I think a lot of folks are expecting Steely Dan-like music precision here.
Someone above just mentioned ONA was one of his fav eras due to the expert musicians used.
If anything that's what got me sick of Prince..how everything in the last decade was prisitne and almost sterile sounding.
As if Paisley Park had been scrubbed down to a decontamination zone. Thats what a lot of the production sounded like. What I felt it needed for some kick was some rawness to it. TRC, Musicology, 3121, Planet Urf, and LF all suffered frm this percision playing and too clean production.
This shit he is doing now, regardless of what yall say about the songwriting, is right on the money. Even if ya dont like the songs, credit is due to the strippped down less produced sound..Im mainly talking Screwdriver, Girl, LOL.
I like the live feel and immediate rush to release of the projects so there is little over production and less instrumental precision.
He's doing what we asked for..he's doing DIY, almost Exile On Main Street..yall who want perfection need to go put on Aja and quit trippin'

One of the worst pieces of shit i have EVER heard from the Prince camp.
I am usually very positive when it comes to Prince, but his work as of late has produced some all time low degrades.
I just can't believe this is the same genius that blew me away for years consistently, even up until recent times.
This year he may aim to be very active, but if this is what he's active with, i'm going to be so embarrassed for him.
"chill out and let the music move your hips" he says.....in other words, he's making "fun" music and we should embrace it that way....but wasn't Housequake, DMSR, Sexy MF, Days O Wild, Black Sweat, Le Grind and the lark made in the same manner?
This stuff is degrading. This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

Coulda just posted that. We've all got our own tastes and opinions, thank fuck. None of the stuff I've heard from him in a while is a touch on what he's done before. This stuff's nowhere near the money. Have a listen to the worst songs on the classic albums. They shit on this stuff before breakfast, which can wait of course.

it's a cute tune. took it too personal when i first heard it . 88 cents is becoming too much for me without p on lead vocals. very listenable. could not bare a full album with this. please don't even think about it. [Edited 2/23/13 12:59pm] For all time I am with you, you are with me.

My point is that I find the lyrics as written by Liv Warfield to be utterly dire, as opposed to the music written by Prince. I find the lyrics problematic, so obviously I'm going to have an interest in who is responsible for them. In this case, that's Liv Warfield, thus the comment.
I'm usually very positive about Prince's music and have loved all his recent releases but this leaves me cold. It's cringe-inducingly corny and embarassing. Why an exponentially talented musical genius such as Prince would involve himself with such cliched, MOR, pop/rock lite teen dirge is beyond me. He's capable of so much more.
Prince proved with Andy Allo's 'Superconductor' (minus the title track) that he can still guide and produce solid albums and great songs for other artists, but 'LOL' is not one of them. Nor is it a direction I would expect or desire a mature, multifaceted musical legend to be moving in.

what you said makes no sense. I'm simply asking those who "love" the song, if you take LOL at face value (AKA if Prince had nothing to do with the song) would you still find it to be a great tune? Why I ask this is because I think a good portion of the orgers who "love" this tune are making themselves love it, out of "Being grateful to Prince" (whatever the fuck that means) with his new music, direction, etc. basically all this love for some of these new songs is not genuine, it's forced IMO.

I like it. The lyrics kinda not all that much, but the droning guitar arrangements are interesting and kinda surprised me from Prince. I can see how people who only listen to certain types of music would not appreciate it because of its alterna-rock feel. I give it 3 stars out of 5. Change it one more time..

I forgot to mention that I think Hanna was an effin great voice. Better than some Prince ex's and proteges whose names shall be mentioned. Good find Prince! Change it one more time..

I'm liking the new stuff, but I agree with others about the band. Watch the Screwdriver video.
Miss Hannah is a very simple drummer, and hasn't done anything to blow me away. I think it's cool that she likes John Bonham. Bonham had such a distict, open, and improvisal style. Not hearing this from her.
Miss Donna's performance in Screwdriver seems very generic rather than organic or original. She's awesome, but like Hannah, hasn't done anything for me to say... Wow!
Ida is a kick ass bassist! Enough said.
One of the things I love about Prince is he has an open, improv style on guitar. One of my favorite solo's from him is on Shhh, especially the performance from The Grand Journal when he was in France. Its been deleted from Youtube... *sad* I could watch that everyday, multiple times. Just amazing. When he plays, each performance is different. He sticks to the structure of an original solo, but deviates on each performance in ways that make it organic.
Fact is, Donna and Hannah are young but very talented. I'm sure they will deliver something to make us gawk at some point.

