If The Family can come up with a new name (FDeluxe),finish an album ('Gaslight') and set a release date (September),there is no reason why Morris and the guys can't do the same!

The Time should change their name to an unpronounceable symbol in protest of the slavery that their master has bestowed on them.

Oh my... C'mon Princey that's kinda low. But hey, I guess business is business. He's tryna make them play the same game as he had to do

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

I wouldn't go THAT far (for obvious marketing reasons), but "The Band Formerly Known As The Time" would sound great lol

Anyway, Terry and Jimmy can afford a trial if necessary, these dudes are probably richer than Prince (thanks to their work with Janet).

On 8/17/2011 Per: The (TJMS) "Tom Joyner Morning Show " it was reported that Morris Day along with all the other original members of The Time, including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Have all written and recorded new material for a new Time release. But, as Billy Sparks once put it -'There's just one problem though'-. The Kid .aka. the artist formally known as .bka. Prince, says he owns the rights and copyrights to The Time. In other words if they want to release any new material they better come up with a new name! Come on Prince 30 years later and u still have a grudge? This Band was know doubt one of Prince's most successful side projects ever and now u abort them?

I haven't read all of the thread yet, so this may have been mentioned already. We don't understand all the ins & outs of his copyrights, publishing rights, masters ownerships, etc.. He probably has valid, legal reasons to keep ownership of the name.

Not to mention the fact that there would be no The Time, as we know them, without Prince and HIS songs.

It's like asking George Lucas to let Mark Hamill go out and make a movie on his own using the Star Wars name, music, imagery. lol

I sure don't like that name...

"All 7" would've been better. Or "Original 7", "Original Seven", "The What", "Lifetime", "The Tempo", "The Watch", etc...

If is is good......people will acquire.

Don't be so obtuse. A band's name is important if said band has been around for decades - it's their legacy. Marketing is hugely important. We're on a site about a dude who hung out his powdered buttcheeks at his most desperate for a successful record.

The music finds it's way to those who are in the know - but for everyone outside of Prince geekdom, no triggers will be fired with 'The Original 7ven'. confused

If they have not figured out how 2 market their product after 30 years.................no one should buy this project.

No one is checking for the Time in 2011.

Everyone will have 2 be made aware that they still exist.

This is NOT rocket science.

Prince created the Time..Prince was/IS The Time to a large extent. Those first two albums are just Prince records...he wrote and recorded all the music and played most all the instruments. He just had Morris follow his vocal track on them. The third album probably wasn't much different.

Those guys are talented but he gave them their careers...or at least the start of them. Then Jam/Lewis and Jesse went on to do some great work, but that was after The Time.

Prince deserves two or three tracks on the album and a cut of the proceeds. If not, he is just giving them charity.

I couldn't agree more smile

While the Time built their reputation for being a badass on stage in studio is another story.

Jimmy Jamm,Terry Lewis while being very good producers and songwriters never wrote anything

remotely close to the :777-9311,The Stick,Get It Up,The Walk,Gigolos Get Lonley Too,Girl,Chocolate.

Prince wrote and played every instrument on these songs.

every song have characteristic epic funk bass line with great hooks.

Prince is the Time

and the Time album without Prince is not the Time.

Prince WAS the Time. These guys are all in their late 50s, and have known each other for 30 years. A few years back, Prince gave Jimmy his blessing to do whatever he wanted with the Time. Now, he changed his mind (shock). The album is done, and will be released. No issue with a record company or anything like that. They'll be creative in getting around the name trademark. It's just sad that Prince is even remotely worried about something like this after so many years. Let the original guys in the Time enjoy whatever success they can. Clearly, it's not something that is going to provide any huge financial gain. It's just something for fun.

If it breaks when it bends, you better not put it in.

^ It's funny, Prince is still acting as if they are a threat to his supremacy, 26 years later!!!! It's a bit delusional, he should bless em and move on!!

No wonder Morris said a couple of times that he was 'condensating' rather than 'sweating' while on stage. Said he was like a bottle of fine champagne just removed from the cooler. lol
