Unless that musician is Peter Gabriel, of course. A long-time collaborator with Amnesty International, Peter co-founded WITNESS, a non-profit group that equips, trains and supports locally-based organizations worldwide to use video and the internet in human rights documentation and advocacy. He also created and curretnly helps fund the peace advocacy group "The Global Elders" with Richard Branson, Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Desmund Tutu and Kofi Annan. To this day, Peter sponsors and performs at world music festivals to give a forum for little-heard international musicians and spread awareness for civil rights issues abroad.
Now THAT is a role model.

interview never took place??? now THAT is good news!!!!! hopefully, prince never said any such things

Anyone surprised by Prince's celebration and romanticizing of theocratic dictatorship has not been listening to his music in the last 10 years. Go take another listen of "The Rainbow Children" and you'll see that these sentiments are quite continuous with what he expressed then. "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

Yes, I've heard of Stephen Glass. He was fired immediately after his unethical behavior was discovered. If the person who wrote this Prince interview never actually interviewed Prince and instead made up all these quotes, that person would be fired and the Guardian would immediately issue an apology and a retraction.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The guardian might be a little boring and left wing, but its not exactly known for sloppy journalism.
Prince on the other hand, is known for being off the wall, and by the sounds of it, losing his grip on reality like never before. .

I blame Larry Graham....prince has always been ' out there ' but he definately changed for the worst since his baby died and Larry came on the scene...his natural controlling nature and hardline religion is a dangerous mix...

lol yeah poor Prince, they got him good this time

and just when i thought he was actually onto something with the us tour he had going....just another purple fool i guess well hes fucking himself over...maybe its good hes not recording another album.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It's hard to believe that he will not record another album but then again it's Prince...He is right about digital music though, it's stripped down and does not have the same sound as it would have on the album.I also pray that his comments about Islamic countries were taken out of context. Oh well I wanna be your lover!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
How I like this to be true, even if is fake I don't think that will happen. Papers and mags sell BS everyday to people and I dont think Prince is as important enough for the Guardian to lose its cred. FUNKNROLL! "February 2014, wow". 'dre.

I LOVE this interview! Makes the decision not to go to his Cologne concert SO much better! Hey loudmouth, shut the fuck up, right?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Is this the same Prince that always talked about Freedom and breaking the chain of slavery?!?!?!? And now condoning the zero choice in Islamic countries...this is insane!!
I think sometimes he says these things for publicity, like the Internet is dead comment but even so it is a misguided thing to say. [Edited 6/23/11 10:55am]

Maybe he was trying to prove how open-minded he is, by pointing out that he's a fan of rigid theocratic social control wherever it exists, not just in his own current religion.
This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's followed his career and music since TRC. But it may come as a shock to the casual fans who have been going to his concerts because they liked Purple Rain back in the day. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

Prince has always been a little nuts - and we love him for it. Still, whenever he get's on the subject of religion or politics, he comes across as a really sinister nutbag. The dude is a little frightening in this respect.
Who's suprised though? He reads only one book, so we're never going to hear anything about enlightenment values.

Well, kind of.
It's true that recording with analog equipment has a warmer richer sound than recording on digital equipment. It's also true that, all other variables being equal, listening to music on a vinyl format is usually a better experience than listening to a digital format.
But, it's not that simple. Regardless of whether music is recorded with digital or analog equipment, and, regardless of the whether it's listened to with analog or digital equipment, if it's mixed by today's standards it will sound squashed and/or distorted.
This is the #1 issue with "digital" music sounding bad. #2 would be low quality playback equipment (earbuds, computer speakers), #3 would be lo-bitrate lossy encoding.
Mix it right, encode it right and play it back on a decent system and digital recordings sound just fine.
That said, I still prefer vinyl. So, if Prince is hating on digital so much, I'll be happy to buy his next LP (that he's not recording and that will not be released) on vinyl. [Edited 6/23/11 11:11am] Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

If that's his views on digital music then why has the employed the method consistently since 1996 and why did he release such pap as 20TEN?
Sorry P but this is hypocrisy...show us how good you can do it with analogue by proving it rather than talking.

