Yeah, I mean it isn't a song Prince wrote

Baltimore is social commentary, with utopian spiritual 'let's all come 2gether' intentions
Some people want Prince to be angry and aggressive with this, but that isn't who he is
I want to hear the guitar solo, he might put some of it through that

so far the lyrics remind me of the feeling of the Cross, Uptown, Sign o the Times etc

I haven't seen anyone on this thread say they want him to express the lyrics in an angry or aggressive manner. I've read where some have said that they wonder if he would take it to an edge, like he has in many of his political songs, without the sugarcoat, which doesn't mean being aggressive or angry, other than getting straight to the point about the issue, like in 'Dreamer' and 'Colonized mind'. I mean it is bold enough in his 'Baltimore' song he mentioned Mike Brown's name with Freddie Gray's in the song, and some took an issue with that already, but it is what it is, so basically, he already to it to the edge without aggression or anger and steered the rest of the lyrics in the direction of peace and calm, but yeah it has sort of a political tone so far. We shall see what the final lyrics will offer.

I don't have a problem with him being angry and aggressive, I for one am 1 that mentioned him cutting into it, others in the thread earlier on also expressed it.

Again nothing wrong with anger. It is natural. I think of the I Hate U guitar solo.
But yes a few of us wanted some of that.

That's me. I apologise for being difficult.

lol nothing 2 apologize about, I want some in there too.

But just following his Zen approach 20Ten some interviews etc especially 1 in particular where he said he doesn't like writing from an angry place...
And just flowing thru his career, I accept that overall Prince is a Purple hippie and the utopian ideals have always been the foundation to his music.
So I accept if that is where he is coming from

Even the show he had on the 2nd clearly showed that is his aim. His JW beliefs lead, and it's cool

Ugh! I grew up in the church, so Prince, as far as I'm concerned, is preaching to the choir. Because who doesn't know that getting along is best! Who in Baltimore doesn't know that? And just because you want peace doesn't mean you cannot be angry that it isn't there yet. I wanted Prince to sound like he knows that pease is not so simple.

Yeah, so u r probably familiar with 'be angry and sin not'

I think he is also preaching to the sinners lol
For me, even if just in the guitar solo. The music can speak volumes that your words can't express at times.

I think that Prince has covered a much broader range of thoughts, emotions and observations than he is ever given credit for. One must be careful not to project just because a particular line of thought may personally resonate more than others.

Up to this point I see nothing to criticize, especially since the full song has yet to debut. Until then, I join Baltimore in looking forward to the Mother's day show and peace on earth.

Thank you for doing this Prince, cool

...."After a few moments of groovy funk bass playing, he stepped to the microphone and sang to the crowd: "U pictured a rainbow, but Eye held it in my hands. U had flashes, but Eye saw the whole plan…”

What followed was an unexpected and improvised version of the Waterboys hit, “The Whole of The Moon”.

Following a lively call and response period with the crowd, at Prince's behest a young woman walked to the front of the stage and began singing her heart out.

That woman was Detroit-born, Chicago-based Eryn Allen Kane, a singer who was invited to Paisley Park to record vocals on the new song “Baltimore.”

Contrary to reports that it was completed last week, Prince is taking time with the song to make it very special.

Fittingly, the live set ended with Prince inviting the audience into a communal chant of “Baltimore… Peace 4 ever more.”

Supposedly, someone named Iris Perez and Prince.

http://www.myfoxtwincitie...Jc.twitter

"While still seated at the keyboard, Prince then played a tear-evoking electric guitar solo for the remainder of the song. Moved, I quickly wiped an eye as he walked over."

"In a healthy display of emotion, he looked at the studio floor for a second. Fighting tears of his own, Prince politely excused himself to serve water for the both of us."

*I do see now that Prince's emotional display was about Joni Mitchell's condition. I just knew I remembered reading he was fighting tears in that article about the song.* shrug

In the meantime though, while we wait with bated breath to hear this "COMPLETE Masterpiece" ...check this out:

http://www.essence.com/20...ocumentary

Nina Simone's 1978 cover of Randy Newman's "Baltimore" is still celebrated as one of the most beautiful pieces of social commentary. Fast forward 37 years and the song, and conditions in Baltimore, still apply.

ESSENCE Festival alum Jazmine Sullivan covers the sublime protest song for the Netflix documentary What Happened, Miss Simone (out June 26). Sullivan’s cover will be featured in a tribute album accompanying the documentary. Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, Simone's daughter Lisa, and Common will also be featured. Listen in!

Thanks, never heard it but will listen to it.

Just watched it. I love when she said "I can't be an artist and not reflect the times."

Just to add, They'll probably do some covers of Peace songs too. I can see Prince and the band singing a cover of John Lennon's 'Give Peace a Chance' or the 'Beatle's 'Come Together' or one of Bob Marley's political songs.

Though he says he doesn’t vote and refused to sing on “We Are the World,” Prince will stage a “Rally 4 Peace” in Baltimore on Sunday to honor Freddie Gray.

“In a spirit of healing, the event is meant to be a catalyst for pause and reflection following the outpouring of violence that has gripped Baltimore and areas throughout the US,” according to a statement released by LiveNation. “As a symbolic message of our shared humanity and love for one another, attendees are invited to wear something gray in tribute to all those recently lost in the violence.”

Prince will also debut a new single: “Baltimore.”

