Yeah that's my concern too. This would be fantastic news but I don't trust him. He has proven that he can completely sabatoge a good thing in terms of sales and getting himself out there but will he try to change the music or rerecord it?

Have we forgotten the disaster that was 1999 the remixes .... Ughhhh I just don't trust him.

Even now think about these relationships with Kobalt,Epic, and now Warners. A new album with Warners? Just do one thing. One solid really good peice of work that is accessible

I don't know if this is posted...but this is NOT the same WB's. Since his departure, there have been several changes and reorganizations. I'm sure the wait period matters in order to regain his property, but the corporation and the industry is an entirely different animal.

Some folks will do good to steer away from all that "this is what a real Prince fan is.." banter because it's BS. Regardless if a person just likes everything Prince does, or just likes one album, one song, or just like how Prince looks. They're ALL Prince fans! Let's not sound like Nazis, and demand to folks, "this is what it takes to be a fan..", because thought and what ones likes are solely left to the individual. A person can still be a fan either way!

Okay, I just looked at several of the articles about this story--does anyone have the actual press releases and "statements" from the various people involved? The main thing I'm wondering about is the statement attributed to Prince, in which he says

"A brand-new studio album is on the way and both Warner Bros Records and Eye are quite pleased with the results of the negotiations and look forward to a fruitful working relationship."

Is Prince making two announcements here, or one? Is it "I've got this new album coming, and, in other news, I've got a new deal with Warner for old stuff" or is it "Hey!! I'm a Warner Brothers recording artist again, check out this new Warner album!!"

The statements from Warners people don't seem to me to be mentioning a "brand-new studio album"--they seem to be talking about just stuff with the old catalog and related projects like "deluxe editions." (The USA TODAY article is I assume way off in its description of the deal including ALL of Prince's albums from For You to his yet unreleased new album). I would expect an explicit comment from Warners if they had new material (not just "previously unheard" vault or live recordings).

I know on at least one other thread a statement has been made by an orger indicating that they believe that other labels are no longer part of the Prince release picture for the moment--how do the rest of you read this?

I hadn't looked at Funkenberry--he seems to (as far as what he presents) be basing it on the same Prince statement, but it's possible he has more information that makes it less ambiguous. If in fact he knows (as he says in one tweet) that the Epic deal was definitely just for one song, then that makes it more believable. But how inside is Funkenberry, really?

I don't care who releases a new album (or albums), honestly--I just hope it's soon.

The thing about the Epic deal being just for one song was also mentioned by music journalist Bill Werde at the time.

Funkenberry is VERY inside the Prince camp. It was through Funkenberry is how Jester Jenkens got to meet Prince and go to his concert. There is a video about it on youtube. Here is the video: http://youtu.be/97GAUzT-9ik

Well, yes--but does that mean Prince tells Fb his business? I know there's been contact between Funkenberry and Prince-world--but I can't actually think of too many times when news breaks on Funkenberry that isn't all over the web anyway. He seems (to me, at least) to be working from the same release as everyone else, and making a conclusion based on one possible reading of an ambiguous statement. Some people seem to be reading it that way, others are reading it another way.

Yes, it's a good day but the time to get REALLY excited is when this stuff is in your hands. I've seen Prince lose interest in a project umpteen times. I wouldn't expect too many remastered albums either. In fact, if it ends after Purple Rain I wouldn't be surprised...and I bet that's in the CONtract too.

warners are more likely to give him each master AFTER the album is remastered and released.

so that makes it also likely that we'll get his first 10 albums remastered. warners must be keen

to release remastered versions because everyone and their uncle have managed to remaster

and rerelease even their obscurest albums so there must be some money in it for the company.

/

i'm confident that we'll see his warners catalogue remastered in the next few years. the only

thing that is subject to wild speculation is 'the bonus content'.

/

however, if not now than when will he even have a better opportunity to make money from his

vault? the remasters are great promo and vice versa. warners is distributing and pressing the

cds. no separate deals for each album or release, all under the same deal. plus he gets to keep

the masters to those bonustracks as well.

/

so that means these vault tracks would get a decent, mastered, cd quality release and serve to

drum up more interest from the public, as well as the press having a field day writing about how

amazing some of this stuff is that prince stacked up on the shelves for 20 years.

/

he'll never get a better opportunity to put everything where it belongs, tie up loose ends and for

once and for all solidify his legacy.

/

but since this is prince we could also just get LGC Reloaded and a Josh mix of Take Me With U lol

Everything you say about the timing of it all makes sense. Which is exactly the reason why it won't happen that way. It may be that SOTT and the rest will get a remastered releases but something tells me there won't be any bonus content. I suppose this is still good. He's too used to having the extra stuff locked away.

Since reports are that The Breakdown is now on iTunes (with Warner Brothers as licensing)--I withdraw my question and assume we're moving forward with Warner--and to filthyrichyuppie, new information has indeed changed what seems most logical to me (as it always could, unless you're a crackpot).

Now, since I haven't done iTunes on this computer, the question is: Do I wait and assume someone else will make this available, or do I install the thing and get a new account with them?

There is a simple answer to this. Release the one album earlier in the year, then release the next album later in the year.

Eminem and Justin Timberlake already done this last year, and both albums were very successful for both artists. No confusion.

On the other thread where Militant was suggesting two releases with Epic doing the Prince album and Kobalt handling 3rdEyeGirl (leading to some discussion about guesses and logic), you had asked "So,...is this still "the current logical assumption based upon the hard recent evidence that we have".

I assume you asked because of the Warner announcement. Based on what's happened today, Militant's theory seems to have been at the very least partially incorrect. (Plectrumelectrum might still be coming some other way, but Prince seems to be working with Warner and not Epic).
