Prince is.......OVA.

There was a time when I was fully on board with the stuff that Prince does regarding his career. After all..........it is his journey. That said, I truly believe that Prince has been successful in killing or severly limiting what remains of his career from a record releasing standpoint. I won't rehash what we already know, but his current stance on the internet, youtube, distribution methods, and religion have all contributed 2 destroying (my opinion) what was a fantastic career.

I am sad 2 see this day come....................but it is here.

I must say that I was concerned about him releasing new material just months after '20ten' was released. When I aired my concern on this site, I was flamed for even having this concern, which was based on my feeling that he's essentially given up releasing new music, and may have difficulty in finding distribution if he did wish to release something.

But in the words of Teddy Riley... "The party ain't over"

As far as YouTube goes, I really don't care about that.

I actually applaud his stance on iTunes... I don't want mp3s, nor any digital file (even if it's WAV).

However, I still have this feeling that he may be working on his own distribution, which would be challenging and costly, but it could be done fairly easily if he has decided to give up on brick and mortar distribution... Set up a site and allow folks to order physical (and possibly digital) copies.

A part of the game, I believe, is 2 get the Masters back (if he hasn't already) and then do something major that has never been done before. My concern is that it will be 2 late and he would have lost his audience by the time this happens.

I don't know if Prince would agree with that, he's making more money than he was in the past, and he's recording as much and whatever he wants to and making all kinds of short films and videos.

Of course he's keeping it to himself. He's going more in the real artist direction as opposed to a pop star.

he's older now, and i just don't think he cares about success anymore. he's pretty much done everything already, won awards already. now at his age he might just want to do what he wants and have fun. if he isn't worried about it. i sure ain't gonna worry. if he never records a new album again, it's okay by me, because i still have everything else he's done.

and after he is gone one day i'm sure the vault will find it's way open.

You definitely have some valid points Gray, but I can't say that I agree with you that he's "ova". I still believe he has something left to give us. Not sure what that is or when that will happen, but I'm sure we haven't seen the last of his greatness. I can only hope he's gearing up for something great in the next few years. Perhaps, he will remaster his music or make a great concert video/documentary. I don't care about hit songs, but I would love to see him do something with his legacy.

Helping Andy, Bria etc, etc is a waste of time IMO. I will never buy their cd's and they barely have any talent worth paying attention to. I wonder when he will understand this?? I couldn't care less about all his proteges but he acts as though we should and are missing something if we don't. Most of us just want him and his music.

Anyway, by 2 cents. smile

Yep.

On this same note, he's been a workaholic for the last 30+ years. I love the fact he's put out nearly one album a year since 1978 - and far more if you count related artists and b-sides. But the man is more mature now, and it's his right to take a break from recording and protect his artwork from the likes of youtube. Keep in mind it's only been two years since 20Ten, but to Prince fans it feels like a decade.

Yes, agree.

He should do whatever he wants and not to be harsh, but I think he is at a point he's not going to release any better stuff than the stuff that's already in the vault.

What i don't understand is when he's not worried about stuff and wants to do what he wants, why does he take away he's video's on YT? Why does he care?

As we know Prince is a very smart man and before he releases anything new he probably wants to make sure of the best way for it to be distributed so he can be paid fairly for his work. (IMO)

Prince is freaked out/frustrated with the current system. He will want a nice sum of money for whatever he chooses to release next (if he does) because he knows once an album is released, it is game on for illegal downloading. There is not much money to be made in CD sales anymore, hence the alternative ways he has released the last few studio albums where he got a nice payday up front for 'free' newspaper releases and the like.

I don't think Prince trusts the system anymore and any new studio release will only happen if he gets a deal that gives him a nice sum of cash up front.

