Judging by the group's new name and the name of the album, Prince had the right idea. disbelief

Oh wow. So glad that this is finally coming together, but my God! That 30-second sample of trending was God awful. Is this what they think the Minneapolis Sound sounds like in 2011? I still have hope for the other tracks, but this first single isn't gonna convince anyone who's on the fence to buy something from this "new" adult band called "The Original 7ven". lol

Can't wait til Oct. 18th, though!

On 8/17/2011 Per: The (TJMS) "Tom Joyner Morning Show " it was reported that Morris Day along with all the other original members of The Time, including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Have all written and recorded new material for a new Time release. But, as Billy Sparks once put it -'There's just one problem though'-. The Kid .aka. the artist formally known as .bka. Prince, says he owns the rights and copyrights to The Time. In other words if they want to release any new material they better come up with a new name! Come on Prince 30 years later and u still have a grudge? This Band was know doubt one of Prince's most successful side projects ever and now u abort them?

I haven't read all of the thread yet, so this may have been mentioned already. We don't understand all the ins & outs of his copyrights, publishing rights, masters ownerships, etc.. He probably has valid, legal reasons to keep ownership of the name.

Not to mention the fact that there would be no The Time, as we know them, without Prince and HIS songs.

It's like asking George Lucas to let Mark Hamill go out and make a movie on his own using the Star Wars name, music, imagery. lol

That is what I was thinking too.

I wish people would not go and get all creative with names. Prince doesn't own the name Morris Day and there may be some people who lost track of what Mr Day is up to that would pick there heads up if they heard his name but are not goingt to respond to the name "original 7". I get that with this new name the band can also try and go on if Morris quits too.

^ It's small fry to someone like Prince...honestly the guy needs to see them as complimentary and not as a threat....

You aren't getting my point. There are legal issues as to if you don't protect your copyrights, you can lose them. So why should he possibly give up the rights to HIS music? It isn't a matter of them being a threat, it's called business.

Are you talking to me?!? If so, just because I try to explain things logically to you, that makes me a syncophant? (which you misspelled)

You're the one getting your panties in a twist over them not being able to RECORD/SELL under the name The Time, they've toured using it haven't they?

^ No I think you'll find you've made the spelling error, I was correct.

It fits you like a glove:

Syc·o·phant

[sik-uh-fuhnt, -fant, sahy-kuh-] Show IPA
noun
a self-seeking, servile flatterer; fawning parasite.

The Band Formerly Known As “The Time” Returns With New Music! Listen Now!

The Original 7even. Promo Photo

The Original 7ven. Promo Photo

Yes! "The Time" is finally releasing new music. One problem; they are no longer called "The Time" but "The Original 7ven" instead. Hmm.

We have no idea why they are no longer going by "The Time" unless the rumors of Prince owning the name "The Time" and not letting them use it for new music they are recording.

I don't understand Prince's reasoning for it since they have been using it for the past 30 years but I guess we will get into that another time.

When I spoke to all 7 original members of "The Time"....I mean "The Original 7ven" they told me that they and Prince were cool. I mostly spoke to Morris Day and Jerome Benton, but nothing came up about the name change.

For now, "The Time"..we mean "The Original 7ven" are releasing new music for the first time in 2 decades! The CD "Condensation" comes out in October and the new song "#Trendin" comes out September 20th!

Why tag a redundant "-ven" on the end of 7? Not needed. Trying to get under Princeykins' skin clearly with the use of his favourite number and the "Formerly Known as" nod.

And what's even worse about the title of the first single is the fact that it's got the hashtag symbol in it too. Sigh... And who really thinks they're going to actually hear this on the radio (besides a one or two-time play on Tom Joyner's and Michael Baisden's shows)?

The song's alright. Nothing special or worth checking out again.

It's stuck in the 90's. The chorus's lyrics are repetitive.

For a so called comeback album, this is pretty lame.

And a twitter reference? .....what?!

I don't know...

What time is it? Your time is up!

Good for them, but the song title, and song isn't what I was expecting from them. I will hang on in, and see what else we get.

Edited to say: Trending makes me think of a title coming from a younger set. I really wasn't expecting The Time to come up with a song by that name. I'm staying optimistic in the meantime.

What worries me is that most people won't even realise it's out there. If you search 'The Time' on Amazon, it doesn't even appear....this is almost like P is trying to kill them at birth before they get a chance of success...

You're right, but let's be honest.....even if they were able to use their original name, the CD still won't sell very many copies.Nobody sells alot of CDs these days unless you're Lady Gaga or Lil 'Wayne lol That's why I don't understand why Prince was making such a big fuss about them using their original name. This project is really just a 'gift' for longtime fans who want new Time music. It's not gonna sell 10 million copies, lol.

So you don't think Prince has plans for re releasing/remastering The Times catologue which is why he's holding on to the name.

V10LETBLUES

The good news is it's not a song about MySpace or AOL. It's a catchy song.

But it will date the song pretty quickly just the same. Moms all over the world are going to be blasting this thing in between tweeting and playing farmville.
