yeahthat

awful video, good song.

I have seen the video once, I am never gonna watch it again... hopefully. sad

I forgot:

I have always thought Prince himself were "fighting against" meaningless "MTV videos" that have nothing else to offer than young dancers.

The song itself is rather good, sweet, sexy, steamy.. the video just sucks, it is not capturing this at all.

Prince wanted this video to be a creative encounter, offering fresh, young talent [the chance] to 'visualize' together," a spokeswoman for Prince told Pop & Hiss. "He was there for the shoot and approved the treatment, but gave all control to this 18-year-old. There were no managers, agents [or] label people there -- just young talent collaborating for a very unique experience."

Embarrassing video for his weakest single release in years.

Prince is coming off as desperate to stay in touch with the youth of today but comes across as more out of touch than ever. That video was like someone ripping off Janet in the 90's only with a shoestring budget.

Still love the song, and I'm going to keep playing it wink

So there was actual food in the video, but no Prince. Too bad. I would rather see him do his own cameos, not an impersonator. I wish he was peeking out from under the covers, or in his satin pajamas being served at his breakfast table. I like Giovanni's idea of him being in the studio, (I really liked the Beautiful Strange video). This isn't what I expected at all, but it was Prince's call (obviously). The video is hard to follow, to see where they were going with it.

The new dancer is very pretty. Visually, she looks like a young Sheila. She can move and groove. Andy started off artsy fartsy, not funky, so it wasn't believable to me when she switched up. The new one is starting out funky right out of the gate. The dancing was much better than Damaris, (sorry Damaris). The dancing doesn't relate to the song at all, but it was also better than the snippet that I saw from the Screwdriver video.

Wanted to be seduced by the video, the feeling you get when you are with done one who really knows you and what you like, but instead it was like a quick one night stand, no real connection. But I guess that is what you get from a teenager growing up in the 50 shades of grey era, just thought there would be more of connection to the song.
Could have gone something like this:-
Someone like Salma Hayek or Nicole Schering in bed fast asleep
Prince in the kitchen in a silk robe and apron, cooking pancakes reminiscing about the night before.
A flashback of Them on the table just inside the front door, P grins
A flashback of them in a bath, P smiles and shakes his head
Them lying on the floor in front of the open fire, P smiles again
Them in bed,
So P brings the breakfast tray into the bedroom, puts it bedside the bed, his lady is awake and smiling as he gets back into bed, as Dave Chapelle knocks on the front door with a bag of croissants

It could have been so much better in the right hands. I just watched the Emmy award show, the choreographers nominated there - any one of those guys - or any other seasoned professional who can come up with a hot concept and innovative stuff,.. And they'd love the chance to do a Prince video.

Why wasn't the task put in the right hands? Maybe because Prince likes to give opportunities to people - make their wish come true (see above LA Times article). Some of these people are random fans - he lets them jam with him, come to concerts VIP for free, work for his charities, be his personal assistant. Sometimes, it's actually someone talented, like Andy McKee. He can be generous, that's great.

Then there are the cute young chicks. If you're a cute young chick, the chances are higher that you'll get a plum opportunity from Prince to do something that you haven't deserved based on your own achievements.

It's great that he seems to really believe in them, really want to help make their wishes come true, really want to mentor and teach ... it just kind of sucks when these opportunities are at the expense of the fan experience. Like, it's great that Danielle gets a great experience, but he should prioritize giving fans a great experience - if both can happen, wonderful; but if you have to choose, then don't short-change the fans.

Fans want a cool video that they enjoy watching more than once. They want great live performances. They want the best songs you can muster. Instead, we get a video directed and choreographed by a nobody (in the business, I mean. I'm sure she's a somebody in life). We get "air-guitar" posing at concerts by a wanna-be star. We get awkward arm-flailing on stage by a model who "always wanted to be a dancer." We get under-par vocals on great songs like "All This Love." And then there's the "spokewoman" of the above article, the recent USC grad given the fabulous opportunity of being his manager. What a disappointment!

I think "Breakfast Can Wait" is a fine song. Not among his all-time greatest, of course, but quite good. If it were on Timberlake's current album, it'd be a hit single (and as someone else mentioned, it'd be delivered, produced differently if JT did it). AND, it'd definitely have a really cool video, because, no matter your opinion of Timberlake, he always wants the best people in the biz handling his stuff. Unlike our hero, the one-man make-a-wish-foundation.

Oh well, I guess I don't need to see a great video from P; I watched Janelle Monae's videos today and the fabulousness of those more than makes up for this disappointment.

Hmmmm....

Things I like- Danielle looks amazing in the video & very beautiful. I like the choreography & the dancing is slick & hot. I got that it's sexy like the imagery of the song. Like the reference to breakfast in the sequence at the start (just wish it hadn't parodied a cheesy porn film.) Love her dressed as Chapelle as Prince, that was funny & they coulda played more on that.

