Not even fucking CLOSE. Despite being one of my least favorite Pumpkins songs, 1979 is a well-crafted piece of alterna-pop. L.O.L. sounds like a commercial for Massengill. And, you know, maybe one day I'll be in the mood for a douche jingle, but it's nothing close to a classic like 1979.

Shit, it's nothing close to a fun, badly sung pop song like "Happy Birthday, Mr. Christian."

I agree that "LOL" is nowhere near as good as "1979," but it doesn't have to be to remind me of it. Besides, after hearing people compare it to "Sex on Fire" and "Love is a Battlefield," those comparisons are more apt.

I really like the fact that they reached out to a fan to put it out, that was FUN...

Alas L.O.L. just isn't my cup of tea, I don't like it, listened to it a few times, just cannot get into it, it feels very "bland"...

I'm glad some folks seem to enjoy it though smile

So I was in Vegas when I read this here; couldn't be bothered to stop hitting the streets to download and listen, and when I saw that it was sung by "3rd Eye Girl", i rolled my eyes and thought this would be the first song I didn't buy. Listened to a snippet whilst in the bathroom getting ready to go out via youtube, didn't like what I heard.

Got to the airport today, decided to give it a listen in it's entirety, and fuck me. I really like this song. I like the unpolished sound they have going on right now. This is the only song I've been playing over and over besides Breakfast in Bed. Something about it is simply fun and heartfelt.

This song could be on a Mandy moore album or a song from Disney Channel's Hannah Montana. It just doesn't seem sincere & that is the problem. I get what they are trying to do but the title is a desperate lure to cater to a youthful audience.

The real test for Prince fans is, try to think if you would care about this song if Prince had NO involvement & you heard this? This trio needs to do better for a first impression unless the goal is to get a younger audience, it won't work w/out the proper producers & studio team not to mention marketing team.

To put it bluntly: For Prince fans who want to connect w/ others to get excited about Prince, this isn't really even worth mentioning. The videos dosed out the hype, now they have to deliver. This isn't a good debut single for the trio, however I think it is a good exercise for the band to find their sound. But you don't want to go down the corny path w/ a acronym song "L.O.L." I refuse to just be part of the "Get Along Gang" of Prince.org that signs off on everything Prince does.

Let me put it to everyone reading on this thread? Do you think Prince would listen to this in his car driving around MPLS? FOH w/ that bullshit. Prince is trying to reach the teenage demographic again. Maybe a dubstep remix w/ Skrillex will do it, lol

It bothers me when people consider some songs as "simpleton" type diddys. Sometimes sayin "it's cold out here" is better than sayin' "the temperature is quite frigid at this locale". Not to say that simpleton diddys don't exist....but this ain't one of 'em. People complain and say prince can do better...expect that every song should be the next gift of the gods. Like prince has forgotten how to write a complicated, intricate, intense piece. I'm sure that Emeral Lagasse makes a simple ham sandwich every now and then. Don't mean he forgot to or won't ever make shrimp etoufe again. Sometimes a ham sandwich is just what u want....I'm sure emeril's ham sandwiches r damn good.

IMO...this is a damn good ham sandwich. The guitar work seems like it tom' b simple cuzza the opening riff....but that gee-tar b wurk be flying around like an eagle flying for the sake of flying. The phrasing in the chorus is great as well...it has that drop off at the end that sends u off the cliff. I love that kinda shit.

And as for people bitching about the lyrics...if just read as a poem....yes...it sounds weak....but in conjunction with the tone of the song and the delivery of the vocals, u have a very complimentary situation.

I don't know if this is good or bad....but it very well could be a No Doubt outtake.

It isn't good enough to hype as the coming of a great new band, that's the bottom line. No matter how many times it is echoed on this board, this song will be remembered as filler in the same way that "Guitar" is remembered. But for a free song for handing it out to prince fans, I guess it will tap your toes for a few moments.

This song is a desperate attempt just like Guitar is. Everything from the title to the lyrics to the riff, get it? the riff gets louder? You know what it reminds me of? Christian groups that try to pander to an audience w/ their records, it becomes painfully obvious.

