I dont know anything about the promotion or events regarding this performance but you definitely cant belive everything you read

1) I find it hard to believe the band was there but not Prince, I highly doubt Prince would send his band to TX for a non performance and send them back to NYC knowing they have a big NYC show tomorrow

2) this performance was probably cancelled long ago but the promoter announced the cancellation last minute just to get ppl to show up for whatever event or performance is substituting it

3) after Prince's amazing Superbowl performance in my opinion he no longer should do any superbowl linked performances, he left a huge mark , no need to do anything else

4) In my opinion Prince and his lawyers should be over this no-show madness and wouldnt purposedly involve themselves in another episode, just my opinion, all fingers should be pointed at THE PROMOTER - not Prince

5) dont believe everything you read, this fiasco sounds like it was made up and planned, anything for press

With regard to your point (2), there has been no substitute event or performance. Those of us who bought tickets are supposed to get our money back tomorrow. If not, this is going to be an even bigger story. It's clear that the organizers knew they were in trouble based on the conflicting reports that went out on the day of the concert. Perhaps they were holding out hope that there would be a lot of last minute ticket purchases that would enable them to pay the hotel and the performers. The responsible thing would have been to cancel the concert and blame it on the weather.

I don't think we should let this story slide as just another cancelled concert. There are lessons that need to be learned for the future.

Haterina, I think Joyce must have mis-spoken or was mis-quoted on that quote because she said in the original cancellation on Friday that the PROMOTER River Alexander Group approached them to be the beneficiary.

In a nutshell:

1. This was NOT a charity event. It was primarily a FOR PROFIT concert by an organizer who USED the charity's name as a FRONT promising to give them a SMALL portion of the proceeds from the show. The foundation had nothing to do with the planning and neither did Prince.

2. The River Alexander Group is a fly by night production company that was ONLY incorporated in the state of Texas a few days AFTER the concert was announced. The "manager" of the company is a rooty poot muhhfucka named Chris Arnold who was the sports reporter for the local hip-hop radio station and is currently the sideline reporter at the local Mavericks basketball game. Chris is a huge Prince fan but has ZERO experience doing this type of thing.

3. Prince was at the hotel, sitting in his limo, waiting for word that they had his money and that the place was ready to go. Of course, neither occurred so no show. Chris Arnold himself said Prince was there after announcing the cancellation. My peeps saw the two white limos, one of which EB came out of, and the other that Prince was in.

4. Another reason there was no show was because the hotel was ALSO not paid for the facilities, food, alcohol, equipment, etc. Hotel reps told the organizers that if they didn't get paid they were pulling the plug on it, which is I think the REAL reason there was no performance. Even if EB and Prince were willing to perform, the hotel was not having it because they had not been paid. They apparently stationed employees to block people's access into the ballroom.

5. Performers almost NEVER peform for free at ANY charity event even when it's really for charity. They also commonly charge their OWN organizations back for their expenses. Furthermore, I don't think George has anything to do with this foundation. This is really Kenny and his mother's deal and they continue to use George's name. I attend most of the Goss-Michael gallery events and it's been a long time since I've seen George at anything.

If that was the case, then there's your problem. CA obviously is no Don King when it comes to promotion. But because of P's notoriety, the media's placing some, if not all the blame at his doorsteps.

Why did Prince associate himself with these clowns in the first place? Oh yeah, because HE DOES NOT HAVE PROPER MANAGEMENT. What kind of idiot says "yes" to an event that is supposed to take place in a month and that is organised by a company with a non-existing track record?

First of all I'm sure that's why he has a manager that handles these types of dealings. Bottom line is that you don't know how truthful the event organizers were, up until the day of the event to Prince's team. There was a cancellation announced yesterday through a press release. Then it was announced that the event was back on. (see electricberet's post below) tickets.

I blame the event organizers for not being truthfully upfrontl to those who purchased tickets and should have just cancelled it altogether. In the end, after all of this, I doubt Prince and his team have anymore dealings with them. There's way too many different stories surfacing right now to say which is true. Life goes on.

(Bolded part) I agree electricberet, these organizers should have cancelled it based on low ticket sales, but like you stated, seems like they were holding out on the hope more tix would be purchased close and on the day of the event. With weather conditions the way they were yesterday, and many flights delayed/cancelled, even for many trying to get to the Superbowl. That should have been a hint to cancel the event. There's definitely many lessons to be learned from this, and I hope the event organizers will pay you and others who purchased tix for this event your money back. Seems now all this is definitely in their hands to clean up a mess they should have never allowed to happen, based on a hunch that they would be able to sell more tix.

It seems now the event organizers are embarassed and instead of coming forth, and being honest that it was their failed attempt to cancel the event ahead of time, due to their lack of organizing this event in a professional manner, maintaining their end of the business arrangments, and not having sufficient funds to pay the artists scheduled to perform that night, as well as the money for the charity promised the donations. It seems they've left it up to the press to run so many conflicting stories, and unfortunately not considering some would blame Prince for their mishandling of the event.

Perhaps this will change after I post this, but right now the most recent tweet from the event organizers is that you can buy 2 tickets for the price of 1:

http://twitter.com/theeventdallas

The official webpage for the event says nothing about a cancellation:

http://www.princedallas.com

Those of us who kept up with the org discussion knew there were problems. But we were hoping that Prince might decide to perform anyway. The official lines of communication gave no indication that there was a problem; even the rescinded cancellation was announced only by a press release, not by an email to the ticket holders. They certainly knew how to contact us, as we did get an email about the change in venue.