Didn't like how the sexual roleplay part had to involve such nasty looking clothing! And if the dancing part was supposed 2b them having sex, then were they also imagining an orgy? confuse Why does sexy need to look trashy & so hard? This song, as sexy as it sounds, isn't hard. It's clean durty lol

Hated how predatory the lead male was. There was not a nice look on his face, far, far too aggressive IMHO. Nice when a man takes the initiative & all... but come on he looked like he was hunting on the savannah or something! And that made me feel uneasy. Surely to God they didn't feel they needed to be so sexual just to be relevant along with this recent spate of overly sexualized videos from the likes of Rhianna, Miley & Britney?? Am I just being a total prude? wink
Smh, too much of that being pushed these days. Overall it didn't look slick or polished enough, as if not a lot of money was spent on it.

To me, the video just does not match the music. Do u guys think its because we've had this song for so long that we've all digested it & picture Prince in the video? Do u think the video woulda been better received amongst fans if we were only just hearing the song for the 1st time along with the video??

Anyway, at the end of the day the girl Danielle did really well for being only 18 (?) & what an incredible opportunity for her to have P showcase her. She is a great dancer & must b feeling on top of the world right now, so good on her. clapping

But saddly the song & video are a mismatch to me.

Well said. The fan hook ups don't affect the art, so I don't mind that. I think it's nice when he connects with fans, does special things for them.

I definitely agree with the air guitar, flailing armed dancing, first time director for a big name artist, & inexperienced management. It does throw the fans off. Even the art work for 3rd Eye. I liked the artist's other art work but the 3rd eye girl painting looks a little strange, and it's on everything. I see Prince always finds new folks for his camp, but it's great when his new folks have talent like Sheila or Misty, etc. No offense to Danielle, but directing a full scale video for an established artist is a big assignment for a first timer. The story never quite came together for this video.

Maybe he's just paying forward the opportunities he felt he was given when young. Prolly a bit of talent mining too. If people passed on him cuz of his ageage and or/precieved lack of talent cuz it it, he'd possibly still b playing up at 4 corners doing his own perms and wearing jeans from the jcpenny children's catalogue, paired with a crisp shirt and smart vest.

He ain't none worse off for this video...not manybwatch em to begin with. This girl got some invaluable experience to put on her resume. He prolly had to pay her pennies on the dollar...and got some phat rump wiggling to boot.

Te amo corozon was a nice video, but it didn't help nothing. Black sweat was slick...meh.

Let me clarify a bit. My statement wasn't based on this video alone. My statement was based on what seems to be or may be a pattern of decision making based on some of the comments in this thread (ie, Prince is a one man make a wish foundation). I wasn't insinuating that he's headed to the poor house or the pit of talentlessness due to this one video. My statement was a general one because I was curious why Prince would feel the need to be a one man make a wish foundation. That particular comment suggests this decision / video isn't a "one off" deal. It's rather a pattern of decision making.

I assume it's a pretty cheap video, just a bunch of dancers and whoop, there you go - but it looks slick. That's the way to do it these days, no need for expensive videos any more when you can make them look professional on the cheap.

This could do well in the US, I assume it's aimed at the US since it has that horrible blah US R&B radio sound, it makes me think of NPS and the NPGMC stuff. Snoozefest.

Seems he never learns though - the song has been available forever, the single cover got loads of attention - all free promo, but that too was months ago, and now a video with no album info on the horizon at all. So it's promoting, well, nothing at all. Oh Prince, get a f-ing manager, if only in name only, just get a decent dogs body who can put all the pieces together - and not some 22yo girl you wanna bone.

How about this for an idea for that video?

.

Video opens with someone cooking breakfast. Next shot is Prince in the studio where he's working on the music for this song.

.

His studio phone rings. He answers, "hello?". The voice on the line is the person cooking breakfast. She says, "Breakfast is almost ready."

.

Prince does a quick exhale through the nose (amused mini-laugh), and says, "Breakfast can wait. I gotta finish this."

.

He hangs up, looks a bit pensive momentarily, then smirks. He then plays back what he's layed down, and goes to the vocal booth/console room to lay down newly inspired vocals/lyrics.

.

Shots alternate between Prince alone in the studio and the breakfast being cooked, plated, and served.

.

At the end of the video, Prince walks into the kitchen and says "Thanks."

.

The Woman says, "For what? Breakfast?"

.

Prince says, "4 the idea."

.

She says, "What idea?"

.

Prince says, "Breakfast... can wait."

.

She says, "Again?"

.

Prince says, "Nevermind. Thanks."

.

[Edited 10/11/13 11:07am]

That could've been nice as well but this where fans begin to snuggle up to disappointment. Prince will never create the fantasy floating around in your head and you will always feel let down in the end. You basically worked out aa entire video treatment in your head. Nothing he does will erase or top that.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

The occasional touch of flair e.g. the lookalike, the choreography in places and the concept on those rare moments when it is in sync with the actual song, but overall, the video is just weak, unfortunately. The song, however, is sick. Great Prince tune. Great little ditty. Bring on the maxi single extended version.

This is Prince's best joke ever -- you just need to decide if it is musically rewarding.

Self-deprecation is often phony, but when it is honest, it can be liberating. I am glad to see that Prince is able to laugh at himself even thought the whole thing is as corny as can be.

It's meta Prince folks.

Dude is not that smart. That's a simple fact.

He just has the hots for this 18 year old dancer and thus lets her direct and star in his new video.