I understand this, but in a way it's sad....it's so far away from the "Free the music" idea.

he makes so much money off his tours these days that even the money he gets up front

if he chooses to make a deal with a newspaper (that was 5 million up front, no?) is gonna

be peanuts compared to the tour income.

so then why not, if you'r an artist and you write music every day and have tons and tons

of stuff in your vault, why then, would you not just set up a site and release it yourself?

digital formats with the option of buying a cd for some of the more 'major' releases you

put out.

that costs hardly anything to achieve if you have your own studio complex and your own

website. indie bands without a deal and without money do it all the time.

a multi millionaire like prince would not be able to do that very thing? please, come on. confused

he also knows that he has roughly 300,000 (if i make a very low estimate) of fans all round

the world who will buy whatever he releases and are eagerly awaiting new product. be it an

album of vault tracks, a new studio album or a live document.

if and when he releases an album he always breaks even, even in the current model. heck,

he probably makes a million or 2.

going to completely independent route through a website would generate even more cash

since there are no more 'gatekeepers' or whatever blabla prince likes to moan about.

so then why not?

as an artist, if you know that you still have the drive to record and to create, and you know

that you have at least a quarter of a million people worldwide who are interested to hear it,

or even totally psyched to hear it, why then would you stop releasing new music?

it makes no sense. it can't be about a few million bucks. as we all know, he makes so much

from touring that 2 or 3 million dollars from a new albums' sales is hardly worth that kind of

thought going into it.

so maybe he feels that his music is wasted now that there aren't millions of people out there

who want to hear it? once again, there are enough people out there, not millions, no and not

even 1 million anymore i'd guess. but so what. 250,000 people is enough, right? jeez.

assuming that isn't the reason either, than what else could be the reason?

maybe he's just taking his time, planning his remasters, going through the vault, getting his

shit together to finally spend enough time and effort on his back catalogue and give it the

treatment it deserves.

in a world where obscure 80s 1 hit wonders are re-issuing albums with bonus tracks, it is a

crime that there are still no prince extended remasters. an absolute crime.

so before i just throw my hands up and go 'oh fuck it, i give up', i'm just gonna hold on a bit

longer and kind of keep telling myself that prince will come through one day and finally just

release those remastered/extended albums, finally set up that website where he will put up

all his music, every album, every protege album, every single, remix, non album and single

track etc. a solid base, built on the foundation of his WB prime material, all the way through

his indi releases and his co-op albums.

because at the end of the day, that's what almost all of us want, isn't it? a new album right

now is gonna be nice, but it will be only something of a comforting diversion.

you don't keep adding extensions to your house when the foundation is slowly starting to

fall apart of when your basement is leaky and full of water.

fix everything, preserve it, catalogue it and make it available. then add to that whatever you

feel you want to and whenever you want to.

it's the only way he'll demand the attention once again that his carreer deserves.

releasing albums that are out of print the minute today's newspaper is sold out, is not the

way to build a legacy.

Andy Allo's album which prince is involed in dosen't count? they will be probably be touring for the

album as well.. Maybe he wants to take his time and let his proteges release their stuff before his this time around....

I gather the man has to take breaks, especially since the man has basically been off-and-on tours since 2008 through the early 2012. I don't mean like the Musicology tour, but he has been doing quite a number of live shows since after the Musicology tour. I think it is good that he is helping new artists and collaborating with them as well.

We all remember the same occured before The Rainbow Children came out. A long period of nothing then an album which was hugely put down. Now it's classed by some as a classic. There will be another prince album, he is probably perfecting it right now! No evidence, just historic observation. He is not over yet

I guess with so much stolen music on the internet, it's hard for many artists today to make a profit from it, although the internet is a fast way for artists to get exposure/rrecognition, and good for self-promotion, but as far as making a profit, with so many fans stealing their music, well, it may be difficult for them to stop that, with youtube and other sites being free and accessible. I'm wondering if youtube will charge a fee down the road to access their site. Even if that was to happen, it still won't stop fans from stealing music.

I think u can still be a fan of someone even if they don't have an album out at the moment. U can be a fan of their previous work & come onto the forums to discuss their past albums or their personal lives. Lots of ppl are still big fans of MJ & we all know he's definitely gone.
I will never think that Prince is "ova" because he continues to tour or perform at various events so it's still exciting plus the music he's put out is so great that it'll keep me going forever.

Don't know if you saw him at a gig last year, but he looked nothing like ova. If Prince will be ova, then he'll be ova on stage, just like that. Bang, and he's gone.
