Prince gave a good performance. Maybe not his best, but definitely better than most artist out there. Dude is pushing 53, so we're not going to see him rip his shirt off, grind on the floor and piano, or see the high flying jumps off the piano. Sorely missed are the splits, damn! now if he was still doing the splits, everyone would lose their minds. Hey, he's not 26 anymore, but he more accomplished musically. We still have a lot of good Prince left! __________________________________________________

Every performer has off-nights regardless of age. Prince had an off-night and his current band is a sloppy mix of pieces from past bands that need more rehearsal. No shame in that. Why are people reaching for excuses?

u know sir that sounded like a negative comment be careful because u might get called a "hater"..how DARE u sugest 2 these 'POSITIVE" people 2 be honest about the Prince of today? man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I totally disagree with you. The band was tight and spot on. You can see they have worked hard and well. And by the way they have played a lot for the last few months all together. The don't need to rehearse more. I love the Renato + Cassandra and Blackwell on drums + Prince on the guitar. Perfect match.

the problem is prince will never choose a interviewer that will ask the questions the fans need 2 be answered even when tavis smiley asked him a direct strong question he avoided it by giving another answer that had NOTHING 2 do with the question asked
1. so when is 20ten going 2 be released state wide? or will the US get a deluxe version instead?
2. your tour is called to welcome 2 america and u have a song of the same name that u have done on occasion during this tour, when will this song and others be released if your in so called "studio rehab" again like u were when emancipation came out?
3. why do u continually promote ur back catalogue when someone of ur stature has so many other songs that u have done that are so superb but seldom played?
4. do u find it irony that u were in the warner bros studio last night? the same company that u had so much beef with in your career?
5. it's great that ur ticket prices are 25 bucks now, why wasn't this done in new york, new jersey and the carolina's? man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Yeah I tell you 'LayDown' is not off tempo. It is cheer perfection. Yeah I tell you the synth lines are not out of place on TB1. Yeah I tell you the D-Train cover rocked the place. Yeah I tell you you're acting like the music Expert you would like to be and that you are not.

Prince fans are really awful!
With that being said ^^^
I thought the performances were a lot of fun and it's making me think about a LA trip. I haven't been in 2 years so I think I'm over due!

ah isn't prince doing that himself these days? i mean i don't know about u but i was looking 4 the new music at his shows in NYC and pretty much all i heard was CLASSIC prince .so shouldn't this really be turned 2 prince himself instead of the die hards who wish that the 'CLASSIC PRINCE" of years past came forth and pushed the new material more than the old?
just food 4 thought man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Here is run down of my comments: I rewatched the clips.
-LAYDOWN: I think Laydown was funky and completely "blew the roof off". I liked the show aspect of it & it is LIVE MUSIC. I saw Conan before and he had a band on there that were standing and sulking in front of their mics so give Prince credit for bringing it.
-LOVED the interview. He is so charming & made me proud to be a fan.
-DJ with the headress was WEIRD lol. Channeling the Hindu Gods but seemed forced. Why was she there?
-BEAUTIFUL ONES: Misty was so so and lacked chemistry. I think its unoriginal now to have a ballet number when there was just a huge movie called THE BLACK SWAN. Yes I know Misty is the real Black Swan but that movie beat Prince to the punch. He should come up with something fresh. His vocals were fine but I think he was having mic issues.
-LAST NUMBER: Shelby sounded great but wanted to SEE atleast more of him in the back. Loved him playing the drum. That reminded me of teh Around the World in a Day era.

Oh hush you, when he's playing to an arena, full of fans from various stages of his career, he has to play classics, it would be ridiculous if he didn't. His 20Ten album was not released in the U.S., and he only played a few songs from there at MSG and IZOD.
He has fans in various age groups/generations, so of course he's going to play the songs most familiar to fans on a wide-range basis. I could see him performing in a small venue, where he could bring out more rarities, try out some new tracks, because most of the hardcore fans will know what time it is when he does that, but in an arena, expect to always here the classics, thrown in with a few current/recent songs. I have to disagree with alot of this negativity. Some of the same people complaining were the same ones complaining that he wasn't reaching out to his fans. Make up your minds. The whole thing was great, and I respect Prince even more after this interview with Lopez. He clearly explained himself to everyone. I never seen him as open on any other interwiews. That is ONE beautiful man !![Edited 4/14/11 9:50am] [Edited 4/14/11 9:53am]

What is the deal with the gold guitar? I am pretty sure I saw a clip of Prince playing one with a unpainted pick guard. The one he held up was painted gold.