That's another thing, that I do find very interesting.

According to the Associated Press:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/a...ce_concert

But the concert, recently moved from a tent in downtown Dallas to a hotel just north of the city, never materialized Friday night, and a source close to Prince, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak publicly, told The Associated Press on Saturday that he never came to Dallas.

Prince's camp said the organizers never arranged for transportation for him and his band. Prince was also worried that the disorganization meant the organizers would not have the technical aspects necessary for him to put on his performance, the source said.

Why would someone in Prince's camp tell the Associated Press that "he never came to Dallas"?

Yet, there are people that were there (including your peeps)...that say he was in fact in Dallas AND actually made it to the hotel?

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I bought two of the $1,500 tickets. That's about 10 times more than I've paid for any other concert, but I really wanted to see Prince again, and he hasn't been here since 2004. I think someone in the Concerts forum said that they were reserving one of the VIP tables.

It's sad that Prince fans should have to spend the equivalent of a mortgage payment or two to get a ticket. I was thinking of flying to New York to catch one of the shows there, but after this experience I'm not making any trips just to see him.

shrug

Like I said and posted, SHE clearly changed her tune because on the day of the show she said the promoter contacted the foundation to be involved not Prince. shrug

Considering that there's absolutely NO mention of the organizer's company shows that the promoter was totally using the foundation as a front to draw people into coming to the show. When, in reality, this was a for profit event. confused

[Edited 2/6/11 12:55pm]

nod They shoulda cancelled on Monday when they moved the event. They must've known they hadn't sold enough tix to pay for his fees/expenses, the hotel PLUS having to pay for all of the costs/rentals associated with tent locale, which was a dumb idea from jump.

Don't let the punk Organizers get u down about P or should you? Seems like the NYC concerts have been awesome from peoples reviews!

I'm sure they have been awesome. But wasn't one of them cancelled? I wouldn't want to pay for plane tickets and a hotel and then have the concert be cancelled. You might get the money back on the tickets but not the other expenses. There's also the time factor involved. It's one thing to take an evening off for a concert; it's another thing to take several days off for it. That's why someone came up with the concept of a tour where the artist goes to different cities around the world to bring his music to the people. Prince used to do some of those.

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

SCNDLS, your Hilarious and break it down to the tee!

on your #2 "Chris Arnold who was the sports reporter for the local hip-hop radio station"

Does he not do that anymore? Wasn't he with 104.5?

3. Prince was at the hotel, sitting in his limo, waiting for word that they had his money and that the place was ready to go. Of course, neither occurred so no show. Chris Arnold himself said Prince was there after announcing the cancellation. My peeps saw the two white limos, one of which EB came out of, and the other that Prince was in.

lol "waiting for word that they had his money and that the place was ready to go." eek lol

That doesn't sound like a Superstar, sounds like somebody just getting started/coming up in the business...biggrin

lol Actually, the image of P waiting on his money reminds me of Aretha (cuz that's some gangsta shit the queen would do) and the character Don Cheadle played in Ocean's 13 who wanted his money in caaaaaaaash.

Chris was released from the radio station back in April. So, I guess he came up with concert promoting as a side hustle. rolleyes

Yeah, k104 for 14 years. They got rid of Sam Putney too. But I don't care. I don't listen to radio and that morning team made my ass itch. A HUGE benefit of working at home is that I don't have to listent to drive-time, morning radio. shake

Well, considering that...

Prince was at the hotel, sitting in his limo, waiting for word that they had his money and that the place was ready to go.

before bailing out, just hours before showtime.

I have to say...in reality? It certainly doesn't seem like Prince...himself...wasn't in it...just for the profit. confused

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

And what's wrong with that? He agreed to do a show for a certain price. He held up his end of the bargain and appeared. He didn't agree to work for free.

In contrast, this "group" used a charitable foundation as their front in all communications, never letting concertgoers know another entity was running everything and handling the money and only giving the foundation a SMALL amount (I'm hearing 10%) of the proceeds. The first time we heard about this RAG and the REAL relationship with the foundation was the day of the show. That's tantamount to deceptive practices IMO. P wasn't deceptive, the promoter was.

And like I said earlier, EVEN if P and EB wanted to perform, which I know SHE did, the hotel wouldn't allow it because they had not been paid.

That's the story that was on the Yahoo front page for a while. I guess Prince can take some comfort in the fact that he's still famous enough to make news around the world by canceling a concert.

sweething

It sounds as if the Promoter tried to make a big play and fumbled the ball. The concept was not bad, timing was off and then there was the unexpected, mother nature and Dallas' unpreparedness to deal with the snow. (Which was reported on another site--apparently affected SEVERAL events related to the Superbowl.) One month to plan and execute an event with lofty "goals" really is not enough time.

All of this made a perfect storm

And I'm not buying that the weather had ANY impact on this. If they hadn't sold more that a few 100 tix by Monday, when they changed the location, there's no way in hell they woulda sold significantly more in four days before the show, even with good weather. They woulda needed to sell at least 666 tix @ 1500 to get P's million, not to mention a whole lot more to pay the expenses. This is what happens when you have an amateur trynna do big things.

Another thing, there were several events that went on just fine in tents despite the weather. Even the one at fair park where the tent was torn down on Wednesday in the storm.

How about this for a solution: Prince comes back to Dallas, holds a normal concert with reasonably priced tickets at the American Airlines Center (which he sold out the last time he came here), and lets the Goss-Michael scholarship winners perform as part of the concert. Everybody's happy. PR problem solved. What do you think?