If this was 1992, Prince would put these girls in Flanel w/ no shame what so ever. I can almost see the pitch.

Prince in Warner Brothers Office in 1992:

Prince: I have a great idea for a girl group, you ready?

WB: Well, we'd like to talk about your next record..

Prince: No, no, I have the next hit girl group,

WB: We still need to work what we are going to do w/ Carmen Electra. We don't like the single & we have our doubts in her as a solo artist.

Prince: Forget that girl! Send her to Mtv or something...now listen

WB: Okay, let's move this a long. We have a meeting w/ oh you might know her? Madonna

Prince: Yea, she koo. I got a girl group and man, are they kicking!

WB: What do you like about em so much?

Prince: Okay first off, we got a blond girl & she's the drummer, she can bring it!

WB: ..........:Boardroom Drinking water & not impressed)

Prince: The guitarist she has her head shaved to the side & she has a real punk look, like she is about to kick some ass!

WB: We get the idea, what is the name?

Prince: Now get this, there are three girls in the group

WB: Right.......

Prince: So that equals= 3rd Eye Girl

WB: You expect us to sign up on this?

Prince : I paid for the flanel! We are all ready to go

WB: Prince, if we may speak candidly here.

Prince: When can we roll out the album, right?

WB: No, we aren't rolling out a album.

Prince: But these girls got it!

WB: Let's go through the list shall we:

Prince: Sheila E, The Time, Vanity 6!

WB: That was the early eighties! how about

Dale Bozzio,Madhouse,Mavis Staples,George Clinton,Three O Clock,Ingrid Chavez

Prince: That's the past, 3rd eye Girl is the future!

WB: I assume you have a press kit

Prince: Check these out,the drummer is wearing a owl hat on her head, kids are going to love her

WB: Prince, we aren't signing on this one.

Prince: Well, I'm going to put out!

WB: Great, good luck w/ that, as always it has been a pleasure

Prince: This group is the future, y'all gonna see! :points his cane to the boardroom:

3 months later, Prince breaks it to the future girl group that the record isn't happening & breaks up a relationship w/ the guitarist. Cut to 2013: 3rd Eye Girl concept is reborn in 2013 all new group of girls...w/ no flanel. lol

Okay, I'm a bit confused here. I'm reading everyone "high fiving" and "hugging" and thanking this EyeJester guy, but for what? For passing on what was given to him? If it wasn't him, it would've been some other "Prince can do no wrong" fan. Did he help record or master this record?

Prince's people contacted him from seeing him gush all over him, no matter how bad the record is. And because Prince's wants everyone to fawn over him, he picked him to post this one thing on the org (and wherever else). Anyone could've posted videos saying how much they LOVE Prince over and over and he would've picked one of them. It may have been a "cool" experience for him, but what are you guys licking his balls for? lol

On top of this, Eye, are you even getting paid for "doing the work"?

As far as the song itself, standard boring fare. Nothing exciting AT ALL. Same little guitar licks and lines he's been having in his music for years now (earliest I can remember off the top of my head would be "Guitar").

Leave off Jester! Don't be so bitter and twisted. Just because he was entrusted this song there's no need to take it out on him!

I think it was a good decision for him to get it...because he is a humble and a genuine fan who is not arrogant nor sycophantic (ass-kissing). He has a genuine love and respect for Prince's music. He has been creating those insightful and interesting videos for months now and he does not overreact if someone happens to disagree with a point he has made....he is respectful.

That rules out about 80% of the other 'lovers' on here....who claim knowledge of Prince's workings but who are very boastful and arrogant and if they had been given this gift it would have made them worse....they know who they are.

By contrast, Jester is still being humble and polite and has not let this go to his head, which proves to us all the right decision was made to bring him on board. Here's hoping he gets a free trip to Paisley Park or something, good on him.

