• 30-year revert of ownership applies to Prince's catalog and not 35 as previously speculated

• Prince now owns the masters to For You, Prince and Dirty Mind (this explains out-of-print status - get them while you can)

I'm no US attorney but I really doubt this.

"Termination of the grant may be effected at any time during a period of five years beginning at the end of thirty-five years from the date of publication of the work under the grant or at the end of forty years from the date of execution of the grant, whichever term ends earlier."

Says the law. shrug Unless WB was nice for him or the law used to say "thirty years" when he signed for those transfers, I fail to see how he could already own those copyrights.

Also, his albums after 'Prince' are subject to copyright claims by band members too.

So as long as I don't hear this straight from the horse's mouth I'm not buying it.

Good for you guys that you had the opportunity to speak with Prince and Stephen Hill, and talk about everything from artists he's jammed with, his music/songs, the upcoming W2A tour, to a future album possibly coming out in 2011, mentioning TonyM, to you thinking "Nasser (the security guy) "get the gun" lol (<--j/k that last part was funny), to Prince ownng the masters to some of his albums, discussing American slavery, jim crow/segregation and then you guys hanging out and listening to live music in a club with him...interesting. biggrin Good show, thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Yeah, I believe I've read that same passage before, which is why I was fairly surprised at this new turn of events. I think that law preceded Prince's signing to WB by a couple of years or so as well, so it is possible that WB had proactively shortened the time frame for the artists they signed after the law took effect.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Nice podcast, guys, and congrats on the fun night!

(Did I understand correctly that you guys flew all the way from Australia to New York to catch Tower of Power at BB King's, and you just happened to be here when Prince's people totally coincidentally contacted you about coming to the press conference?)

Great podcast!

Why?? neutral

Several things were revealed and/or confirmed. Including:

• 30-year revert of ownership applies to Prince's catalog and not 35 as previously speculated

• Prince now owns the masters to For You, Prince and Dirty Mind (this explains out-of-print status - get them while you can)

• First 6 albums are already remastered, which includes the ones he owns now

• Regularly meets with WB about back catalog - seems to blame WB turnover on hold-up (I ain't buying that)

• 20TEN Deluxe is definite go and will contain extended versions as well as extra songs

• No Montreux DVD

• New album in 2011 with Tal Wilkenfeld and Chris Colman providing rhythm on some cuts

• And more...

Come on Squirrelgrease, you've been with the program how long? lol We all should know by now that Prince's plan for releases changes very quickly and he's onto something else while we're still holding our breath! I'm not saying neither will see the light of day, but I find it hard to believe that he has been sitting on these finished products and still has interest in them. Only time will tell.

That's true of course. Maybe I should have prefaced it with "Prince said". Then that grain of salt is a given.

30 years to get back your music is like a little lifetime. It can't be fun, waiting for each album's liberation and then discussing the same thing time and time again. Plus he needs to constantly revist "the entire episode", which does not hold the happiest of memories. It must be disheartening.

And using different representatives to make matters, time consuming and impersonal is a corporate strategy. To the executives it's a business deal and paperwork, to Prince it's his heart and soul not to mention pride. Love is stronger than pride, that's true, but in this case, that truth might seem like a misconceived perception.

I think we can drop the 'woe is Prince' act. He was paid for his work, and then resigned the contracts, it's not like they were stolen from him.

I think that being paid for what you do and being respected for what you do are two different things.

yeahthat If Prince hadn't signed a new deal a year prior to the beginning of his "Slave" period, then maybe his argument would have had some credibility. WB got what they wanted, and Prince thought he did too, until prince didn't sell as well as he thought it would. Don't forget that by that time Prince had been in the industry for nearly 15 years...he knew how it worked.

This is big. This is the first major conversation by Prince with some of his fan base where he was pretty straight. He treated them as equals and answered many of their questions. Prince may be getting it. He has to be our friends, not think that we all want to destroy his precious kingdom.

I'm pretty sure that Prince told them some secret stuff, right guys? lol

hmm

now THIS is interesting.

i would mention a word of caution though....as far as putting the remasters out in the market...time is of the essence here.prince might not wanna wait TOO long to do this.i have no desire anymore to buy any of his stuff due to his past actions.

that said, i'm guessing about 100,000 copies of each remastered c.d. to be sold. the hardcore fams will buy it though.

We should probably move this to a new thread.

Similar things were said in the media about MJ and his row with Sony "MJ's albums didn't sell."

I was commenting on the emotional upheaval it takes to get back the rights to your music and being faced with a new representative each time.

When it comes to legal detail, clause expiration timing, extensions, pre-existing conditions, new conditions, annexures etc etc. no one can "know" anything until you see the official contracts. I'm not saying Prince didn't make any mistakes. I'm sure he did, but I wouldn't write the story off based on "Symbol didn't sell as well he thought it would." We know the tip of the iceberg and I guess there were plenty other motivations from both sides under the water.

love the Jim Crowe story, you must have wanted to die on the spot!. Great job and incredibly lucky. Nice to see some bridges being built at last.

As for the remasters I really think this is a very difficult one - who else apart from the hard core are going to buy the classics especially if CDs like Dirty mind have been edited to death. If P's aim is commercial i.e. remaster, release and sell in viable quantities and make some decent $ then he's going to have to really reconnect to the world. That means always being in the public eye, releasing quality records [NOT P Lite!], tour his ass off etc.He also needs to be damn sure that each CD comes with lots of extras. Perhaps the best way forward is purely digital releases only?.

Will be really interestng to see if band members like W&L get a FAIR share for their contributions from any new deals.

Anyway, as always there's interesting times ahead over the next few years.

here's to hoping that "act of god" will also be much longer on the deluxe version.

it needs to be stretched out to at least double it's length. there's enough interesting

ideas in the song, however shortly they pop up, that should be developed more.
