Folks don't wanna pay money to see it on Spotify or at least sign the free trial (I think). Prince is everywhere. Fuck a YouTube. I thought YouTube was about to die according to TVD (well I didn't believe it) lol

I think youtube is very useful, but I'm just not convinced that the youth will actually purchase his stuff. Maybe his die hard and long time fans but not these kids.

vainandy said: If he never released any new music anymore, I could care less. I still buy all his new releases but I don't get excited in the least anymore and sit and count the days until it's released like I used to because I know before I even buy it that it's only going to be decent and not absolutely great. I don't see it as Prince's fault either because looking at the music scene in general of the last 20 years, there's nothing out there to inspire him to record something great. It's hard to just completely 100% tune out the current music scene and not be exposed to it in even the slightest way because it's all over the TV, in the commercials, coming from passing cars on the street, and even on this very website. A totally great album from Prince would sound like he's never even had a hint of exposure to current music and on every recent album, there's always things coming up in songs and even in whole tracks like "Incense and Candles" and "Laydown" that it is either influencing his sound, or he's selling out trying to gain new listeners who are into that type of bullshit. The only way I'd get fully excited about a new Prince album coming out is if he were releasing something old from the vault that was recorded years before any of the current music was even thought of being invented.
Then there's also the way you buy music these days that's no longer exciting. All the actual "record stores" have now closed and there's nothing left but bullshit places like Best Buy, Target, etc. that never really carried a variety of music in the first place. Plus, I hate giving my money to monopolies like these if I can avoid it. It's getting to the point that if you want a new album, you have to order it from the internet. Well, when you do that, you don't get it instantly, you have to wait for it to come in the mail. Now they are selling downloads over the internet these days which is rediculous because if you're going to download something, you might as well do a little digging and find it for free and save your money because you're not going to have a physical copy whether you pay for it or not if you go the download route.
So no, it's not the same at all. The thrill is gone and I don't see it as Prince's fault but rather the music industry's fault. Interesting post. It seems in some ways you are saying to the extent that Prince is a pop musician and part of the music industry, he is over because the whole industry is over. I see this point. I often wonder though, whether it's just because I am "older" and nostalgic about the past music and culture being "better," and I'm just being a luddite. But then I see 9 year olds singing "Call Me Maybe" and college campuses playing Miley Cyrus, and I think that when I was growing up, music (and the experience of music) was so much more exciting. It was the feeling that It was a world meant for people older than me, so being a part of it made me feel special and that I was learning about a world of adult experiences and feelings (that I wasnt supposed to). When I was 9, I was sneaking a listen of "Erotic City," and sneaking out of church on Saturdays to go to the record store with my older brother and his teen friends, seeing Lovesexy posters in the store, browsing and finding all kinds of great music that was curated in some way by the store, it's workers, and radio. It was exciting. And the artists were all so different and wrote about a variety of things, sometimes poetic, very personal, and using metaphors. And experimenting. It was all very iconoclast, even subversive, in the way that rock n roll ought to be. It doesn't seem to be that exciting anymore in general.

Do you have shares in YouTube cause you're pushing them very hard. Do they have music videos? Yes. Do those music videos encompass an artist entire musical history? No, they show their hits(or single choices) for the most part. They wouldn't know from watching legitimately posted videos anything of an artists background. It's not like the videos are accompanied by backstories. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Note on Spotify - I have it for free (didn't upgrade to paid) and I love it. You don't have to pay if you don't mind an ad once in a while (I just turn down my speakers then). Not everything P is on there, but there's tons of other music, including quite a lot of P music.
Btw, I remember this thread in Non-Prince Music about how much artists make on things like plays on Spotify: http://prince.org/msg/8/383089 so while I as the consumer/listener enjoy Spotify, I see that all these digital media ain't good for the artist. For so many artists nowadays, it's "ova" before it even began!

Tony, I completely agree with you. The guy who was leading music distribution on the Internet way back in the mid 90s has now decided to do his best to steer clear. While I see Prince's point as the value of music has been totally destroyed, there's no stopping this new approach to getting music 'out there'. However, it's harder for older folks to re-adjust It is a bit sad to see 'the train pulling into the station' so to speak. While the last who knows how many records have essentially been Prince by the numbers, Prince is too sneaky and clever to not put out something that blows our minds. He used to hit home runs every at bat - these days he still hits them but not nearly as frequently. J [Edited 9/3/12 7:23am]

"OVA" ?
Are you 12 years old ? | |

No he didn't. He did what he liked most and that's making music and he made millions with it. Not saying he didn't work hard but he really didn't give 30 years of his life. The man has a pretty amazing life.

There's this thing about to go down later this month in Chicago. A concert, I think. By some dude named Prince. Doesn't sound like "OVA" to me. Still booking arenas without the absolutely positively necessary backing of YouTube!

Thank you for this post. I'm grateful that I'm not that dedicated and invested into a musician or artist. As much as I love Prince and other artists, they are human. Live and let live. If he wants to record and release an album, so be it. If not, that's his choice and his right.

When someone who's net worth is over $250 million, do you really think he cares about being successful, appealing to another generation or lesser so... produciing material for fodder on this and other decaying Prince fan sites?
Let the man be an old man and rant about stuff (see "The Internet Is Dead")...
He's now a novelty act, - get over it, because U people (myself included even though I missed his concert essentially in my back garden last year).. will still drink the kool-aid and buy tickets to his concerts (if you knew for a fact they were gonna happen)...
I'll admit, I ain't a fan of some of his recent behaviour nor output for that mattter since "Planet Earth" (or "Earth Song 2" as I like to call it)... but frankly, if he's giving out albums of that quality for free... he's obviously reading from the book of DILLIGAF...

Well if Prince were to do the equivalent of MJ's Planet Earth (PLEASE refrain from reporting this comment people) - Planet Earth wouled probably be it IMHO.

outside of the word earth I never thought of any correlation. it's a weak song, I thought it was one of the weakest he's ever released.

like "saviour" on emancipation sounds as if it's a bad outtake from the come/gold era, "planet earth" sounds as if it's a bad outtake from the "saviour" sessions.