I really appreciate this post! smile Don't make a dude go all the way to tears now! Haha

It means a lot! Just something that encouraged me, and I thank you for being so positive! It means a lot to me. I'm not some sort of celebrity or insider. Just somebody that for whatever reason, was used to bring this to you all as a 'trailer' if you will.,,to what comes next! smile I respect everyone for all of the sincerity and discussion of this song! It's quite a pleasure, and one of the resons I love the org. The trolls, long-timers, and all. It's all cool and makes my heart sing! SO thank you!

I've tried listening some more. Annie (wife), thought it may be a grower but didn't like it on first listen. She did say she probably didn't like Pat Benatar when she first heard her either. She also asked if it was a demo, laughed that I'd paid for it and said it wasn't a patch on Bellowhead's new song which she keeps humming.

I, on the other hand, also am not enjoying it. Bit pissed off I paid money for it tbh. What next, iTunes purchases for Taylor Swift and One Direction? sad Perhaps I can group them under "Waste of Money".

Your opinion is respected.

So in other words you see a contrast between the lyrics and the music behind the lyrics, which you apparently feel doesn't blend well. Maybe you expect the music to be a bit, more, toned down, rather than the energetic feel it has?

I actually think it's a good contrast though, because the energetic feel of the music, promotes the inspiration behind the message of the lyrics; allowing you to feel the soul and the energy the music gives to the lyrics.

From the beginning of the song, the lyrics seem to border on someone who has chosen to stay on 'higher ground', and encouraging others to do the same. It's like the individual is embracing and sharing that feeling, by inspiring others to own the same. It sends several messages, that I believe many can relate to. For example: To embrace/accept who you are and not be afraid to show it, regardless of others' depiction of you;to look above and beyond negativity, by staying on higher ground, and also, to not be afraid to speak out/voice your opinion, (i.e., on societal issues), despite the feedback/consequences you may experience, etc.

I do feel it's a song for a younger audience, but while listening to it, I find that the energy of the music behind the lyrics, presents a very, positive and inspirational message.

I think what Thetan finds is a contrast between the quality of the lyrics-- they are dire, which I think means here that they are terrible/poor/not worth being written (depending on just how bad she thinks they are)--and the quality of the music, which Thetan has said is good. It's got nothing to do with a contrast in tone or energy or style, necessarily. Thetan thinks the words are bad, the music is good. That's the opposition: Thetan in summary--Lyrics Bad; Music Good.

Oh, Thetan also earlier referred to Prince's contributions to the Third Eye site as being "superior" to "L.O.L." so Thetan didn't understand why "L.O.L" was getting so much promotion; you responded with confusion, referring to "L.O.L."'s music as a Prince contribution. True enough, but I think Thetan meant the "Prince" songs (i.e., ones with him as vocalist) that had thus far been released on 3rdEyeGirl.com which were "better" than "L.O.L." but seemed to not be getting as much promotion.

I have no strong feelings about this at all, it just seemed like you guys were sort of missing each other points. If I'm wrong--sorry for getting involved.

That's pretty much it, Eddie, thank you smile

2elijah and I will agree to disagree about the lyrics.

[Edited 2/23/13 23:00pm]

Agreed. I was thinking Hannah Montana or some sort of 'High School Musical' myself.

I think what you mentioned about the song seeming contrived is also what bothers me so much. I don't want to see my favourite musical polymath desperately trying to appeal to the youth market. I want to hear something genuine and sincere.

I'm aware Prince didn't write the lyrics, but he has evidently 'approved' them. Compare the cliched, pop-psychology of 'LOL' to genuinely socially aware/heartfelt songs such as 'Sign O Times', 'The Love We Make', 'Dance On', 'Anna Stesia' etc. Or songs such as 'Love Thy Will Be Done' or the recent 'Long Gone' (from Allo's album) given to other artists.

I wouldn't play this to get others excited about Prince because I won't be playing it myself. It's an embarassment and actively detracts from Prince's musical skills and genius. It pains me to write this after so many years of loving Prince but I genuinely think it is one of the worst things he's ever been involved in. And yes, I do mean worse than 'Jughead'.