Everyone complained about Allo at first and I think overall she won cred with SuperConductor. People on here like to judge fast. We need to wait and see. currently my favorite song to listen to. been on repeat for the last hour. it is not musicaly out of this world, but its the content and vibe that brings a litteral smile to my face.

It's a pretty good song, especially the beginning of each verse. But I would have prefered that the guitar sound had been slightly less intense and dominating.

This song just doesn't send me to where I want to go... But, I am open to hearing more in the case the other songs do...

Your opinion is respected.
So in other words, you see a contrast between the lyrics and the music behind the lyrics, which you apparently feel doesn't blend well. Maybe you expect the music to be a bit, more toned down, rather than the energetic feel it has?
I actually think it's a good contrast though, because the energetic feel of the music, promotes the inspiration behind the message of the lyrics; allowing you to feel the soul and the energy the music gives to the lyrics.
From the beginning of the song, the lyrics seem to border on someone who has chosen to stay on 'higher ground', (just based on the first few lines of the song), and is embracing and sharing that feeling, by inspiring and encouraging others to own the same. The lyrics seem to send several messages, that I believe many can relate to. For example: To embrace/accept who you are and not be afraid to show it, regardless of others' depiction of you;to look above and beyond negativity, by staying on higher ground, and also, to not be afraid to speak out/voice your opinion, (i.e., on societal issues), despite the feedback/consequences you may experience, etc.
I do feel it's a song for a younger audience, but while listening to it, I find that the energy of the music behind the lyrics, presents a very, positive and inspirational message.

Well Said. I totally agree. Superconductor is one of my favorite discs at the moment. We are all just a little spoiled with the class A musicians Prince surrounds himself with.

I think what Thetan finds is a contrast between the quality of the lyrics-- they are dire, which I think means here that they are terrible/poor/not worth being written (depending on just how bad she thinks they are)--and the quality of the music, which Thetan has said is good. It's got nothing to do with a contrast in tone or energy or style, necessarily. Thetan thinks the words are bad, the music is good. That's the opposition: Thetan in summary--Lyrics Bad; Music Good.
Oh, Thetan also earlier referred to Prince's contributions to the Third Eye site as being "superior" to "L.O.L." so Thetan didn't understand why "L.O.L" was getting so much promotion; you responded with confusion, referring to "L.O.L."'s music as a Prince contribution. True enough, but I think Thetan meant the "Prince" songs (i.e., ones with him as vocalist) that had thus far been released on 3rdEyeGirl.com which were "better" than "L.O.L." but seemed to not be getting as much promotion.
I have no strong feelings about this at all, it just seemed like you guys were sort of missing each other points. If I'm wrong--sorry for getting involved.

I like it. It's the 1st song out of the current batch I've wanted to replay immediately. It reminds me of something I've heard before, not by Prince, but I can't figure out what. Is it "1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins?

(Bolded part) You apparently have an interest in the matter because you brought up a comment I made in another thread, into this communication. No disrespect, but there was no confusion to my other comment. My comment about Prince contributing to L.O.L. was based on his vocals in the song. That is what I was referring to, so we can leave that comment in that other thread, and leave it out of this conversation.
As I stated to Thetan, I respect her opinion, and as far as 'Thetan' referring to the lyrics in L.O.L as 'dire', I took her opinion of it, different than what you expressed. Thanks for your input though, quite nice of you, but no referee needed because there's no argument here.

I'm gonna love hating this. Maybe cos I'm a loverhaterpotatamaka? I may well be but there's no need to call us names or tell us what to do, or to stop doing, or even when to start. Bleedin cheek of it. What time do we start in the mornings and what way do we face our blankets?
Hope the poor potato gets some sleep soon. I'm gonna watch that again cos I'm sure there was some kinda subliminal message about some cabbage and a three eyed snorkel somewhere. I'll prolly hate it? Maybe there's a key to it all? If only there was a clue.
