excited Prince letting the dude know don't say sh*t to him!! HE only wants women saying that!! Haven't some people realized this man is as straight as an arrow?!?!?! Herb is lucky, some guys would have punched him in the face! I don't blame Prince, that's rude and crossing the line! I would have walked out too!! biggrin

It's not rude or crossing the line. You're homophobic.

Don't misuse the word homophobic please. What that man did was cross the line. I'm not homophobic, but I don't want a lesbian telling me I"m sexy either. I don't want a straight woman telling me I"m sexy. It crosses the line and makes people feel uncomfortable..and it shouldn't be and ISN'T allowed in the workplace! And I don't know 1 straight man that wants a gay man telling them they are sexy!

I thought make-up wearing, higheel tottering , possibly 'female split personality' claiming Prince was more secure in his sexuality than that. You have to ask why he had his feet on the piano in the first place if it wasn't to strike a sexy pose...surely not to try a new style of playing?

Um, did you not read the article? It says Herb ASKED him to put his feet on the piano!

And just because someone gets uncomfortable by a sexual remark and walks away, doesn't make them "insecure in their sexuality." By that logic, every women who "feels uncomfortable" when a man stares at them are all "insecure in their sexuality!" Please! If someone is uncomfortable..for whatever reason...they are uncomfortable and don't have to stand for it! Those that do stand for it are often called lily-livered, spineless, etc. And we aren't inside of Prince, so how can anyone judge and say "you shouldn't have been uncomfortable or you're stupid." How arrogant! Everyone takes things differently, it's not a right/wrong thing...everyone reacts differently, feels differently since we all have different life experiences, etc.
Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

or he could have said "cheers thanks, but i'd really appreciate it if you could stay quiet for this shoot, no hard feelings"

or is that just the difference between infants and adults?

You're right, he could have just told him thanks, but shut up. But if he was feeling uncomfortable, then you can't work like that. It's impossible to work when you feel someone is gawking at you and wanting you and if you don't want them back, it's so uncomforable. And he didn't have to work like that, so he left. Good for him!

I'm not sure that telling someone that they look sexy means you want to do them. It could just be a statement of fact.

If he said it to me, i'd say, damn right son!

Oh and did I mention it was HERB RITTS?

[Edited 9/30/10 12:09pm]

I never said Herb was trying to hit on Prince...I said "sexy" probably made Prince feel uncomfortable and he didn't want to be called "sexy" by a man. It could have meant "hmm, you look good, I wanna hit that." Or it could mean "good job, great pose." The problem I have is that according to the article, Herb said something else before saying "You look so sexy!" That last line wasn't needed, he had already complimented him. The "so sexy" was crossing the line IMHO...I wouldn't have liked it either. Not just, "ooh, sexy pose, work it. Yeah that's it, yes, sexy." It was "you look SO SEXY!!" Not everyone likes to be gawked after! And especially when you're already tired, hungry, frustrated, etc. And yes I know it was Herb..point proven!

Everyone on here needs to remember that this was a differnt time period, when Prince grew up, men didn't call other men sexy! Sure in 2010, some find it ok, but let's remember this isn't the way it always been, and even today, some people are still not ok with it.

Your homophobic response is utter bullshit. Herb Ritts is one of the worlds greatest known photographers. He also known as an erotic photographer of men and women. Prince would have known exactly what he was getting into. And don't flatter yourself. Herb Ritts doesn't photograph just anyone, you wouldn't be able to walk in the door let alone walk out.

I know who Herb R is! He worked with MJ on "In The Closet." I'm not impressed with him. Not impressed by his "erotic photograyphy!" He takes all types of photos, not just sexual themes...so you have NO idea what kind of photoshoot this was to be. And I wouldn't have worked with Herb if I had the chance..not my style! As I said before, I'm not impressed by his work at all!

One of the many differences between you and Prince: Prince admired Herb Ritts.

It was 1991.

Prince was over 30 at the time.

ufoclub laid out some truths on the last page that you've obviously chosen to gloss over, so there's not much point discussing it further, suffice to remind you of Prince's deliberately androgynous, excessively erotic and at times homoerotic behaviour long before a suitable "time period" made such antics more widely acceptable.

Daphne, Prince isn't necessarily everything you want him to be - it's entirely possible that he thinks differently to you, feels differently to you and does things for reasons not entirely clear to you. I'm sure you'll tell me that you know this, but post after post from you continues to suggest otherwise.

I truly hope for your sake that you never get to spend any considerable time with the man. You seem to be so attached to your expectations of him that I suspect you would be bitterly disillusioned and disappointed.

