Prince has yet to loose anything..

What a silly question.. he is a musical genius who works on what he wants, when he wants to.

Musicology was the first Prince album where I didn't really care for a single track. It's not that it's awful or anything, but every Prince album before that had at least one genius moment. 3121 solidified it for me. His output from Musicology onwards has been so predictable and safe. For better or worse at least he was still trying new things in the 90s. Say what you will about albums like Emancipation, but at least he was still interested in experimenting with new sounds and dabbling in different genres a little.

I don't think I've heard a single Prince song from the 00's which has surprised me.

Yeah, i went there.

Emancipation / 1996 was when I got my 1st Prince album disappointment:

I like this pop album today,

but after the funk masterpiece of The Gold Experience.. Emancipation was a huge letdown, imo.

i listen to emancipation a lot more than TGE (yes, there is a lot more to choose from, so its not a fair comparison). i wouldnt call TGE a funk masterpiece though. maybe somebody could be the 1st to reproduce an album (emancipation) because it is spoilt by the ametuerish keyboard and drum sounds.

my moment used to be when i heard 'hundelasiliah", but i have come to appreciate his stuff from symbol album onwards. he couldnt just go on churning out funk grooves with a linn drum(wheel turned full circle - 20ten?). between these periods it seems prince struggled with musical identity.

Would he still be a genius to you if, for the next 5 years, he released albums each year of him farting?

If the answers yes then the questions irrelevant...because you're applying 'genius' to his past work and therefore, whatever he does you'll still be holding on to his passed glories...like us

I noticed in the record store before I even got the album home. I had searched all over that record store looking for the new Prince album not knowing that I had walked right past it three or four times. I finally went and got the record clerk that I had known for years and she walked me over to it right on the same wall that all the new R&B releases had been on for years.

When she handed me the album, I said "This hippie looking shit is the new Prince album!?". She laughed and said "Wait till you hear it". I said "Oh Lord, I hope Purple Rain crossing over didn't ruin him. Please don't tell me we've got another Lionel Richie now". She said "No, another John Lennon". I laughed and thought to myself "This bitch is crazy". I got the album home and put the needle on the record and saw she wasn't crazy. I wanted to sling that damn album up against the wall. lol

Personally I don't think he has lost it at all. However the moment he lost his "fire" I would say was Lovesexy. From Dirty Mind to that album each was progressive, interesting, original, but also cool and fun. Lovesexy was good, but it was the 1st time I felt he was kind of spinning his wheels, and some of the songs sounded half finished or rushed. I was going to say 1985 as well, with ATWIAD, however he seriously rebounded with Parade and SOTTs.

I think he said it himself after Lovesexy, he had nothing left to prove.

I actually love that album from start to finish but I know it's not a fave for a lot of his fans beacuase of the drastic change is his sound from Purple Rain.

If you don't, then why are you still here really? And don't give me the "b/c I can" crap answer. That's a copout! You're here because you're addicted to the man like the rest of it, you just hate to admit it. And criticizing him somehow justifies being here, since you really think he's crap but you stay anyway. Like that makes any sense whatsoever!! Or perhaps you really are just so miserable in life that you feel the need to criticize someone else's gift? Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

Prince is a genius and everything he does is purely and simply amazing!! Every single song he has ever put out at least somebody likes it, so it has succeeded in showcasing his brillance!

I'm here because I love SOME of Princes music, Like SOME of Princes music and can't stomach SOME of Princes music. A lot of people loved The Ketchup Song too...is that genius ? I'm not addicted to Prince in the slightest...I just cone on here because I know I share at least one interest (not addiction, not obsession) with others here. It would be a boring world if all debate was one-sided

I totally get that not everything he does is genius to everybody...but one person's trash is another person's treasure. For instance, the song Chocolate Box I love it!! Alot of other fans hate it. Does it automatically make it trash? No, so to state it like it's trash is just wrong and demeaning to Prince. There are alot of songs that I don't care for, but I don't state them as being trash because someone else may see them as pure genius work. And I think we can all agree Prince is a genius right? So how can he lose it? And if we're supposed to be fans, shouldn't we be showing some love? That's all I'm saying . It just seems like more hate is spread thru this site than love, which is quite disturbing. To see it from hate and fan sites is really sad. Prince doesn't deserve it. He's a great musician that has blessed the world for 30yrs with his gift. If he stopped because of all this hatred, people would be highly upset. Maybe that's what the haters want? sad

First of all, "because I can" is the perfect answer and you can say it's a copout and that's your opinion. I'm going to assume that you're referring to another Prince fan that seems to have your panties all in a bunch, and not me. Because i'm not on here that much lately. I only post on things that seem somewhat interesting, which is a rare occasion these days mostly due to people like YOU.

This site used to be a place where Prince fans of all ages and in all stages could come and reminisce, discuss and yes debate various topics regarding the man that obviously all brought us here. It used to be a fun place.

Yeah, i went there.

[Edited 9/16/10 10:09am]

Yeah it should be a FUN place. How is hating on someone fun? I can see discussing if one thinks he's lost it or not, but the OP was basically stating it as fact. And for some people it ain't fact. I'm not a new Prince fan, been one for 22 almost 23yrs. So I've been through most of the ablums first hand. And yes everyone can have varying opinions on songs, but to constantly hate on him, why stay if he can't do anything right? Is it just to insult the fans that consistently think he is GOD's gift to music? Call me what you want, I am a Prince fan and think every ablum he's put out has AT LEAST 3-5 great songs on them because he is a musical genius and still puts his all into his music. Maybe you don't, and that's fine. But all I'm saying is can we show some love around this place? Geez! If this were my biggest fan site and I signed on here, I'd say to hell with the so called "fans!" I've seen better post about Prince on MJ's board! And that's saying something!

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

I think that's the crux of the problem right there. These purple Kool-aid drinkers were bugging me as well, but I'm actually beginning to see their point: If, instead of:

"When was the moment you realized that Prince had lost it"

this thread was instead called:

"Think Prince lost it? When?"

the tone might have not gotten everybody's backs up; 'cause it's not stating that Prince has 'lost it' as fact.

Absoloutely.perhaps the thread title doesn't quite match the replies. He hasn't lost it I suppose...it's mote hedoesnt bring what a lot of people miss to the table that often anymore. For me. He changed everything about him around NPS. until that point 'my' Prince was consistent...but since then I've only seen flashes of that Prince.

I guess that's what I was referring to. But you're absoloutely right - with the exception of 1 song I could throw ONA in the bin (but I sold it for £80 instead) but to many it's pure gold (hopefully the guy who bought it for £80 is in that group)

He hasn't lost it but he does make music by numbers and as of late, it's a case of sifting through a mountain of sh*t just to find the 1 or 2 decent tracks on each album.
