Ummmm.... Prince licensed his songs.... to himself?

WTF does this even mean? And how is it news?

He gave gontrolnof licensing to a third party for large, famous portions of the catalogue. The degree of leeway they have to make licensing decisions is likely limited, not of free reign status, but at least is isn't Prince doing it. Prince is emotionally invested in many of these tunes and has avoided many lucrative deals that flop on his desk due to this emotional investment and desire to keep his 'chirren unbastardized'

With a third party having more control, soundtrack deals(which have been minimal), video games(which prince avoided like the Ebola virus) and probably samples in pop music and commercials(only little red corvette and hot thing... Other acts have multitudes of tunes in commercials...commercials equal exposure) as well...also helping to make the decisions of where and how new music is to be released(a la FALLINLUV2NITE) instead of prince doing all of that himself as well as making music. Music is likely to start flowing faster. For the services...npgpublishing operators get a cut.

I'm no publishing contract lawyer, but from what I've read this seems to be the boulevard taken.

Some reports make it sound third party...some make it sound in-house and under more of princes control...I'm am confused now like many others.

A 3rd party that just happens to be called NPG Music Publishing?? Um, ok. LOL

Not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, it will be nice to hear more of his work in new media but I don't want him to do anything with the stuff we love but he no longer wants to be associated with. sad

We may still get the remasters. Only problem is he will probably change them. I really don't want to hear Purple Rain being Darlin Nikkiless or Dirty Mind Headless. Thats probably what he will do though if the remasters ever materialize.

No!! That would be sacrilege, he wouldn't really do that, would he??

"NPG Music Publishing is now actively seeking placement for some of Prince's songs in film, television, video games and the commercial realm."
Interesting..

I found this interesting too, assuming it will only be certain songs that would be allowed to be used.

If he could, i think the removal of all existing WB cd stock and itunes uploads (also radio/streaming services) would be a good move and then re-introduce remasters one by one and create a buzz for them.

If Prince announced tomorrow that he is re-recording his Purple Rain album and releasing it in August no one would care and no one would buy it.

It would be in the top 10 if not the number one spot on the top 100 billboard chart.

Pssht, don't count on it. No doubt P will have a ridiculously inflated idea of what kind of money he can demand -- I bet that's why he left Universal Music.

If only we had some kind of previous example, let's say a "1999 Remaster". I wonder if that would have been a massive hit, or perhaps not since the people only care about the ORIGINAL VERSION.

.

Also, for the love of Jebus, can everyone please READ what is said and not babble on about remasters WHICH HAS GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH MUSIC PUBLISHING.

All I see here is that Prince is gonna be able to make money off the catalogue without giving fans (and music history in general) what they want: proper-sounding remasters of the classic albums.

Sure, he can pimp out Cream, Kiss, and Raspberry Beret, maybe even make a bag of money. But the deeper cuts are just gonna get buried further under the dirt.

I hope that, like Bart says, no one coughs up the kind of dough that P's asking for. Then maybe he can finally wake up and give his catalogue the respect it deserves...
