the similar sounding If I Was Ur Girlfriend. The Time's Pandemonium is their best album with Prince involvement. Xpectation, C-NOTE and NEWS are all better than most of the Madhouse stuff (which is still cool, only less than these).
F.U.N.K, 3121, Turn Me Loose, The Word, Redhead Stepchild, Future Soul Song and Cause & Effect all rule and are among his best, if underrated works of the last 10 years.
In fact, much of his work over the past 10-12 years I found a bit disappointing at first (well, except for 3121, Lotusflowe3r and AOA, which I loved from the outset), but it actually rewards and improves seriously on repeated listening.

You're just not a Prince fan. Simple as that - no shame in it.

Granted, but if you're struggling to find a good twenty minutes in the whole of it you're just not listening.

Don't be the Prince Fandom Police. I struggle to find a single song I don't hate on MPLSound, but that doesn't have shit to do with how much I love most Prince albums. I love Hitchcock but I hate I Confess; I am not a fan? "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Planet Earth? I like about half of it pretty well, and I'm kind of indifferent about the rest....I stand by the statement about Emancipation. If you consider yourself a Prince fan yet think Emancipation is a piece of garbage, then you're a Prince fan for reasons that have little or nothing to do with music. Like I said, there's no shame in it.

Like I said, there's no shame in it. That's bullshit. Emancipation is one of my least favorite albums. And I'm clearly a huge Prince fan. Nobody with even half a brain would say otherwise. It's all personal preference. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

The single biggest mistake Prince made in his music from 1984-1990, both live and on record, was turning down the bass guitar. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
And none of Prince's albums---I mean not ONE--has aged all that well. However, each lp has at least one song that has withstood the test of time. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

The man said there weren't 20 good minutes on it. THAT'S bullshit. if that's your 'preference' it has more to do with the cover art or the name change or the haircut than the music. Somebody has to say it.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That's not bullshit. It's just his opinion of the music. I'm sure there are other Prince albums where he loves every second of every song. Again, it's all preference. Calling people out on being true Prince fans or not is one of the most tiring things on this site. Expressing shock that someone doesn't like more of Emancipation is one thing; saying they're not a fan because they like only a couple of songs is something else. And that something else smells like bullshit. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I agree with you.
Just because someone doesn't share the same opinion on an album you have no right to disect their personal musical taste and call them not a fan... I can call u not a real Prince fan for liking his must boring and dull album Planet Earth, but I won't because at the end of the day that's just your opinion.

Not sure if I agree with this one too, but you may have a point. That Linn drum machine sound is very dated by now. But Parade stood the test of time pretty well if you ask me.

I admit, I spoke a bit out of turn, but would you believe I just came back from an energizing jog to the tune of my 18 favorite songs from Emancipation?! True. So personally I think it's a knockout. But you're right, that's me!

*"Raspberry Beret" is a very corny song.
*The song "Purple Rain" has never been a favorite of mine.I find it to be draggy and overblown. Then again,I don't really like those big, arena rock ballads.
*Tony M. wasn't that bad.
