Prince walks off in the middle of a photo shoot?

I remember hearing this story on the Tom Joyner Show! It was either in the late 80's or the early 90's. Anyway the story goes Prince was doing some type of promotional photo shoot and the male photographer made a comment refering to how sexy Prince looked! Prince immediate stopped the shoot and walked off the set!! I believe Cat was with him at the time. Anybody recall this story?

This is repoted to have happened during the Herb Ritts photo shoot. Prince was sitting on the piano with his heels on the keys and when Herb said how sexy it looked, Prince walked out and said to burn the negatives.

Seriously, how is a photobrapher telling the subject he/she is photographing that they, or their pose, looks sexy in any way being rude or be construed as crossing the line? confuse Seems to me it would be helpful to hear ongoing feedback from the photographer during a shoot. It doesn't sound as if this Herb guy was panting or unzipping his fly or doing anything at all 'inappropriate' to the situation while he told Prince that he looked sexy, so what's the big deal?

And it's also my opinion that most men who are completely straight and comfortable with their sexuality aren't going to flip out if another man, straight OR gay, compliments them or tells them they look sexy...especially during a situation such as a photo shoot.

Don't misuse the word homophobic please. What that man did was cross the line. I'm not homophobic, but I don't want a lesbian telling me I"m sexy either. I don't want a straight woman telling me I"m sexy. It crosses the line and makes people feel uncomfortable..and it shouldn't be and ISN'T allowed in the workplace! Sexy refers to finding someone attractive, or sexually stimulating. That IS crossing the line! Why not say to Prince "good job, that's the way to do it." When you tell someone they are sexy, the idea of them arousing you is present....if it weren't, why would you say it?

And Prince is a straight man, so a gay man saying this to him, knowing he is straight is rude. And what straight man wants a gay man calling them sexy? Please! Most wouldn't have been as kind as Prince...

And we don't know how Herb said it, or what he did when he said it..whatever it was, it made Prince feel uncomfortable! That doesn't make him homophobic, that just makes him straight and he should be able to go to work without someone making a sexually suggestive remark towards him. Any other workplace, that would fall under the sexual harrassment clause!

You're right, he could have just told him thanks, but shut up. But if he was feeling uncomfortable, then you can't work like that. It's impossible to work when you feel someone is gawking at you and wanting you and if you don't want them back, it's so uncomforable. And he didn't have to work like that, so he left. Good for him!

I know I've certainly opted for "the infant way" sometimes in my life, particularly when I've had an especially difficult day, been working with difficult people, or had the media and the public in general constantly questioning my sexuality.

Oh, wait. That never happened.

In any case, what I'd really love is for people who have never met me to judge me for a small hissy fit I may or may not have thrown 20 years ago.

wow

where do you folk come from............

same sex can't compliment each other-gay or straight aside................

crossed the line-what freaking line-especially as part of a photographers job is to direct and help the subject look as good as possible

he made light of the fact a very manly voice shouted we love you during the acoustic set in ONA London 2002-didn't walk off-wasn't offended-and........

isn't Morris Hayes gay ?

surely with some of the thinking around here-Prince would've sacked him by now:-o

Most people take compliments regardless of the sexual orientation of the other person. If a photographer is directing a shoot and says to "look sexy" or "yeah, that's sexy" - they are not saying they want to have sex with that person. It's unfortunate that you seem to be consensual with the idea of objectifying someone.

Telling someone that they're sexy or good looking is a compliment. I'm straight but I'd be totally flattered and okay with a homosexual or straight guy telling me I looked sexy/hot. Sure, if things got overly descriptive or if they started trying to test their luck with me, I would be quick to tell them I wasn't interested. But there's no reason that you have to misinterpret someone saying Prince looked good to mean that they were fawning and lusting over him.

Why is it okay for women to call him sexy but not men? Because he doesn't want to fuck men? Please explain this intelligently without just saying that he is a straight man.

You. Are. Homophobic. It's okay. Actually it's not okay. But maybe some day you'll work on it. What Prince did was far more unprofessional than what the photographer did.

So, should the reverse work, too? I should be extremely offended if a woman "crosses the line" by telling me my hair looks sexy--offended just because I'm queer and am not interested in sticking my dick in pussy? Please.

maybe he thought the photographer wasnt being sincere, maybe prince thought he was mocking him

maybe it made him feel self-conscious, maybe he's paranoid and takes offense really easily

maybe prince imagines insult where there is none, maybe he's just insecure and precious

i dont know, but what i do know is; i can't conversate in this thread anymore.

i can't possibly chat under these conditions. too many people have crossed the line.

I guess u havent heard yet, but any negative conitation about or towards homosexuals is HOMOPHOBIA. Homophobe is used alot like the RACE CARD is used anytime someone has an opposing view concerning things in or around that subject. Until you accept all things and all people as equal you are homophobic,racist,sexist,.....the list goes on&on.

Prince's alleged response here seems disproportionate to the alleged comment. Do u think that after 30+ years in the industry he's unable 2 differentiate between the kind of overt sexualisation u allude to in ur comment and a photographer simply 'working' a shoot? This kind of comment is commonplace within hetro-normative culture (just watch any episode of Americas Next Top Model). Ur comment; that this kind of comment is unacceptable in 'any other workplace'; is not valid within this context.

I suspect this is an example of Prince being a tad intolerent which, in my opinion, is at odds with the overt sexualisation of pretty much everything he touched pre-JW (and with which he built a career on). There's no 'rudeness' in Herb Ritt's comment, however, there is in ur's. Please don't contribute 2 this forum with narrow minded bigotry. It's clearly not welcome here.

So, AT FIRST, I'm not a homophobe and I'm a girl.

But still, being a 100% tolerant girl, I think that what Prince did, was the only good way of them all.

Because... doesn't that make u feel awkward when a man says to another man any kind of a compliment?

I mean, it's OK, when a guy says to his mate: 'hey, man, ur hair look awesome!' but when it comes to a man who says to another one: 'yeah, u look really sexy', then it's strange. this guy feels stupid, you as an onlooker feel stupid, everyone feels stupid! So don't tell me that Prince made a mistake because he didn't... I'm only surprised that he didn't kick his ass...

Yeah, and that situation shows that Prince is a real man. At least for me. And I like it! smile
