Just got this email from tickets@elevate.com:

Order Cancellation

Continually changing circumstances, including in-climate weather, resulted in the inability of performers to travel, and in the cancellation of "the Event", originally scheduled for February 4, 2011. Event production equipment, Prince and musicians were unable to make it to Dallas in a timely manner.

To obtain a refund: if you purchased with a credit card, your card will be "credited" within 72 hours. All others can return to their point of purchase to receive a refund.

All performers and organizers put forth their best efforts, and like the guests, are disappointed it could not take place. Thank you for your understanding and your desire to continue the support of music and arts education.

Your order with the Event has been cancelled. Below is a summary of the items that have been removed from your shopping cart.

This is reassuring. I hadn't heard of Elevate before this fiasco but they seem to be a company that handles ticket sales for a variety of events. That suggests to me that they might be able to take the hit here even if some of the money has already disappeared. Sounds like they sold very few tickets anyway, so there shouldn't be many refunds to make. beg

Well that's good whew

rolleyes But they're killing me how they're still blaming this fiasco on the weather. The weather didn't have anything to do with them not selling enough tickets to get the money for the event or failing to pay everyone involved. So, they're still lying.

The weather is not going to sue them, so it's a convenient scapegoat. Prince, if you're disappointed, come back and see us in August. It will not snow then, I promise you.

Sad thing is, I think Prince will die broke. In a few years time, he won't be able the pull the audiences in like he used to, partly because of age, partly because of reputation.

The fan base is dwindling at a pace now, even a lot of die hards are walking away. When he keeps pulling his stunts, he only fuels the problem.

But his ego would never let him behave modestly, and he'll end up signing his catalogue away to pay the bills.

Sorry, but this latest fiasco will not affect his concert experience, which is now his main money maker. I have friends going tonight and nobody cares to that extent, meaning they will not let it stop them from going to see him live. People have been talking about his "dwindling" fanbase for how many years now and if you have been to his latest shows it seems more like wishful thinking.

I hope you're right. I would like to imagine that there are an increasing number of young people out there who are eager to see Prince live, so he can do a full U.S. tour next time. But it's hard to see how he can keep that up without releasing and promoting new music. How old are your friends who are going to the concerts?

The ones going tonight are in their late 30's. The last shows I went to , late twenties, and all you have to do is look at the young Orgers on this site alone, the younger fans are able to seek out his music without him releasing his stuff through the mainstream.

Didn't he get mad at the crowd at one of the shows for not knowing the lyrics to "Uptown?"

I'm sure younger fans can download any music he puts out. The question is, how are they going to find out about it if they haven't heard any of his classic work? I thought it was a bit funny that one of the ads for the W2A shows suggested that people might have heard about Prince from their parents.

The intrepid reporters at WFAA-TV in Dallas have gotten a copy of a contract for the Super Bowl concert (not signed by Prince's agent, however), and posted it on the Web:

http://images.bimedia.net...ntract.pdf

Another thread has been started here:

http://prince.org/msg/7/352576

I've never seen an artist engagement concert before. I take it that Meridian Entertainment Group, a more experienced company, was acting "on behalf of" Chris Arnold's "River Alexander Group."

A few interesting tidbits:

1. The guests were supposed to get an MP3 version of 20Ten. Finally, a chance to listen to that album without resorting to the dead Internet or British newspapers.

2. Prince would have gotten 4 Super Bowl tickets. Who would he have invited?

3. If Prince signed the contract, he was supposed to get half 30 days before the concert. Did he get that money? My guess is he got at least some of it or he would have pulled the plug long before, but that's just speculation on my part.

4. Prince was supposed to still get his $1.5 million fee even if the concert was cancelled. I doubt the money is there to pay him.

5. Prince wasn't supposed to perform until after midnight, although the event was to start at 8 p.m. The scholarship winners would have gotten 15 minutes each. Chris Arnold would have been the emcee.

Alas, it could have been a magical night. Reading this contract makes me feel a little nosy, like I'm poking through someone's dirty laundry. Interesting, though.

Given that Prince's performance was scheduled to last 45 minutes, by my calculations he would have been paid about $555 per second. Not a bad rate. I can see why he found this deal attractive. Do you think he would have worked "Moonbeam Levels" into the set?

I noticed also that the concert was referred to in this draft as "the Experience," rather than "the Event." They should have stuck with "the Experience," as that more accurately describes what happened.

72+ hours after I got the official cancellation email and still no refund. Hmm....

I actually started the process for that today. The credit card company said it shouldn't be a problem, because I have the email saying I'm supposed to get a refund. The people who have to worry are the ones (if any) who gave Chris Arnold and his friends a check.

I doubt many people bought general admission tickets with a check. But at least one person paid for a $25,000 VIP table by check. From the DMN:

http://www.dallasnews.com...l-bash.ece

Dr. Asad Dean of Fort Worth . . . purchased a $25,000 VIP table for 10 by check and was en route to the gala but never made it there.

“One of the individuals from my table who was already there called to say, ‘Don’t come. It’s canceled.’ So I didn’t physically get to the hotel,” said Dean, who has been in e-mail communication with Arnold. “I e-mailed him, and he has responded to both of my e-mails. He has apologized and promised a full refund. I will give them a chance to make that refund happen.”

The existence of those VIP tables should make it easier to bring a lawsuit in federal court if they don't end up getting paid back. $75,000 is the minimum for bringing a federal diversity case. But as long as my credit card company has my back I can relax now. popcorn

I doubt that. He seems to get more fans every year, whether he loses some diehards or not. He only did 6 shows in the W2A concert series, and had one of the highest, grossing concerts so far in this country, and it wasn't even billed as a tour. On top of that, he donated 1.5 million to 3 organizations from the concert series. So, even at this time period in his music career, he's doing pretty darn good as far as pulling in money from performing live, and didn't even release his latest album in his own country, and still did well with the recent concert series.

I'm having some fun trying to picture Prince's testimony:

Attorney: Could you please state your name for the court?

P: My name is Prince and I am funky.

Attorney: Do you understand why you are here today?

P: I am a witness for the prosecution of a hate in this love affair.

Attorney: No, actually you are a defendant. My clients allege that they bought tickets to see you, and you were paid but did not perform. Is that correct?

P: I who am guilty of nothing but always wantin' to be there?

Attorney: The fact that you weren't there is the problem.

P: Whatever it is you think I did, you're wrong, I wouldn't even dare.

Attorney: Did you receive any payment for your performance at "the Event?"

P: Money don't matter tonight. It sure didn't matter yesterday.

Attorney: It matters to my clients.
