The Mila J song Blinded is pretty good and so was the mixtape she released

Prince has just moved into modern times and its time most people on here moved to it aswell

You are not going to see another Purple Rain, Sign O The Times etc ever again

I like Clouds but like this better but thought The Breakdown was terrible

Parts of U Know have that Pharrell feel about it - its the sound at the moment so just deal with it

.

I like the fact that he has gone back to his black RnB sound

Maybe the only critisiscm is he has lost his edge a bit

I don't know why people assume that those who don't like this want another Purple Rain. PR isn't even in my top tier. And I can hate this track on the merits - not because I'm looking for a rehash of something else.

You may not, but I can't count the times I've read that he's not the same as he used to be, he used to be groundbreaking, what happened to the dude that wrote PR and SOTT. I wish people would just listen to a new track and like or dislike it for what IT is without some preconceived notion of what they think it's SHOULD be. It's really not fair. confused

Interesting that the so-called 'hardcore' Prince fans are hating 'U know' but the media is loving it and they haven't liked anything Prince since Musicology. It is a legitimate attempt at hit making from Prince in a long long time.'U know' IMO is a catchy, head-nodding, track that has caught the attention of young kids who haven't been exposed to Prince besides youtube. It's a smartly worked sample and vocal. I see complaints about it being simple, like Prince hits like 1999, I would die for you, If I was your GF, Sign of the times, etc aren't musically simple? Prince's early success has created an elitist/entitled group of fans that won't like anything unless if follows a certain "Prince" criteria. I heard from my uncle who is in the industry, who was a kid when Prince dropped his hallmark albums and he told me he couldn't stop playing the song. It's like fans here feel the need to hold Prince's talent to some otherworldly standard and blast him for making simple, good songs. I hated everything in 2000's besides a few tracks here and there. I joined this forum a few months ago and never posted until today because it's the first piece of music from Prince that actually made me get up and dance. I was eager to see what the fans thought and everywhere but here people love it. I actually heard it was on wbls radio in NY. Listen I'm not here to pass judgment for something so subjective like art and music. If you don't like it then fine that's an opinion you're welcome to have. I just want to say that if you're waiting on a ground breaking, soul changing Prince record, you're not gonna get that now so don't hold him to the standard he set 30 years ago. Prince is not wasting his talent, he already gave us the best music anyone could from 1978-1994. 'U know' is certainly not the worst thing he's ever done and not the best, it's a simple sample with good, catchy vocals that made me move. biggrin

dont forget that a lot of the reviews you will be reading are written by youngsters whose exposure to P will be back when they were very young / school age. Therefore they are listening through non biased younger ears rather than hardcore old ears like mine & yours! For P that's a really good thing. Now, if they would just sort out the marketing!

Frustrating for all the reasons I mentioned. I respect the opinions of others, I just hate that it's always so negative. In the ten pages of this thread, I haven't seen a single comment like that. I have, however, seen a lot of people who like this song accusing those who don't of a) being old and b) preferring to live in Prince's past. It's hugely irksome.

Maybe not this thread but it's common for fans to say his new music is bad/mediocre/etc because it's not as good as what he once did. Like I said, I respect everyones opinion and the fact that you're not a fan of this song. There are plenty that I dislike or downright HATE but I have a tendency to put myself in their shoes (not just his but the other people that worked on it) and knowing they might read this thread makes me feel bad for them, I guess.

come on prince, auto tuning? This song coming from an album called ART OFFICIAL AGE wich is a play on artificial age???Prince just do you and quit trying to fit in with the younger croud,It's getting embarassing. The name of your album is supposed to suggest what you always say,"real music by real musicians".

I'm with you, I hate the fucking auto tune. Since when do 'real musicians' that play 'real music' need auto tune. It is indeed embarrassing to say the least or just plain hypocritical.

Same here, the auto-tune is a joke for so-called 'real musicians' and Prince puts a hypocritical spin when it serves his purpose. Like when he said on the Arsenial Hall show that his beef with WB was they wanted him to release music faster (when it was the exact opposite) and he said he's 'oldskool' and is into releasing albums.... but his last 10 songs were released as singles. nuts

'U Know' makes me gag

'Breakdown' is success

'Rock n Roll Love Affair' = a hit

'Groovy Potential' and 'Extralovable Reloaded' are groovy

'Pretezbodylogic' stinks

'Breakfast Can Wait' and 'Clouds' are unmistakably Prince.

'Clouds' is growing on me.

I like it.

Prince songs go into many catagories for me, Screwdriver being a great house-cleaning, car washing song. Don't need to focus on every detail of it on repeated listens and just enjoy. Whereas songs like When Doves Cry, Thieves in the Temple, Anotherloverholenyohead (and many others) have me constantly listening trying to hear smething that I didn't hear before.

I don't know how well 'Rock n Roll Love Affair' was received but it's one of my favorites the past years. music

I love RNR Affair and Screwdriver. But from what we've heard they don't seem to fit sonically with either of the 2 upcoming albums. I'd imagine there was a project which included these at some point but it became another to fall by the wayside.

I agree I love RnR Love Affair. I think it wasn't included because it features Andy Allo and the prior incarnation of 3rdeyegirl before Donna joined. Of course they could have re-recorded it and released it. Just my 2 cents.

wow. utter shit.

What makes this song just a teensy bit decent, in my eyes, is that it follows Clouds, which is quite possibly the worst Prince song I've heard in my life, that shit made me wanna cry.

.

I agree with everyone who thinks this is gonna be Prince's worst album.. seriously, listening to the crappy 3rdeyegirl collabs/leaks and AOA leaks makes fucking Musicology and 3121 look like classics.

.

I may be a little biased, however. Musicology/3121/Planet Earth/Lotus came with a decent fashion, at least. Prince in suits, normal hair, professional looking, Idunno, but it somehow made the ERAS seem more likeable and maybe this added onto the fact the songs were no longer groundbreaking like in the 80s/90s but were still relatively enjoyable, not bad at all.

.

THIS SHIT TAKES THE CAKE, I SWEAR. Terrible terrible terrible fashion (those shades! those pants! those wierd ass fur things he drapes around himself! that horribly outdated afro not seen on Prince since 1978!) he looks more like a 2014 Jimi Hendrix tribute act playing Chris Brown outtakes lol lol

.

Seriously, even the mainstream artists of today Katy Perry etc are MUCH better than Prince. Why? Because nowadays Prince and them are all performing the same type of music. Only difference is they know how to do it and Prince is still stuck with his head up his ass, knowing that no matter what he puts out it'll be heralded as "THE NEWEST SONG OF ICON, LEGEND, MASTER PRINCE!!!!"

.

So fucking disappointing. I wasn't a Prince fan in 2010 (I became one in 2011) so this is my first Prince album released during my fandom. And WOW it's shaping up to be his worst album of all time barf

.

For a title like AOA (which sounds like his signature scream), I expected better!

Maybe eye do, just not like eye did before pimp2

Wait. So the quality of his music can be judged based on what he's wearing? sad

no, but when he starts looking like Jimi Hendrix and singing like Chris Brown, the whole image is just a complete turn-off. Like a fat panty-wearing clown playing the tamborine.

.

You're right though, the image shouldn't matter. However, when the music is already bad, a bad image doesn't make things any better