Vogue (From Controversy Magazine)

Ain't talkin' about Madonna's Vogue, this is Vogue magazine, the major fashion magazine which ordered a photo shoot on Prince by noted rock photgrapher Herb Ritts. Ritts has photgraphed Madonna and many others for Rolling Stone magazine covers, so he thought that he was experienced in dealing with rock stars, but was surprised to find that Prince wasn't quite what he expected.

On the other hand, Prince was no prima donna but a professional, a perfect gentleman who was willing to sit for Ritts from 10:00am to 7:30pm with nothing but a mug of herbal tea to sustain him. On the other hand, Ritts found that what Prince is professional at is being a musician and performer, not being a fashion model. When asked to pose, jump and spin for the camera, Prince said that he felt like an idiot when he tried to dance for a photographer, that it didn't feel natural to do it for the camera. They actually got along pretty well except for this little exchange below, whereby Ritts learned not to play up to Prince the way he would one of his models. Prince was asked to stand on top of the baby blue piano:

Prince: Tell me if this makes you want to puke.

Ritts: You look sensational

Prince: I can change if you want.

Ritts: Instead of standing, why don't you perch on the edge of the piano and pretend you're playing the keys with the heels of your yellow shoes?

After Prince complied, Ritts continued.

Ritts: You look great! You look so sexy!

Prince: Burn those negatives (walking off the set in a huff)!

^^^Why is everyone ignoring this post?^^^

First of all, none of us were there so we don't know *how* something was said. In what context? Was Prince posing? Or was this when there were no shots being taken? All of these questions determine whether or not you think Prince acted irrationally.

But with this post I quoted above it's obvious to me that Prince stormed off saying 'burn those negatives' because he hated the shoot! It doesn't matter how much someone praises something, if you genuinely hate it and you're at your wits end with it you can end up acting like Prince did.

I don't think it had anything to do with the actual comment. That's how photographing sessions work anyway.

My opinion: He stormed out because of the *shoot*! Not the comment. He hated that particular set/photoshoot.

I agree with you, but a lot of people here always want to jump to the conclusion that Prince is always being a jerk and is in the wrong.

I said a different time period when Prince grew up...which would be the 60s.

I'm well aware of Prince's past behavior...but bringing that up has little to do with the situation. Its just another way to say "see I'm right and you're wrong." When neither you nor I know what the truth is. I simply stated my opinion on what I thought. Which is all everyone on here has stated..an opinion.

I don't know what you're talking about..."expectations of him?" I have no expectations of Prince. To do so would be foolish. I know of him, what everyone else knows of him. We can all form our OPINIONS based on what we know. And if anyone expects me to become "openminded" or "realistic" aka miserable and sit around and insult Prince and his music, then no thanks, I'd rather keep my blinders on. Negativity is not pleasureable, realistic, fair, sincere, GODLY, or fan-like. As long as people are hating on Prince, its ok. As soon as someone writes something positive, then the vultures come out. Those people quick to point a finger and call someone "ignorant," "childish," "homophobic" should really take a long hard look in the mirror..

There you have it. In context, the story is about/illustrates Prince being insecure and a diva. Not about being a homophobe like many people on this thread.

I personally do not believe the article, or that anything like that every happened between the two. I have the Vogue magazine that the shots were published in, which were the photos that ended up as the covers for the Hits/B-Sides complilation, among others. So obviously the negatives didn't get burned. With lines like, "Prince said that he felt like an idiot when he tried to dance for a photographer, that it didn't feel natural to do it for the camera" and "Tell me if this make you want to puke". Prince is VERY confident in his looks and in front of the camera, almost in an arrogant kind of way.

Honestly, babe, who gives a flying fuck if anyone did or didn't like Prince's androgyny. You're missing the point. The fact is that you are projecting your own beliefs onto Prince. You don't know his opinion. You have no clue if the event was actually true, if it ever even happened. None. But you sure come up in here with your religious zealot crap, intimating people should be afraid or offended by gay people.

We are not talking about whether androgyny is cool today. We are talking about androgyny back during Purple Rain days. If you or anyone else makes a statement like it is a fact, ya damn right i am going to call you on it. Your profile says you are 25 or so, so the fact of the matter is that you would have no fucking clue if androgyny was cool back then or not. If you stop posting opinion like it's fact, we would have nothing to say to you.

And your use of the word "retard" inly goes to further show your ignorance. That word makes people uncomfortable. maybe you ought not use it.

