Not belittling you opinion but I've always found this term fairly amusing. If anyone could make music by numbers then no talent artists would be putting Purple Rain, Thriller, Born In The USA type albums everyday because the blueprint has already been laid for them. So where is all this great music that's so easy to make hiding at?
When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Had to read that twice to understand what it was you were asking. Maybe I've used the wrong term but what I meant was that nowadays he seems to produce lots of music without much due care and attention and we end up with loads of content but not much quality. Does music by numbers have a different meaning to that, then?

Yeah, i'm noticing a definite pattern to your writing style. You're writing hoping that Prince will somehow notice that you're "defending his purple honor" and thank you for it. good lord.
I shouldn't even waste my breath with you, because i know it's going to fall on deaf ears but what the hell, i'm bored at the moment.
First of all, i'm pretty sure that you and i have a different definition of "hating on someone". If i don't like 3121, in my mind that's not hating on Prince that's my opinion of the album. Now in an attempt to make this a fun/interesting place some of us might be somewhat creative in describing our dislike of an album. That IS fun. Sometimes i'll get a good chuckle from a comment.
"God's gift to music". WOW. looks like i'm not the only one that can get somewhat creative. And you CANNOT convince anyone, least of all me, that Prince ALWAYS puts his all into his music. Anyone that's listened to man as long as you claim you have, should know better than that. You can always tell when he's motivated to really let people know that he's got something left in the tank. That's how you can always tell the "Rainbow Children" & "One Nite Alone" & "Lotusflow3r" efforts from well, the rest of the crap he's put out in the last 10 years or so. I haven't even heard 20Ten and i know he half assed it. Lotusflow3r (minus the ungodly awful Bria Valente debacle) shows the kind of music Prince can make when he wants to put people on notice that he's still around and can be significant when he wants to be. 3121 and the likes are Prince's attempts to sound relevant (which usually fail miserably).
Prince gets plenty of love around this place. But to be honest, the way he treats his fanbase he for sure deserves some criticism as well. And comparing Prince's fanbase to MJ's isn't fair either. It's apples and oranges. Especially in light of MJ's recent death. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

I know what is meant though...and intact 20ten is literally by numbers in places with borrowed loops and samples

3121
But after sign o the times, P hasn't really made a consistent album, outside of the npgmc releases, I will say he still manages to create daimonds in the rough for every album, I'm sure he has the ability to make a good album if you take the gems from 3121, Planet Earth, Lotus Flower, and 20ten Theres a pretty good album, thats why we make playlists I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned

Overseeing his career IN MY OPINION he lost it in 1994, had some high points after that put never came back to the same level. And I realize that after 1994 I have been HOPING and HOPING for something good until 2007 when I gave up...

The original term "color by numbers" meant the number told you where to fill in what color. If it was that simple to make any music then anyone could do it. hey! how about this? for those of us who think Prince hasn't lost it, this is not the right thread. this one is for those who have realized he has lost it...and when. if you think he still has it, you really don't need to defend him or his music....everyone is not going to agree on everything!!!

After listening to 'Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic' November 1999. Such a disappointment after the excellent 94-96 years. it felt like he'd never release another 'amazing' album. I lost interest soon after.
The One Nite Alone tour reignited my interest in P and have enjoyed everything, (except '20TEN' sadly) since, especially the '3121' era. 3121... Don't U Wanna Come?

I just think you live to much in this so-called classic era. He never lost it, and I love a lot of his "new" stuff more than songs from the past. The "classic" era in the 80's had been determined by huge popularity of his music, that's all. Be it! Taking a risk is always an adventure.

Agreed. It's not so much about what Prince is/is not doing as it is about personal interest. One man's Lovesexy is another man's New Power Soul.
The question really should be: When was the moment that you realized you lost interest in Prince? [Edited 9/22/10 11:55am] "New Power slide...."

Exactly, I have come to a point in life and maturity where I do not call music crap unless you're are talking about so called Hip Hop today. I still consider myself a B*Boy 90% of the music I've heard today, Hip Hop that is, is not my 'flava'.
Now back to Prince: being a fan of his music and before I was a fan I was the same cat like a lot of my so called 'friends' or associates that thought he was a fag and he was puttin' out so called fag music. (being a B*Boy and all) but, when I matured and I started 'feelin'' his music and the lyrics resonated with me from Emancipation Era forward (when I became a fan) it was artist like Mr. James Brown, Sly & The Family, Bootsy, Parliment and other music my father and step-father 'hip'd' me to did I slowly make the progression over to what I like to call 'our music' that I found that P's music was my 'flava' and it tasted good to me. I do not keep with the point of view that he's lost it or Stevie Wonder has 'lost it' like one of our orgers has said or how Miles Davis 'lost it' once a musical and lyrical genius, always a musical and lyrical genius, it just may not be my flava ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Hasn't happened yet for me.
The day I lose interest in Prince would be the day I sell all my memorabillia, music and leave all the sites I'm a member of. You wouldn't have to 'formally' leave, you just wouldn't be seen there anymore. Just like how I rarely buy anything 'new'. I cannot even tell you the last album I bought.

Sorry, but that is some idealistic bullshit. Of course there's TONS of music that's "crap". And it certainly isn't restricted to "today's hip hop". Everything that's "music" isn't good or even decent. So certainly, everything that Prince has done does not fall into the category of "decent". Most of it is amazing. Some of it is most certainly "crap".
You cannot convince me that Miley Cyrus and or the Black Eyed Peas aren't crap. The former is complete crap, and the latter didn't become total crap until they decided to put Fergie in the group. They've made millions since they did that for sure, but the musical output has been disappointing to say the least.
Again, I bring up Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder. Two of the most prolific and talented artists in the history of music. HOWEVER, you cannot say that the music that they've put out in the twilight of their careers wasn't CRAP. It was. there's no other way around it. Stevie isn't a shadow of the artist he was. Neither was Miles at the end.
So we can go back and forth about whether what Prince is doing now is on par with what he's done (it's not) or you can hold him to the same standards as Miles and Stevie. Now some in here are so blinded by the kool-aid that they actually believe that Prince is the most talented artist in the history of music and has no peers. For the more sane folks, if Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis can get to a point where they "lose it" then certainly so can Prince. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

One persons point of view is not going to be the same as the next. As I said, I became a fan of Prince during the Emancipation Era so I was not aware of the cutting edge music he was putting out where people say S.O.T.T. was a album created by a genius artist or perhaps TGE as some say was a genius album. I had to go back and relive that vicariously based on conversation I've had with friends and enthusiast of P's music and lyrical content.
It's all according to one's point of view what they think is crap-ola and what isn't. I agree with you about The Black Eyed Peas. I remember when 'Joint & Jam' had my head boppin' but, they wen't commercial when Fergie joined, you got that right. Haven't bought and album of theirs since then.
We're 'there' B ... I understand your point ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Graffiti Bridge. That was his first that was not wall to wall great song to great song. I started to skip over songs on that one. Even the best like 'Theives in The Temple' I did not think were 'classic' Prince...however close. I was hearing the comedown on that CD.

this covers it for me. the name change made him seem a joke, and people still laugh about it, i don't even remember why him and mayte broke up. i just suddenly heard they were apart, she was with tommy lee and he was with the other wife who i don't even remember the name of. but when he became jw it was over

Oh and I consider myself an 'idealist' thanks for pointing that out (recognizing that). [img:$uid]http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/4.gif[/img:$uid] Isn't that what draws us to certain artist or certain types of 'art'? It's something that we see is different from the 'norm' or from the everyday 'mundane' things. Peace ... & Stay Funky ...
