Let's not be too hasty in judgment because we haven't heard the song yet. If this guitar solo is anywhere near the caliber of the guitar solo that he played during 'My Guitar Gently Weeps' at the RRHOF induction of George Harrison - the lack of substance in the lyrics could easily be ignored. shrug

But of course, that would remove the whole point of the supposed purpose of the song, wouldn't it? hmmm

.

That's where I'm at as well, maybe the song is much better when we can actually hear it instead of reading the lyrics. Sadly I do have to say that my initial excitement is somewhat gone... neutral

.

Reading about Prince being moved and inspired about what's going on in Baltimore, writing and recording a song...I thought this can be really great. He gotta have plenty of things to say on the topic...a tribute to the people of Baltimore, also addressing political and social issues throughout the country.

.

Well maybe the guitar solo is really great, the lyrics gave me a "roses are red, violets are blue" rhyme feeling...sorry. I'm still waiting and looking forward to the actual song though biggrin

Is the song out yet? Can't find it. I'm gonna listen and stay away from this thread so I can appreciate it without being spoiled by all the negative people that call themselves Prince fans in this place. Make my own judgement, I'm glad he's writing a song about this and I'm sure its going to be about the idea of Black Lives being made so cheap in the U.S. (especially male). Can't believe some prick in here suggested already, not having heard the song, that its a cynical attention or money grap....like Prince needs money or attention at this age.

It will be the passion and delivery of the lyrics that will be key, rather than the lyrics themselves. This is true of many of Prince's songs and also moments live when he transcends himself.

Whatever, the song and its guitar solo reduced the journalist to tears, so by all accounts it may well be very emotive.

Sure, but the same can be said of Purple Rain. I don't expect a "Say it Loud I'm Black and I'm Proud" or a "The Times They Are a-Changing" from Prince, but if you're going to write about social or political issues, I do expect him to have something original to say. The lyrics I read here seem like a hastily written bunch of cliches.

I agree with most of what you said! Yesterday I said it shouldn't take longer than 24h before it gets released, he recorded the song Wednesday...what's the wait?!

.

“We're going to talk to Jay-Z and his people about streaming it on ‘Tidal' he shared with a nod."

Well that was Wednesday...this coming from an artist who claims he wants to record and share immediately. We're here...where are you and your song?

.

The song should be released before the party this evening, make it available for radio stations right NOW!

Share a WeTransfer link through http://twitter.com/PURPLESSENCE as you surely won't be charging for this "ode to Baltimore" right?

Why does it have to take days and days after recording it, come on now...the situation in Baltimore isn't one you can use to dangle purple carrots twocents

BECAUSE any song especially one recorded LIVE needs to be properly mixed and mastered so it can sound really good, give him a break you all know the quality of sound is really important to him

.

Okay...I guess that is true, it does take "some time" to get it mixed and mastered. Perhaps they could have waited a little longer with the press statement then. To not have too much time between announcement and release, not to say that the song can't be coming later today. And I do wish it sounds really good then! biggrin

If this song doesn't come out today then Prince should be blasted for using the uprising in Baltimore as a attention seeking ploy. Prince should have waited to announce that he wrote a musical tribute to the people of Baltimore if he wasn't ready to release the song right away. This isn't a project that he announces and then shelves. What's the point of releasing a press statement about a song on a topic this serious and people can't hear it?

The Org has to be one of the most negative places on Earth, it's ridiculously funny to read all the pre-pissed and pre-disappointed cranks with their laundry list of petty complaints and advice on what he should really be doing, like yeah I'd-much-much-prefer-a-hit-and-run-show-to-that-song-I'm-so-sure-I won't-like.

When even our dear Hatrina is calling for a little positivity, you know the negativity has reached an unmatched degree of absurdity.

Even if the song turns out not to be that great, it's obvious he's moved by what's happening in Baltimore and Joni Mitchell's condition and you gotta respect genuine grief and emotion at a basic human level. It ain't all about crafting pop tunes and being the perfect pop star.

do me a favor? put in your ipod/itouch whatever 5 of the last officially released Prince songs , then put in 5 songs commercially released by other artists , you'll hear a clear difference in quality.