And yeah, anydrogeny was cool with SOME people, but NOT everyone. Are you going to proceed to tell me that EVERYBODY is ok with androgeny? Need proof? Use google and you'll find plenty of I hate Prince or Prince is gay sites. Interesting enough...I'm defending Prince on Topix right now...

Exactly!! And then insinuated or just blantantly stated that anyone who does not have a problem with someone of the same sex complimenting them should check their sexuality. That was an ignorant statement.

Didn't I say that I could be wrong? Maybe I am, I don't really care, it's just an opinion. After I read the article, I said Prince was tired, hungry, and frustrated, and maybe just tired of the shoot. BTW, the person who called Prince a "homophobic" would then also be wrong...and I don't see you telling them that they are projecting their thoughts on Prince? Whoever called Prince homophobic is thinking the same thing I am thinking..that he stormed off b/c of being called sexy. Right or wrong? So tell them the same thing. Why aren't you? Either you agree with them (which would mean you're thinking the same thing as I am), you're a hyprocrite, or you just like messing with me b/c I have different beliefs than you...

And I don't care if people had a problem with Prince! If you haven't noticed, I'm a big Prince fan. So I don't give a damn about people who hated him, just stating the obvious. And I've said plenty of times before that Lovesexy era was one of my fave looks of Prince, so obviously I don't have a problem with it.

And I didn't mention ANYTHING religious in my post..that's you assuming things. And we know what that makes you... Never have I said anything about people being afraid of gay people. Some people are though, that's just life. I'm not, but why are you so worried about it? WTF does it matter? And it is offensive if someone hits on you(gay or straight) and makes you feel uncomfortable. What's the problem here? If this were a women would you still be here? Cause I sure would be here, saying the same thing.

Stop thinking that EVERYONE is homophobic..it shows your insecurities.

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

What the fuck does that have to do with a god damn thing?

Aside from it being a completely bullshit lie.

Is that all you can say? Please! You really shouldn't reply in such a manner, you lose credibility when you imply "everyone in the world is fine with Prince dressing like a girl.." Clearly THAT statement is a BS lie!

Um, neither I nor the person you quoted said what you've got within quotes right there. So that may be a BS lie, but it wasn't told by anyone in this thread.

I said a different time period when Prince grew up...which would be the 60s. I'm well aware of Prince's past behavior...but bringing that up has little to do with the situation. Its just another way to say "see I'm right and you're wrong."

What are you suggesting I think I'm right about?

When neither you nor I know what the truth is.

Agreed.

I simply stated my opinion on what I thought. Which is all everyone on here has stated..an opinion.

I see you post things like this often, which is probably good - it's good to keep reminding yourself of that. You tend to get very hot under the collar defending your opinion.

I don't know what you're talking about..."expectations of him?" I have no expectations of Prince.

Oh good.

I understand what you're getting at, but I believe you CAN actually be open minded and realistic without being miserable and insulting.

I love Prince. I love his music. I am very positive towards him, as well as life in general. I usually don't feel the need to defend his actions (particularly when they're almost 20 years in the past) because whatever the reason was that he walked out of the shoot, it changes nothing for me.

If Herb did freak him out with his comment and he really did walk out and insist that the negatives be burnt, then I believe the act was immature. It changes nothing.

I have no interest in hating on Prince and would be quite happy for you to call me on it any time you thought I was.

Seeing people in a positive light is great. Keeping blinders/blinkers on so that someone only appears to be what you would want them to be is conditional. There's a big difference there.

For example, if it turned out that the real story is that Prince and Herb had slept together a few times, but had had a falling out the week before and things were a little bit awkward on the shoot, meaning that Herb's "so sexy" comment triggered Prince and he stormed out...would that still be ok? Would it affect how you see him? What you think of him?

(before anyone starts - yes, it's beyond unlikely and entirely baseless and is being used ONLY to make a point wink)

Again...I'm going to ask you if you're stating that EVERYONE in the 80s was cool with androgeny? That's what you're saying? Live in your dream world if you want, fool yourself if that makes you sleep at night. And my being 25 has NOTHING to do with whether I know about the 80s or not. Especially since I"m the youngest of 6 kids with my oldest sis being 40, a mother and father in their late 50s, oh and family all over the age of 40. Oh what a concept...I speak to these people about Prince and life in general. I've met PLENTY of people that dislike, even some who despise Prince. And yes some are people who were teens or adults in the 80s.

And now you're presuming to tell me what words I shouldn't use? Get over yourself ok! You have no idea what ignorance is...take a look in the mirror before you start calling names.

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol
