This is not exactly the same situation, but it's similiar....
Maurice White is the longtime leader of Earth Wind and Fire, but due to health problems,he no longer tours with them. However,he allows them to use the "Earth Wind and Fire" name, which he owns. The Earth Wind & Fire that performs nowadays features only three originals (Philip, Verdine and Ralph). They use the name on lease which they renew every year with Maurice White (who owns the name Earth, Wind & Fire).
Maurice could have been a prick and told the other guys "I own the name, you find another name to call yourselves!" in which case the band would probably have to choose a name like 'The Elements'.But no,he allows them to use the name and everyone is happy.

The difference is that many members contributed to the EWF albums. Verdine and Maurice actually formed the group, and Verdine still tours with EWF. Big difference from The Time, which was essentially created by Prince. 90% of all the written and played material on their albums was created by Prince.
Not saying I totally agree with P's move, but you can't compare this with EWF.

I did not read all 16 pages on the topic, so maybe this question has already been asked; Before getting so upset could it ever occur to you that this is all just nonsense????
Lots of negativity might b spread for no reason at all..... sigh....

Ok, well, doesn't interest me enough to read everything that's being said so I'll let others do the posting in that case...

The negativity is real. The Time isn't happy with Prince for not allowing them to use the name. But there's two schools of thought:
1) Prince owns the name, created and developed the band and their music and should have legal rights and/or control over what music is released under that name.
2) These guys are what..in their late 50s??, and have been friends and/or collegues of Prince's for over 30 years. At this stage of their career and lives, it certainly seems like it would be a simple gesture for Prince to allow them to use the name and enjoy any kind of success they can. This isn't a band that is going to sell a million records, or tour together for the next decade, nor would they ruin his "brand", as they're all seasoned professionals and respected musicians.
It's rumored that Prince contributed guitar parts on a song or two when they were working on the "old dogs new tricks" sessions several years ago, and also gave Jimmy his blessing to do what he wanted with the Time around 2005 or 2006. But he clearly changed his mind. If it breaks when it bends, you better not put it in.

Why would you even post anything if it didn't interest you? GTFO and go mumble some nonsense in another thread.

Besides some legal stuff I guess this is a good reason! Years ago some of the original band members didn´t want to perform under Morris´name...ego´s I don´t think Prince really cares about the name...only for legal reasons maybe. [Edited 10/5/11 11:01am] Love4oneanother

anthonyspeaks said: I think everybody is kinda in the dark about the depth of the business aspects involved. Prince may own the name but does Warner Bros. have ownership or control elsewhere. Everybody jumped on Prince when it was rumored that he was tryin to mess with FDeluxe but soon after that whole story/ situation broke things got real quiet and we haven't heard anything since and they have some live shows in the works. Prince was a guest on Tavis Smiley a while back and stated that he was in the process of receiving full ownership of some of his masters because the contracts were expiring. He also said he was still attempting to track down money owed to him from Purple Rain and explained how Warner had made money overseas that never found it's way back to him. These things tell me that the business is kinda involved and sometimes complex and Prince is more in tune with his business these days. Before we criticize we need to hear both sides of the story and Tom Joyner is kinda janky, if ya ask me so i don't put much weight on shit he says. As for The Time and it's conception. Andre Cymone played a major role in the conceptualization of it, as far as wanting Morris' persona to mirror that of Kid Creole. Prince was about the music Everyone seems to focus on Pandemonium and Prince's tracks. Let me please remind a few of you that the first eponymous titled cd was just Prince, Lisa, Dr. Fink Dez and Morris Day with Morris also playing drums. There wasn't Jam, Lewis, Moir or anyone else that we know as the time. He'll you can hear Prince's voice. The second cd What time is it was Prince and Day again as well as Dez and now Vanity. Have we forgotten how funky the bass for 777-9311 is? Again that's Prince. Pandemonium is the only cd in which the members in question really contributed. And of course Prince's are the weaker ones. He doesn't want to give away hits that will be listed as being created by The Time. His ego cant handle that.