Yeah, I agree with you 100%. Aerogram, I'm not even sure why some of these people are even in here. Its ridiculous to come to the board expecting conversation about one of our favorite artists and get instead an endless, negative drone, masquerading as "objectivity" or "anti-cultism." I've found many of these posters to have this entitled attitude like these jokers actually know Prince personally and he owes them something because......(a question not one of them can answer directly...usually long winded negative diatribes about how much "he has disappointed them" since like 1991 or something.) Weak. I'm equally a fan of bands/artists like Living Colour and 24-7 Spyz, Bjork, Radiohead....those fan sites never even approach the level of negativity here.

Return the favor and listen to the same songs in lossless on a decent quality sound system, and you too will hear a difference in quality. Actually, you can limit your test to only include "The Breakdown" and then decide if you believe sound quality and proper mixing is important to Prince.

On topic, I hope the song Prince has written in response to events in Baltimore is well done. I thought SST and Brand New Orleans were good tracks. He's done well and also struggled with tribute-type songs in the past. But I do agree that teasing a social issue song and sitting on it for days does not come off as good form.

Even if Prince did make moves to become relevant is that a bad thing? The lyrics are simple and to the point I don't agree with him with the message that people should give up the guns. As we see law enforcement become more militarized and we see US become more of a bully in the world! Why would people trust to give the government all the guns? Prohibition doesn't work and creates more criminals than anything, happened with alcohol and drugs and if they outlaw guns it will happen. Though I'm interested in hearing the song and though I respectfully disagree with him, I will enjoy the song for what it is. I always enjoy hearing what he has to say socially in his music. The government is controlling the media and it is scary days.
What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Holding judgement until I hear it, but the lyrics don't sound especially thoughtful. A song like this needs real thought put into it, otherwise it'll seem artificial and at the very worst, a cash-in. However, it's obviously well intentioned and the song description is more promising, so we'll see.

Also, it's nice to read that his thoughts are with Joni Mitchell. I'm sure he's recorded something in tribute to her too.

I've heard songs that were 90% musica and 10% lyrics

the energy of the music set the tone for the lyrics

Also instrumentals named after Cities that just feels so much like the city

It would be cool for him to take the best part of those lyrics and let the music speak

get aggressive,

No, he is just in a different place, he won't get aggressive and that is ok

His beliefs will determine the song, and that is ok for it to come from his own perspective of the world

With respect, I think this is a cynical attempt by Prince to look for attention. Ok, perhaps he thinks his motives are pure but, let's face it, he needs to be checked. Where's Alan Leeds? Fast!

Let's see:

A very serious situation is going on in Baltimore right now. It has has wider implications for the whole of the country. I repeat: it's serious. So, what does Prince do? Why, knock off a quick "song" of course (well, a live scramble that ends with him ad libbing on guitar basically).

Then what happens? Well, nothing really. He doesn't release it. He teases. He just talks about it and then does a ticketed event at Paisley Park.

Wait, though. He does have a nice looking newscaster to talk about it on his behalf. Maybe he will release it? No, too late! We're still thinking about that sexy newscaster.

Ok, it gets released. Now. BUT. No one notices. Why? Because it's the same over-produced shit that never did anything for anybody post 1990. Maybe 15 fanatics will like it. Damn. Prince, work it out bud, seriously. You're on the verge of becoming an irrelevance.

With respect, but did you write this post because you thought you were justified in doing so, or because you're seeking attention? I think the answer to that question is the answer to why he would do what he did or why anyone does anything. We take the actions we consider to be the meaningful ones for us with the options we have at their disposal. End of story.

.

You're agreeing with me, right? I think.

Everything is not Negative because it may be critical. Some people here are just joking around.

But the org isn't the only place that takes a critical look at the career of Prince.

Yes there can be some outright negative comments people make. But that is life as well.
I personally have a hard time dealing with people who are in such an adoration of another that they even will condone bad behaviour the entertainer does just because of who they are. The is definately unrealistic thinking. No different than people who seem to hate another artist even though they don't know them. Unrealistic.

.

We will hear the song, I hope because he is my Prince it is good. But I will judge/critic it just like I do any other music, art, film, book etc