“The song was written following the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray and is a tribute to all of the people of Baltimore,” the news release read. “Although the song hasn’t yet debuted, the lyrics were recently made public and as a message of reconciliation, Prince states ‘Peace is more than the absence of war.’ ”

This is not the first time Prince has spoken out about police and African Americans. “Like books and black lives, albums still matter,” he said at the Grammys this year.

Prince the political activist is a new development in a career that’s spanned decades. Unlike peers such as Bruce Springsteen — whom Prince admires — he isn’t typically found stumping for candidates or causes. Even “We Are the World,” the 1985 hit single written to benefit Africa, went without his talents because he did not want to record with other artists. (He did donate an unreleased track to the “We Are the World” record, but hey — they say he hasa vault that holds thousands of such songs.)

As with all things Prince, the 56-year-old artist’s political affiliations are not quite clear. Though it’s been reported he is a Republican and he made headlines by donating to a Republican candidate in his native state of Minnesota in 1990, a public records search under Prince’s given name, Prince Rogers Nelson, indicated he has not registered to vote. (Yes, Prince is in Nexis.) In fact, he told Tavis Smiley in 2009 that he doesn’t much care for politics.

i hope all will be positive and safe for all involved especially prince.

(hopefully this story was okay to post. it is about his upcoming performance that surrounds a situation. nothing more, nothing less. ) confused

Prince Is Dropping a Song, Guitar Solo for Baltimore

cool

From Reagan and the Cold War to “Baltimore,” Prince is no stranger to releasing tribute songs in big political moments.

Prince is getting political, again. This time, he’s releasing a tribute to Baltimore, in response to the death of Freddie Gray.

The as-yet unreleased track, simply titled “Baltimore,” will address “the unrest in Baltimore and the socio/political issues around the country in the wake of a slew of killings of young black men,” according to Prince’s publicist. On Sunday, Prince is set to play a “Rally 4 Peace” concert at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore. He is expected to unveil the new song at his upcoming Charm City gig, and other stars are expected to join in.

“As a symbolic message of our shared humanity and love for one another, attendees are invited to wear something gray in tribute to all those recently lost in the violence,” a statement read.

>>>>>>>

Here are the lyrics:

Nobody got in nobody’s way
So I guess you could say
It was a good day
At least a little better than the day in Baltimore
Does anybody hear us pray?
For Michael Brown or Freddie Gray
Peace is more than the absence of war
Absence of war

Are we gonna see another bloody day?
We’re tired of cryin’ and people dyin’
Let’s take all the guns away
Absence of war—you and me
Maybe we can finally say
Enough is enough, it’s time for love
It’s time to hear
It’s time to hear
The guitar play!

dove

“‘Baltimore’ may likely be among Prince’s most powerful socio-political songs,” FOX 9 reporter Iris Perez (one of the first people to hear the song), told The Daily Beast. “It’s very moving.”

Perez described the new song as a soul/rock number, with a pre-chorus “slightly reminiscent” of Prince’s “The Holy River.”

“‘Baltimore’ may likely be among Prince’s most powerful socio-political songs. It’s very moving.”

This is just the latest example of Prince injectingpolitical or social commentary into his music. “The people I know, they been strugglin’, at least it seems that way,” he sings on “Ol’ Skool Company” from 2010. “Fat cats on Wall Street, they got a bailout. Why somebody else got to wait. 700 billion, but my old neighborhood, ain’t nothin’ changed but the date.” And on his 1981 song “Ronnie, Talk to Russia,” he implores President Reagan to “talk to Russia before it’s too late” and engage in meaningful Cold War diplomacy. (Reagan ended up doing so a few years later.)

As for “Baltimore,” a release date has yet to be announced. “We’re going to talk to Jay-Z and his people about streaming it on Tidal,” the musician said.

IMO

the man is and always be one of the greats. he performs with courage, coolness, class, creativeness and cosmic energy.

And you know what: Prince's people have reached out to me on Facebook (through a Fembot called Bibi), asking if they could incorporate my lyrics into the song!

That is one of the reasons for the release hold-up. They also asked me to write a rap for the live show, 'cause P will be joined on stage by Jay-Z's cousin Wombat. The man just keeps finetuning his MaStErPiEcE!

Oh god....another horrendous "Can't we all just get along?" message. Awful.

Come and dig the Koo Koo war
Rumor has, it got started cuz our leaders got bored
New toys with a laser teach children 2 kill
Who knows when they're older, maybe they will
Nothing gained, paradise lost
Koo Koo's the trip and death is the cost
It's your world... 4 a little while
Peace, mother, brother, peace of mind
We got 2 love one another all the time
Cuz a kiss on the lips is better than a knife in the back
Can U get 2 that or is your blue train runnin' on a Koo Koo track?
U're 2 laxed, 2 lazy 2 dig all the facts
What it is y'all? We need a new plan, new plan of attack
Everybody jam, we've got the knack
Let's party y'all, let's party y'all
Cuz a kiss on the lips is better than a knife in the back
Now everybody say it

Forget this Baltimore garbage and its silly lyrics. Just listen to D'Angelo's The Charade. Your time is better spent.

Or listen to the best of Curtis Mayfield. Far better a songwriter than Prince and D'angelo on urban crises and Black America. "We People Who Are Darker Than Blue", "If There's A Hell Below We're All Going To Go", "We Gotta Have Peace".