Prince said: "It's fun being in Islamic countries, to know there's only one religion. There's order. You wear a burqa. There's no choice. People are happy with that." When asked about the fate of those unhappy with having no choice, he replied: "There are people who are unhappy with everything. There's a dark side to everything."
I thought he just dreamt about some kind of Utopia where everyone shared the same religion and thus religion couldn't cause any kind of cruelty between people, BUT... when that comes without freedom of choice, there's no ideal left... [Edited 6/30/11 0:13am]

"If I go to a place where I don't feel stressed and there's no car alarms and airplanes overhead, then you understand what noise pollution is."
Plus - surprised you forgot to mention it - no chemtrails!
"His unease about the web is not just a matter of legality for him, however, but one of aesthetics. "I personally can't stand digital music," he said. "You're getting sound in bits. It affects a different place in your brain. When you play it back, you can't feel anything."
Yeah. Fucking digital. Good thing you never used a Fairlight on some of your greatest albums...
He criticised the organisers of this weekend's Glastonbury festival, claiming the annual rumours that he is to play the festival are just an attempt to sell tickets on the back of his stardom. "They use my name to sell the festival," he said. "It's illegal. I've never spoken to anyone about doing that concert, ever."
Well - it's a notoriously difficult to shift tickets for Glastonbury. That Eavis will try anything.
*Sheesh*
By the way, how many Islamic countries has Prince actually been to? Is this all based on chatting to the bar staff after that Abu Dhabai F1 gig?

This is great! Isn’t it wonderful how all the usual suspects rush to denounce Prince. It’s like you guys can’t wait for Prince to say something controversial so you can spout off how stupid and crazy he is. How he’s killing his career. How the music stinks and the f*cker won’t release the re-masters or open the vault. Why do you guys torture yourselves so? Prince has always been out there in some way or another. Many people haven’t liked him for various petty reasons. Now you guys throw all kind of hate at him without knowing the context of what he said. U don’t know whether these are quotes or just the writer’s interpretation of what Princes said. Further Prince has always been cryptic in what he says. Many of you simply run with the worst interpretation of what he said. Just so it can justify your disdain for the guy.You don’t have to agree with Prince to respect him. If he doesn’t see the world the way you see it doesn’t make him stupid or crazy or evil. None of us know what prince’s experiences are. We don’t know what he reads or studies. Yet many of you are sure about what he knows and doesn’t know.People calling Prince mentally ill and all that is simply uncalled for. Trouble with the internet is that everyone now thinks their opinion is important. And just because they can type out some words on a keyboard they are the equal of those they have the ability to criticize.Really who is crazier Prince or the so-called fans who can’t seem to just move on to other things that they actually appreciate?[Edited 6/23/11 11:13am]

The tiny font you used for this suggests you don't actually believe what you're saying. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Whether Prince said these things or did not is moot! Y'all still gonna be on his jock and stop acting like it changed something for you. Like this was the final straw! See y'all at the next concert.
When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

It's not torture for me. It's fun! Reading about the latest crazy Prince escapades really brightens my day.
I would say the only people crazier than Prince are those who would try to defend his dream of cramming one religion down everyone's throats. [Edited 6/23/11 11:14am] The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

Bullcrap. People knew for months that his articles were suspect and many warned his employers. Only when a technology blog exposed one of his articles as bullshit they took action.
Which didn't happen. STOP BELIEVING A PROVEN FAKE TWITTER ACCOUNT.
Prince said this dumb shit. Just like he said all the dumb shit previously, sometimes even on camera. Go watch the Tavis Smiley interview. © Bart Van Hemelen

Why blame LG, when it was obviously Prince who made the decision to be a JW? From what I heard, he had quite a few discussions with his mother regarding the JW religion, long before her passing, and way before any discussions about it with LG. So apparently his interest in the JW religion was already there, before he had discussions with LG. Besides, Prince, is an adult, capable of making his own decisions as to what religion he chooses to be a part of. Doesn't always have to be someone else to blame for a decision he made on his own. He was a crazy idiot long before he met Larry Graham. We just didn't realize it because he barely gave interviews. But I remember one from 1995 where he thought that "a sign from god" came through a television while his visit in Monaco.

Do you remember in 2004 when he was on Jay Leno for the Musicology album/tour and said he was retiring his hits(yawn) because he's doing so much new stuff he wants to play that live, and that shit was 7 years ago and he hasn't not played Purple Rain in a main set since then. i'll believe it when i see it (or not in this case)

Respecting his right to actually verbalize is thoughts has zero to do with defending his thoughts on religion. I'm agnostic so if I were as uptight about his views as many of you seem to be i would have signed off eons ago.
