No, he wasn't.

Actually, he was correct. He was pointing out that a lot of people jumped on the hype with "Purple Rain", and then didn't remain fans afterwards. It happens to most artists. There's a lot of people for whom "Thriller" is the only MJ album they own. I wouldn't call those people Michael Jackson fans, either.

And regardless, disagreeing with an opinion doesn't allow you to call them names. That's against the rules and it's why I snipped your post.

Not sure that's a bad thing though. It's possible that only certain aspects of something touch a person in the way that makes them fans of that particular feeling persay, not necessarily fans of the whole. I think it's possible that that would still make them fans, right?

Of course, that's only my own 2 cents. I'd sure hate for it to be considered "flaming" at all...

Totally, I never said it was a bad thing. There's plenty of artists who I only own one album of, and I'm sure most of us here with large music collections can say the same. But I wouldn't really say I was a fan of the artist in general. I think it depends how you define the term. Historically, fan is shorthand for "fanatic" (the same reason Prince has said he doesn't really like the term), and I don't personally think that owning one album (particularly if it's their most popular one) can qualify you as a fanatic.

Tokyo

Like everyone on this thread, I was of course initially excited about the news, who wouldn't be...and I've read all of the comments here.

What I would say is that being balanced about this, history suggests that whatever a fan's personal hopes and expectations are I.e. Extremely high, and based on an extensive knowledge of material that even the artist no longer carries round in their head, disappointment may lie around the corner.

During the mid 90s Prince broke free and released approximately 7-8 CDs in a relatively short period of time, Crystal Ball and Emancipation. These were patchy at best, but with flashes of genius and one or two surprises.

Also whether you're talking about lyrics or the mix of the tracks themselves, Prince has always edited and reworked material. Purple Rain the studio track is an overdubbed live recording, It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night also. In addition tracks like We Can Funk were re-done but not improved. The demo-ish version of the latter song which has a beautiful solo by Miko Weaver is excellent, but will I hear that in studio quality? it's unlikely.

We have such an extensive knowledge of this stuff because we are collectors of it. This is a worldwide press release, and it is targeting sales of a purple rain reissue. Most music fans know the key prince tracks but a lot of casual fans buy deluxe repackaged albums, I know I do!

In my head I know all of the things I want from this "announcement"...but as someone once said "you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need."

I hope for all of you here, it's a good package and not too much of a shortfall when it arrives.

Final thought is that this is a project, and the interest in it will die down eventually, I just hope the artist can somehow view it as a long term project now.

I can see your point. Makes sense. I would only slightly disagree (may even be too strong of a word) in saying that I do believe you can be a fan of the person who made you feel a certain way...even if it is only the WAY in which it made you feel. If I dig a certain album of an artist and not the entire catalogue, I'd stil consider myself a fan. But, that's just me...

Agree. I consider myself a huge James Brown fan, even though I just own 3 of his albums, and think a lot of his albums are very uneven at least when it comes to the songs, melodies and lyrics. The music is tight and funky for the most part though. But if fan is short for fanatic like Prince said, then no I'm not. The word fan has been watered down, and doesn't mean the same anymore. If you're an enthusiast that are able to be skeptical to what sounds whack, you can still be a fan IMO.

Purple Rain getting remastered is kind of good news, even though it's 20 years too long in coming. I honestly am not that interested in purchasing it unless I hear for sure that Prince resisted the urge to censor the music as he has done repeatedly to his catalog material over the last 15 years or so. NPGMusicClub, live, no matter what... the music has been censored. If it turns out that the album and outtakes are in the form fans have long asked for, I'll be pleased. Again, though I think there is no chance of that happening. Too bad we are not getting a reunited Revolution album and tour to support the reissues, but I guess that makes too much sense for Prince to ever allow. I'm sure he's getting off on throwing it back in their faces. "Donna?" "Yes Hannah" "Is the water warm enough". "Yes Hannah". I'm imagining 3rdeyegirl featuring Prince promoting a reissued Prince and The Revolution album by infusing the old tracks live with their goofy version of the sounds popular on radio and my excitement level for all things Prince hits zero. Not to mention Prince wearing that crooked afro wig... sigh.. I need more than a deal for reissues to care about Prince music in 2014. This deal includes what, from what we've heard so far, seems like the all time low in terms of the quality of new music for Prince's career. I fear WB told Prince whatever he needed to hear to get the deal done, "Yeah we hear 3 or 4 number 1 hits on your new album", and then, based on Prince's past behavior with blaming the labels when his record don't sell, this thing will end with more lawsuits than remastered releases.

