Whatever he does, I just want him to release music! We have had so many announcements in the last 24 months, but almost nothing came to see the light. Will NPG Music Publishing change anything? I guess not. [Edited 4/5/14 8:00am] |

If Prince did close his bank account and kept the $ under his bed
there are people on this site that would say that it is
groundbreaking and a masterpiece. |

Now that this is settled - how about publishing some music? Perhaps the album that's been talked to death for a year and a half by the guy who "is old school - records albums" but has only seen a steady trickle of singles for nearly four years? Love the man and his music - let's get back to the reason we all hang around: the tunes and the love of something new. |

If Prince announced tomorrow that he is re-recording his Purple Rain album and releasing it in August no one would care and no one would buy it.
It would be in the top 10 if not the number one spot on the top 100 billboard chart.
Purple Rain through out the last 29 years has sold on average of 100, 000 (minimum)
copies a year world wide.
Then why in the world dont artists who dont have the success and money they once had just re-record their old albums and release them? i disagree wholeheartedly that it would sell well. |

Pretty much.
My initial thoughts on this were like errant's ("what does it even mean"?). I've read quite a bit on music publishing back in the day when such things still interested me and I am sure there are some pitfalls, but I can't figure out what's really motivating him to do this other than use it as just another display of "being able to control your own material". It means a LOT of money. Most (if not all) of his WB stuff is ASCAP. If he's getting publishing rights to the WB catalog, that's worth millions. Publishing rights are about getting paid every time a song (or portion) is used ANYWHERE. [Edited 4/5/14 10:46am] "He's a musician's musician..." |

Seems like all the money he makes by pimping out his famous tracks (aka 70s,80s,90s) should be spent on a better airbrusher to hide the fact he's actually 20 years older now than when most people thought he'd retired with some dignity still intact...anybody who seen him up close knows he doesn't look like that really now

he already had those publishing rights. and licensed them to Universal.
now he's ... licensing them to himself. we've seen how Prince's forays into business have gone before. this is the next fiasco. "does my cock look fat in these jeans?" |

I think this is a positive step for Prince, first and foremost he seems to have gained full control over his back catalogue which I think is a massive step forward for any artist let alone an African American artist, who for many years have been used and abused by the record industry. Secondly for all those people saying Prince will omit certain songs from his past, it's possible but at the end of the day it's his art to mess with, I would prefer to see all his albums re-issued as they are but that's not my choice....it's his art, and I think as the creative force behind it all its his prerogative! I salute you Prince for blazing yet another trail!! Interviewer: What's it like to be the greatest guitarist in the world?
Clapton: I don't know, you'd better ask Prince |

Great news for Prince. Good for him to own his own stuff and treat it as he sees fit. I ask myself why would WB relinquish their grip on his stuff early though? (the 35 year rule is out of the window it seems) Either Prince offered a lot of money or WB don't see any further mileage in his old stuff.
.
I hope it's the latter so Prince will have a go at proving them wrong and we (at last and at least!) get remastered deluxe versions of his classic albums. Yes, i'm being selfish. |

Prince Is Going to Publish His Own Music Catalog, Leaves Universal
http://www.showbiz411.com...-universal
Oh Prince! He’s a stranger in a strange land. He sent out a press release today announcing that NPG Music Publishing is his new music publisher. Of course,Prince is NPG, New Power Generation, so that means he’s publishing himself. He was published previously by Universal Music Publishing.
Why the change? And why do it himself? It’s a big job administrating a music publishing catalog. Few do it. Paul McCartney has had his own company for years. But most everyone goes through one of the big firms. I’m sure any of them would have been happy to do it, for a good price. But Prince funks to his own inner drum beat. He established NPG Music Publishing just a month ago as an LLC.
Who will run it, staff it, etc? He says, “The team will be led by some of the best talent in the industry.” This is Swahili for “We don’t know.” Indeed, to demonstrate that point, Prince adds: “NPG Music Publishing is now actively seeking placement for some of Prince’s best-loved songs in film, television, video games and the commercial realm.”
He will be on Santa Monica and Wilshire tomorrow in front of Starbucks wearing a sandwich board and accepting offers. |

The "commercial use" thing is kind of a bummer. I've loved pointing out to folks that whatever Prince may be, he's no sellout (unlike a certain other Pepsi-shilling now deceased pop star I can mention).
I've pointed out that long ago, P could have made millions selling Kiss to Revlon, or You Got The Look to Maybelline, or Let's Go Crazy to Six Flags, but no, the songs and his integrity were far too important to him.
Um, so much for that? |
