Oh hush you, lol when he's playing to an arena, full of fans from various stages of his career, he has to play classics, it would be ridiculous if he didn't. His 20Ten album was not released in the U.S., and he only played a few songs from there at MSG and IZOD.

He has fans in various age groups/generations, so of course he's going to play the songs most familiar to fans on a wide-range basis. I could see him performing in a small venue, where he could bring out more rarities, try out some new tracks, because most of the hardcore fans will know what time it is when he does that, but in an arena, expect to always here the classics, thrown in with a few current/recent songs.

[Edited 4/14/11 9:42am]

oh hush up u lol where my skittles? and as 4 arenas, after the garden shows i'm resigned now 2 say that i will only peep a prince show if it's in a small venue from now on this way i won't waste my money anymore ..tho how come LA gets the 25 ticket price? that's jacked up!! lol

The $25 ticket price was probably to compensate for the extremely short notice of 2 days. It would be unrealistic and an asshole move to expect people to shell out major dollars for such short notice shows. Also please keep in mind the prices apply to the 3 shows that went on sale so far. It hasn't been confirmed for the next 18 dates to come. Also tickets in NYC and NJ started at $20.10.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Not listening through my computer. I'm listening in a pro recording studio. Tell me Laydown isn't an off tempo hot mess. Tell me The Beautiful Ones didn't feature out of place synth lines and breakdowns thrown in for pretty much no reason. Not to mention Mayte 2.0. The D-Train cover got off to an extremely shakey start, only to smooth out on the chant section, but go straight a predictable cheeze-fest with the jazz-salsa breakdown. Prince was funny though when he broke out his old high school marching band drum. smile I bet some of those LA shows will be pretty good, but last night was sloppy.

[Edited 4/14/11 7:51am]

Yeah I tell you 'LayDown' is not off tempo. It is cheer perfection. Yeah I tell you the synth lines are not out of place on TB1. Yeah I tell you the D-Train cover rocked the place.

Yeah I tell you you're acting like the music Expert you would like to be and that you are not.

If anyone here plays music themselves they would notice it WAS off in places the second you heard it. (more towards the end) And I ain't talkin tempo. Seemed as he and John B got off the same page. I don't get why people get so offended when it's pointed out that this was not a very good show for him. People have off nights period. I know we don't usually see Prince off very much but he really was. I'd also have to say the mix did not help it any either.

All this back and forth crap is crazy. If you liked it, great! If not great too! There's no need attack band members talking about how ugly there are etc. I'm tired of the Shelby-Liv thang to no end but why attack them personally? Prince is the one pushing them on us. And if the show was off why make silly excuses? It is was it is and everybody will have their own take on it. Problem is you have extremes on both sides. One side being overly positive just to defend and take it personally and the other side that hates everything he's done since the 80's.

A couple of possibly illuminating tidbits from the interview; that the industry is going through changes and how he's in "recording rehab" (I know he's said this before) - This may explain the laissez faire attitude to releasing stuff these days and why 20Ten didn't make it to the USA.

Not to say there won't be the usual annual new releases, but it doesn't sound like he's got any big plans or ideas in the works in terms of studio work. Maybe just happy to rake in the cash from some easy live shows whilst he figures out what his next move is.

What is the deal with the gold guitar? I am pretty sure I saw a clip of Prince playing one with a unpainted pick guard. The one he held up was painted gold.

Hi! hug

Prince didn't play the gold strat. He brought it out during the interview when George was talking about all the money Prince donates to charity.

Hey! I meant when he played it at msg. The photos I saw had an unpainted pic guard. The one last night was painted. This was mentioned before. That there may be 2 gold guitars.

I believe he was referring to official covers released on CD by other artists.

He's only done 6 of those in his long career...

I Can't Make U Love Me

Betcha By Golly Wow

One Of Us

La, La, La Means I Love U

Everyday Is A Winding Road

Case Of U

I don't count 'Purple House' since it was for a tribute CD.