oh hush up u where my skittles? and as 4 arenas, after the garden shows i'm resigned now 2 say that i will only peep a prince show if it's in a small venue from now on this way i won't waste my money anymore ..tho how come LA gets the 25 ticket price? that's jacked up!! lol man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Just my two cents...
Love Prince, seen him a dozen times in concert, been a fan for a couple decades, and I give last nights performance a solid "B" compared to the majority of muscial act performace on talk shows, but comparing it to other Prince television performances, I'd have to knock the grade down a bit...
Laydown - unlike many, I actually like the recorded version of the song. Short, quirky & funky - even though the "purple yoda" lyric makes me cringe a bit. Last night, while the guitar work was a nice addition, it really didn't blow me away like his Superbowl, SNL Fury, and HoF performances. I kept waiting for that moment where he really tore it up with the guitar solo like I've seen dozens of times. It didn't quite happen...
Beatiful Ones - looked nice, the chick was hot, but vocals & arrangment did seen a little off...
The last song - nice performance, could have done without Shelby for sure (needs to give her the boot already in my opinion), but the whole thing I think would work much better in the context of a full concert, not really something for TV...
My only real gripe (or rather wish) is that when Prince gets the opportunity (or rather decides) to preform in front of millions, he really needs to pull out all the stops, and throw it down. Just based on last nights show, do you think he really gained that many new "non-Prince" fans? Yes, most of the people here know what Prince is capable of, especially in his live shows, hense the reason why there seems to be a lot of disapointment. But to the "non-Prince" fans watching last night, while they probably thought it was entertaining, it really had nothing to cause the casual listener or non-fan to say "Damn, I got to go see that live!" - which I think was (or should) have been the whole point to going on in the first place - to promote the 21 Nights shows.
Most of the people that know me know of my Prince love, and I'll give them a heads up when the man is performing to tell them to tune in. After the Superbowl, SNL & HoF performances I got a ton of "Damn, that was awesome" & "make sure you bring me when you go to his next concert" repsonses....but I have yet to get anything of the sort today (and after watching, wasn't really expecting to).
This goes all the way back to when he did the MTV special back in the ninties & after all the build-up - premiered the "Betcha By Golly Wow" video. Prince, if you want to grow the fanbase, you got to bring what we all know you are more then capable of - just throw down on the guitar - and save the rest for your repertoire for albums & full concerts...
That's my two cents...bring on blasting!

Sheila looked fabulous like she always does.
Prince's heels are getting too high.
George's shoes were the business!
Rosario just needs to give him some already.
I hated the setlist!
Still love my baby Prince all day every day!

You gotta assume that's it's a good deal less than SNL or The Tonight Show. "New Power slide...."

Prince didn't play the gold strat. He brought it out during the interview when George was talking about all the money Prince donates to charity.

Maaannnn....look... one can really tell the post Purple Rain fans! 1st - Pre -'85 fans can recall the days Prince "NEVER" would have done a show like Lopez. He didn't sit down for Arsenio. Interviews were far and in between. So I'm sure long time fans are "appreciative" for last night.
2nd - Prince is 53....not 23.....his eyes, ears, legs, hands, etc, are 53. So dude is gonna need lyric sheets.....and stuff written on piano...he's not a lip syncher!
3rd - people are entitled to their opinion...but I'm willing to bet Prince's performance was waaaay better than majority of what most artists can do!
As far as the interview goes...it's easy to say what one would ask.....different story when you're in front of greatness! Lopez was probably beside himself that Prince was there!

At what point were they tight? I've listed specific criticisms and none of this band's defenders have said it wasn't true. IMO, Prince is bored with this live show. I think he's added these gimmicky musicians and dancers to keep himself amused and locked in. But what it looks like, to those of us who know better, is a mess. He literally should replace everyone. Even Shelby was pitchy.

Not trying to blast but I got quite a few txts last night from some "new" fans. My point is, hey we may thing this performance was "okay" but someone else may think "that was a hell of a show... I'm buying tickets". I know for me, it made me want to go from Charleston to LA. I liked the show. Yes, some notes were off. Loved laydown. Loved the hell out of beautiful ones. The interview was nice. And his outfits were amazing. Red is my favorite. Shelby killed it. Love her strong voice. Call me one of "those" fan, who just loves everything. I could care less what you think about what I think. Prince has still got it. my This better antonb and PurpleSpirit319

I often wondering when reading these threads if I saw the same thing as those posting very different response did? And I realized I did not "see" the same thing. We each have our own reality, in my reality, Prince was absolutely brilliant in his performance on the show last. I do not have TV. But found full clips of the songs and interviews this morning on YouTube. When he opened with Laydown and the way he walked out from the rear of the stage, I mean Damn, he is so still so cool. I love that song, to me it is the best of his dark downbeat thumping, oh yeah, songs since Gett Off.
The interview, what do you expect? I thought again he was great. I had never seen or even heard of this George Lopez guy. Would somebody please ask him to clear his throat when he speaks. He spent half the interview with the focus on himself. Prince was bright, animated, humorous and seems happier than I have ever seen him.
I thought it really said something about where he is in terms of self confidence and ego when he chose to close out the program with a song that he was not the center of attention of. I remember being at a sound check on the 1999 tour, now all the guys who run spots are local union folks. They get lighting cue sheets etc and practice during sound check. Well one of the spots was following Dez, in the middle of the song, Prince stopped it, pointed up at the guy running the spot and said something to the effect of "have you seen a ticket for tonight's show, well have you, does it say Dez Live? Nope, It says P-R-I-N-C-E. Case you don't know, Prince, me, one and the same. Got it."
In the reality I see, this is a very special place in Prince's career and perhaps his life. I went to one of the Oakland shows, and was just blow away. A friend just sent the REEL 3 DVD from MSG 2/7/11, and I just thought again he was so on and appeared to be having so much fun.
So if your reality is that he was off, that his song selections for the current tour suck, and sure I would like to hear certain songs, but I sort of doubt he will ever play LaLaLaHeHeHe (the extended version). And as far as medleys of songs go, man, I started bitching about that when he was hit and running to promote or hide from Under Cherry... Then I realized, enjoy what you get or don't go.
It is all in your mind. Not to say that one shouldn't be critical, there certainly will be nights that are off. But what I saw this morning on YouTube, all I can say is wow.
Was it good for you, was I what you wanted me to be! My answer is Absolutely.
