The lyric indicates that (Prince thinks) Holocaust victims were better off because they died, whereas many American slaves survived only to see their bloodlines mixed with whitey.

i can see why this song caused so much debate, depending on interpretation..
maybe the romantics interpret it romantically and see it the way they want to
just as much as the socio-political-religious commentators see what they want to see as well
the only thing i have a slight discomfort about in this song is the patriarchal notion that a woman should be submissive to a man
what if she is smarter than him and he should listen to her instead of her listening to him?
i'm not sure gender is necessarily the sign post for intelligence or spiritual wisdom

i dont know if its nonsense or not cuz i dont know what Prince means by it
maybe he knows what it means and it isnt nonsense to him or maybe its deliberate nonsense cleverly placed
i can see where the argument begins in regard to the 'racist' lyrics but i honestly didnt interpret them that way
he says 'white jailbait' - not just 'whites' - which to me indicates he's referencing a stereotype of minors in a bloodmix - which isnt necessarily racist - but might in fact be an observation of fact - in a generalised sense
for me the issue is still in regard to him saying that this woman can only be queen if she submits to the 'pharaoh'...
but we dont know who the pharaoh is, or if he's worth submitting to...
i like to think of relationships as a partnership where neither gender dominates the other
but they bring their own virtues to the relationship and do what each does best
without either of them vying for top dog position.
guess i'm surprised Prince would take that angle, if thats what he means, considering his own experiences with submission and how it made him feel.

i agree with him here, a song about a biblical story with a few of his own thoughts thrown in isnt as powerful as the bigger story of what happens when either party thinks they can read the other's mind
Muse 2 the Pharaoh may well be the result of a night of Bible study with some of his own commentary added, simple as that with nothing more to it, i dont know.
i still like Muse cuz the music is so nice, but i think the whole 'playing the queen' thing can be a big mistake if the intentions behind it are selfish, and even more of a mistake if the Pharaoh aint worth it

I love Muse 2 The Pharaoh, as I do the whole album.
The love story is my favourite aspect of the work, and, although I'm sure it offers some insight into what Prince himself is looking for, I've never thought that was the main text of the story.
That said, my personal belief is that it describes the union between Jesus and Mary Magdalene and, given that no organised religion that I know of acknowledges such a union, I wouldn't suggest that's what Prince intended, but, like any artist, you don't get to pick how your fans interpret your work
What I do love about his indirect and sometimes very obscure lyrics is that, even after years of loving the album, I still search for more meaning which expands my own spiritual understanding along the way. Ironic, perhaps, given that the man offering inspiration to a boundless spiritual journey is the one (possibly?
In any case, this thread led me to search more about the Moses/Egypt connection, which led me to theories about Jesus being one in the same with Tutankhamun, who married Ankhesenamun, who is regarded by some to be the true Magdalene. So was Mary Magdalene really the Pharaoh's muse, who later, through her understanding of God, became queen?

Personally, I think the misinterpretation here is of the word 'holocaust', which has biblical meanings and, in fact, is regarded in some circles to be a disrespectful term for what happened to the Jews at the hands of the Nazis given that it has a sacred meaning in the Old Testament (http://cantuar.blogspot.c...caust.html).
I think Ankhesenamun was right on this one (the orger, not the...well, you know) - those lines refer to the JW interpretation of the Book of Revelations - nothing to do with WWII.
Being sold in this case imo refers to something beyond man's trade (but one that was perhaps in part facilitated by the slave trade); ie. if it was more than your body, rather your entire being, that was on the line, presumably then you'd rather a righteous death than to lose your soul to the 'Big Bad'.
As for NATO/Aten, I don't think so - it's unlikely to be an endorsement of a man-made political/military organisation by likening it to God, but more likely a reference to OTAN, a serpent deity said to be connected to "The Beast" (*long* explanation for the really keen - http://www.lasttrumpetmin...e2004.html).

I love the song on lots of different levels, and I enjoy that it (like all of TRC and lots of his other work) can be a catalyst for discussion and learning, but ultimately it was probably a mix of somewhat fixed and transient beliefs that held particular interest for Prince at the time and as interesting as it can be to look at and ponder on, it's certainly not worth investing much emotion into the process (unless it's the lovely gooey emotion that one might feel whilst listening to it *sigh*
