Prince Is Going to Publish His Own Music Catalog, Leaves Universal

http://www.showbiz411.com...-universal

Oh Prince! He’s a stranger in a strange land. He sent out a press release today announcing that NPG Music Publishing is his new music publisher. Of course,Prince is NPG, New Power Generation, so that means he’s publishing himself. He was published previously by Universal Music Publishing.

Why the change? And why do it himself? It’s a big job administrating a music publishing catalog. Few do it. Paul McCartney has had his own company for years. But most everyone goes through one of the big firms. I’m sure any of them would have been happy to do it, for a good price. But Prince funks to his own inner drum beat. He established NPG Music Publishing just a month ago as an LLC.

Who will run it, staff it, etc? He says, “The team will be led by some of the best talent in the industry.” This is Swahili for “We don’t know.” Indeed, to demonstrate that point, Prince adds: “NPG Music Publishing is now actively seeking placement for some of Prince’s best-loved songs in film, television, video games and the commercial realm.”

He will be on Santa Monica and Wilshire tomorrow in front of Starbucks wearing a sandwich board and accepting offers.

Bart's not a troll....he's just brave enough not to deny the truth to himself the way the rest of you stans do...

Bart's internet posts about prince have been 100% consistenly negative for well over 20 years. They predate prince.org. They even predate Prince's name change back in teh day where the usenet group alt.music.prince was the only place on the internet to discuss Prince. In all of those years I don't think I've seen Bart post one positive thing about anything new Prince has done.

Assuming all 3 are still alive then, 20 years from now I don't expect KCOOL to still be around posting MASTERPIECE to everything Prince does but I do still expect to see Bart still around ripping it.

I don't understand why people have a problem with this. So he wants to have the publishing rights to his own music? Cool. Right?

This is not a new thing. The publishing deal with Universal ended back in 2012. So i think he is

independent since.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/prince-universal-music-publishing-split-contract-346630

This is just a reminder to the public/ the music business that he is doing it by himself

or his company NPG Musicpublishing now and actively looking for deals like that with New Girl or other licensing deals...

If this works i will give him more control and money as a publisher usually gets 30-40% of the income.

Yes! I don't know why its being reported that it ended last month. Maybe its a period where artist have to wait. But whatever the reason. Its on now for Prince & I couldn't be happier for him! But its a lot more hard work he has to do. But he has no middle man taken his millions anymore. It proves Prince really loves his many children.

Good, I can only hope. Bart rips the lid off the myth that Prince is a superman, and while he (was) of course a very talented musician, he's nothing more than that. Period. So get over it.

First and foremost, this has nothing to do with remasters or the upcoming release of Plectrum Electrum.

.

This is a notice that his music will be available for purchase to be used in films, commercials, video games and most likely the inevitable hip-hop sampling.

.

This is going to be a huge cash cow for Prince, since his music has largely been "off limits" for this kinda of usage.

.

As a fan, you're going to start hearing his music a lot more - especially in commercials. There will be the expected Little Red Corvette Chevrolet commercial, guaranteed! There might also be the U Got The Look Cover Girl commercial and the Kiss Cover Girl commercial.

.

It's his music to do with as he pleases, and if this new venture brings him millions upon millions, then good for him.

Frankly, I forsee the use of his music in other media decreasing after this move.

You are correct. Bart has a personal gripe with Prince, and for some reason thinks the best way to address that is post about it to everyone except Prince.

Dude just needs to confront Prince man-to-man and resolve whatever issues he has. Calling Prince names on a message board Prince doesn't ever read isn't really resolving anything.

And if Prince DOES read this, or has people that do, obviously Bart's strategy isn't working and hasn't worked for over 20 years.

It means a LOT of money. Most (if not all) of his WB stuff is ASCAP. If he's getting publishing rights to the WB catalog, that's worth millions. Publishing rights are about getting paid every time a song (or portion) is used ANYWHERE.

[Edited 4/5/14 10:46am]

he already had those publishing rights. and licensed them to Universal.

now he's ... licensing them to himself. we've seen how Prince's forays into business have gone before. this is the next fiasco.

How he will be getting all of the money instead of portion. If he starts licensing music like crazy he will make millions. I honestly think that it bother you and a lot of others to see this guy on top of his business game. Granted everything he does it not successful but he is not living on a grate down on the highway or going along with the B.S. in the music industry.

NPG Music Publishing was founded by Artists for Artists. The team will be led by some of the best talent in the industry.

Wonder who will actually be doing it, Julia now that Donna's husband seems to be the manager?

Good question, nothing has really been said about Controversy Music, perhaps it is being kept for those songs that Prince does not want commercialised?

I dont think this is going to change anything. Universal had the publishing rights, but Prince still seemed to have the last say otherwise Universal would have lisenced his songs out to all kinds of stuff.

.

He will still probably say "no" to any commercials etc. But he will make more money from any air play he gets on the radio for any of his songs. All in all, about $12.50 a year.

It does bother me. Because I love him as an artist. He's my favorite. It really bothers me to see him marginalize his music and his legacy the way he has. Licensing music takes a professional infrastructure with a decent amount of overhead and we all know that Prince isn't willing to put money into any of that.

I don't get the significance.

Doesn't this just mean that the Kobalt deal is dead and that he uses a (his own) music publishing company for his music? Maybe Controversy Music is closed? Maybe not? And NPG Publishing now has a website. And is looking for staff.

Sounds to me like a lot of work.

I don't care how he publishes his music. I care about the music he publishes. Where is that Plectrum Electrum album? I've already lost interest, tbh.

Frankly, I forsee the use of his music in other media decreasing after this move.

I believe that his mindset has changed recently, in that he finally realizes (or desires) how much money licensing his songs can bring in - and that now he will receive most of the money instead of WB/Universal getting their cut.

.

On a side note, I think that the new stream of Prince reference in pop culture and media will drive up record sales overall. Not mind-blowingly, but classic albums like 1999 and Purple Rain are sure to receive a good boost in sales (or the individual songs on iTunes, etc).

That's exactly what this press release was saying -- it was opening the door to anyone who wants to use Prince's music. There was also the caveat of "songs that are suitable for eternal distribution", meaning that Prince himself would not license stuff like Sister, Head, Darling Nikki, etc. He will probably only allow "clean" songs to be used.

.

Make no mistake - requests will still have to go through a stringent approval process by NPG to make sure his music is not portrayed in a bad light.

I think if he can more of his music out to the masses be it new or old that he will doing the opposite of marginalizing it. The public will get a chance to hear it with no worries about what the radio will play. He has an incredible catalogue that the average person does not know anything about. Any manner that he can get out is going to pay off.
