Yeah plus Prince did create The Time in the first place.

Columbia Pictures created The Monkees, and Rhino owns their rights now, but they are allowed to use the name. En Vogue, NKOTB, and many other groups were put together by someone else but they are still allowed to use their names, and didn't have to change them. It's not like The Time are an imposter Doo Wop or vocal group. lol The J5 had to change their name (that Motown registered as a trademark, but they were called "Jackson 5" before signing to Motown), but at least in their case they still used a similar name (The Jacksons), and so did Funkadelic & Parliament (P-Funk). That made them easy to find by their listeners. The Moments were in a similar situation to the J5, so they just used their own names "Ray, Goodman, & Brown".

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

besides thats exactly what Prince DID do. He was caught up with WB and changed his gat damned name to a symbol and recorded under that lol

Prince was complaining about unfair contracts not simple everyday contracts

good point, though still that would make him WB to the Time, and he seems to be as willing to be that as WB was to him

No, it's not the same, WB didn't create the music. hammer

Nah, not exactly, for reasons Serena explained already AND the folks in The Time always knew that The Time was PRINCES THING and always would be. They started out like that.

Yeah, I like 1960's music. smile I wasn't really aware of The Monkees until MTV started re-running their show and then a local channel started showing it. I heard a couple of their songs beforehand, but I didn't know they had a TV show or even what they looked like, they just a group I heard on the oldies station.

Ugh, I'm so old I used to have a poster of Peter Tork over my bed when I was little. I liked Davey too, but remember feeling sorry for Peter because everyone loved Davey so much. lol I LOVED them and the show.

Heck, I even remember Mickey in the Circus Boy movie! grandpa

Why is it so difficult for some of you to understand?

They can release any album on their own as long as it not labeled a "Time" album. Prince IS "The Time", the members were just props to begin with. Talented props, but props none the less.

If you work at Wallmart, and everyone knows you from Wallmart, do you think you can open a store called Wallmart?

C'mon people, get your outrage in order.

Does this apply to all manufactured bands, or just ones started by Prince?

I mean are the 'Spice Girls' their original producers and industry people who set up the original idea, or are they the 5 members that front the group?

We all know it's a legal issue, and who wrote what - but these people are together making music as a unit, the same unit - Prince isn't using those names, evidently has no intention to use those names - and people are saying these bands aren't so without Prince, well if Prince were to use the band name 'The Time' with a completely new lineup, well I say that's not The Time because it hasn't got Morris et all.

Technically it is a legal issue, but that legal issue goes away in the blink of an eye when people aren't being spiteful dicks.

A "New Monkees" group and TV show was created in the mid-80's, but it flopped. I think the show only lasted 3 or 4 episodes. It wasn't any good. lol

This is a legal issue. Prince would have to essentially sign the name and all rights thereof associated with the name. This would put in jeopardy the ownership status of existing material recorded under the name that Prince enjoys in perpetuity. I don't blame him one bit. There is no way I'd put that kind of loot and legacy in jeopardy.

Seems some folks don't want 2 understand this basic FACT.

question How and why would them going by 'The Time' have anything to do with the "ownership of existing material"? Don't believe this.

It's all part of one negotiation. They want to use the name for future endeavors. Prince wants to own all the existing material. So, he's saying, give me what I want and I'll give you what you want. If my teenage kid wants to borrow the car tonight and I want him to mow the lawn this afternoon, we might work out a deal even though there is no connection between the lawn and the car.

I see Princes point withholding use of "the Time" but this also shows how much of an ass he (Prince) is. Morris Day is a childhood friend. Prince could easily "lease" the use of the Time name for live performances. As well as a one time use for the release of this new cd.