That's not a lot of covers for an artist with his career span. Others with that longevity are doing whole cover CD's by this point.

If anyone knows more that were officially released feel free to correct me.

yes but he has a problem even when someone covers one of his songs on their album. If i were a musician, i would be honoured that people were covering my work. And he has said he dislikes when people change his lyrics when they are covering his song, yet he changes lyrics himself like "i cant make you love me"

Don't forget his cover of Crimson and Clover on LotusFlow3r! Otherwise, I agree 100% with you. I don't think Prince has a problem with people covering his songs as much as he does with record labels owning the rights to his songs and allowing other artists to cover them without any regard for preserving the song's artistic integrity or even attempting to maintain a decent level of musicianship.

Also, I could be wrong but it seems like every artists covers other people's work at some point during a live show. It keeps the show fresh and it keeps the crowd engaged!

lol Well, didn't you buy the $20 tickets plus tax/fees tickets, which was about $33, and that's $8.00 less than the $25 for the LA shows? That wasn't a bad price, especially for NYC. I think since you don't care for arena shows, you should stick to the small venue shows, which who knows if he may do that in LA? Ss get your airfare ready in case.

Honkey Tonk Woman on the video The Undertaker (released in Europe). Betcha by Golly Wow, La, La, La Means I Love U, One Of Us, I cCan't Make U Love Me from Emancipation. Every Day is a Winding Road from Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. He forgets more than lyrics it seems.

Alicia Key's cover of "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore?" is a good example of why other artists covering songs can become an annoying problem. Because of her success as an artist, SO many people my age are completely unaware that Alicia actually covered Prince on that song. I've had actual arguments with (very stupid) people who insist that Prince covered Alicia! Anyway, I'm not saying she didn't credit him on the album (I have it somewhere and I'm guessing she did), but people often don't read album notes - especially these days! So can you imagine putting your heart and soul into creating a piece of music and having someone record it decades later without even having to ask for you permission AND getting all the credit for it - or even worse, BUTCHERING it beyond recognition???

I think that's his only real problem with artists covering his songs. (ps- Alicia didn't butcher that song.) I'm sure that he doesn't mind if you ask him and he approves, but he just doesn't like when artists, prompted by their record companies, cover his songs without asking. I believe it falls under intellectual property, and to me, unconstitutional that somebody can steal property and get away with it. P gets visibly irritated by it, understandably. And I think the basis of it is that he feels like people don't give music and musicians the same respect that they do for movies, television, or something in print.

If I were to copy someone else's term paper and turn it in as my own, I'd get caught and suffer consequences. If a TV show copies a segment or scene from another TV show in an attempt to pass it off as original (i.e. not a parody or spoof), they'd also get in trouble. And if a movie copies the storyline from another movie, they'd have consequences to face. However, when an artist copies a song by another artist and fails to acknowledge that, either in their album booklet or by paying royalties, there are no consequences. Because they original artist wasn't acknowledged or paid royalties, they lose money. confused And the ironic thing is, the artist who stole the music loses money too, because they likely weren't making much in the first place. When you have that "Someone's messing with my money" mentality, obviously you'd be upset.

He's been saying that the music industry is "changing", but he's been saying that for almost 10 years, and I don't see much of a difference, if any at all.

I don't think Prince even knows what he means when he's talking about covers. If someone covered Prince the way he covered Jimi on "Dreamer"--without even the slightest acknowledgment of the original material--I'm sure Prince would have some complaints.

Here is run down of my comments:

I rewatched the clips.

-LAYDOWN: I think Laydown was funky and completely "blew the roof off". I liked the show aspect of it & it is LIVE MUSIC. I saw Conan before and he had a band on there that were standing and sulking in front of their mics so give Prince credit for bringing it.

-LOVED the interview. He is so charming & made me proud to be a fan.

-DJ with the headress was WEIRD lol. Channeling the Hindu Gods but seemed forced. Why was she there?