Are you on crack? Put the pipe down before you post. The truth is P got what he wanted out of WB and we the fans are going to get we want. You are just being negative to be negative.

WOW eek would love to know the details of this agreement!!!! So exciting though, hope we see something sooner rather than later!! Congrats to Prince on getting those masters back!! clapping clapping clapping excited

.

"WOW" is right...After a crazy week I'm just getting to read the news of the P. & WB deal today. Excellent news for fans; absolutely fabulous news for Prince.

.

naffi, I think you're about the only person in this entire thread (up to the time of posting this reply) who congratulated Prince on regaining ownership of his masters. Surprised so few fans here mentioned this. If I'm reading the release and articles correctly, this news marks the end of a long, hard-won battle for a cause that has meant so very much to him and was a source of deep dissatisfaction and contention for him (completely understandable considering the critical role ownership plays in an artist's long-term financial security). The victory is well earned. I didn't know if we'd ever see the light of day where the ownership of Prince's songs would be rightfully returned to him.

.

On a side note, I'm also pleased this major coup resulted from amicable negotions with the company he has so much storied history with, and which helped him find his audience, live his dreams, and connect with us and the world.

Couldn't be happier right now for our Dearly Beloved. This long-awaited reunion of P. & his songs is decades in the making and worthy of celebration. nutty

.

CONGRATULATIONS PRINCE ON GETTING YOUR MASTERS BACK!!!!!! thumbs up! clapping Much love to you on these most auspicious tidings. (Hope to see more news like this for other artists in the industry as well.) May the newly brokered deal with WB bring you continued prosperity.

I think in common usage, though, fan and fanatic are not used interchangably.

I can be a fan of a particular restaraunt and yet only ever order one dish off their menu. I might just LOVE that one dish and think the others are ok but only ever come back again and again for the same dish.

So, I think someone can only own one Prince album and still consider themselves a fan. That doesn't mean everyone who bought the album is a fan but don't think the number of his albums you own is the definitive way to judge.

i hope the sign o the times remaster gives songs like crystal ball, dream factory, last heart, movie star the propoer release they deserve .. packaged with sign

i also hope wb maintains quality control and does not let prince delete tracks like darling nikki or erotic city .. if that happens we wont be getting electic intercourse either

i always said prince efforts to curb boots and youtube were meant for this sort of remaster release .. maybe the long wait will pay off and we will even get all those videos he never released

i cant see a pr release having anything less than 4 cds to start .. if he goes gonzo he could include the birthday and benefit shows as well as a solid pr tour plus all the b sides and out takes of course.. meh make that 5 disk minimum .. hell throw in a dvd .. 6

Reissues / remasters are most welcome. I'm just sort of baffled that he wants his new material released on WB too. Maybe the people holding the strings at WB have changed so thoroughly that there's no one left there that he hates personally.

I'm counting on him including some inexplainable bonus tracks on the PR reissue instead of the more obvious B-Sides or outtakes everyone wants to hear in good sound quality. Like excluding "Erotic City" and "Electric Intercourse" and including a live version of "Delirious" (from a different tour, obviously), or something like that. razz

nuts nuts I think Prince is making a big mistake signing on again with WB they screwed him once, they will more then likely do it again. YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Prince? omg nuts shrug

WB treated Prince fine. Prince was just too greedy to get that $100 Million!

the slave thing? really? Now he says he can take his time as he is not being rushd by the company. He was not under any oblgation to do an album a year. He always said they were limiting his output!

Oh and this news seems to back up when i have said that he may not own the rights to the vault. I bet he charged WB for the stuido time.

Here's hoping that Prince will do the following:

  1. Not change or edit a single thing on the albums
  2. Remaster the albums appropriately without the brickwalling that he's used on his albums since the mid/late 90's.
  3. Package them in durable packaging, none of the cardboard sleeve garbage.
  4. Bonus tracks appropriate to the period.
  5. Live albums from the period.