-BEAUTIFUL ONES: Misty was so so and lacked chemistry. I think its unoriginal now to have a ballet number when there was just a huge movie called THE BLACK SWAN. Yes I know Misty is the real Black Swan but that movie beat Prince to the punch. He should come up with something fresh. His vocals were fine but I think he was having mic issues.

-LAST NUMBER: Shelby sounded great but wanted to SEE atleast more of him in the back. Loved him playing the drum. That reminded me of teh Around the World in a Day era.

I though Laydown was really cool too, and I'm so happy he actually sat down for a real interview. Yeah, the questions seemed to be off-the-cuff, but Prince seemed relaxed and talked more openly than in the past.

The DJ with the headdress is called DJ Rashida. She's pretty well known, and has worked with MJ, from my understanding. The headdress actually reminded me of the cover of ArchAndroid by Janelle Monae. Those head pieces looked so similar, and she could've been paying homage to that.

It looked like Misty messed up at one point during her performance and she kinda laughed it off. I didn't get the same energy from her that I got from the 12/29 W2A concert. As for the ballet being unoriginal, yeah........no. Prince has had dancers on stage with him on and off since the SOTT days, and the kind of dancers he has simply reflect on who he is as a person at the time. And he DEFINITELY shouldn't let go of Misty just because of Black Swan. The movie was big, but let's not act like it influenced a generation of people or something. It was a movie that catered to the Oscars that happened to be about ballet. And let's not forgot, Prince has been using Misty since 2009, so technically, Black Swan copied him. As for his vocals, yeah they were off. It wasn't his best performance and wasn't his worst.

I totally agree with that last part though. I like that he showcased his band members and singers for the last number. It really gave them a chance to shine. And I like that he got on some drums really quick at the end. The finale was fantastic. When he pretended to throw his drums to the audience at the end eek I thought he was really gonna do it! Close call.

On a side note, I tried my hardest, but I couldn't recognize the Twinz. Their hair is so much shorter and darker now and their bangs covered their face so I couldn't see them. I thought they were unnecessary for Laydown, but added a little pizzazz for his cover at the end.

This just hit me. Prince, during the interview, said that a cover did just that, "cover" the original version. From the way he put it, he wanted other people to acknowledge when they covered his songs and not take the glory that isn't rightfully theirs. Half an hour later, he covered a song with no verbal acknowledgement of the original artist. That was a perfect opportunity to show them how to do it right, and he didn't take it. The man is a walking contradiction, that's for sure. lol

time flies.

Agreed! I didn't mean to imply that she did. I meant that far worse than a situation like one where Keys did what is (in my opinion) an excellent cover of his song is the potential one where an artist does a cover that is absolutely horrendous and then that becomes the version that is best known. i.e. Mariah Carey and Dru Hill's cover of The Beautiful Ones. While I wouldn't necessarily call it horrendous, it is nowhere near on par with the original (in my opinion) and it makes me cringe a little to know that there is an entire generation who only knows that version of the song.

I don't see much change in the industry either - except for the proliferation of absolute nonsensical garbage that they're promoting as "music" and trying to pass off as "artistry."

I'm not a huge fan of Alicia Keys but I dug her cover far more than TLC's butchering of "If I Was Your Girlfriend." I'm not even sure why Prince let that get released if he was allowed to hear a final pre-release version of it.

Prince has always been cryptic in his interviews: sometimes he says things even he knows are b.s. or examples of him throwing stones in a black kettle...Last night was no different. Most of what he had to say was heartfelt.

I kind of miss him speaking through a third party during interviews or him giving the interviewer a very strict list of things that he can be asked. His interviewing reticence and cryptic responses remind of Sly Stone but much of Sly's reticence and cryptic nature is from too much acid and other drugs.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, I will say that TLC did not butcher If I Was Your Girlfriend. Not in the slightest. In fact, I thought their cover was very nice.

time flies.
