Simple question. When was the moment when you realized that Prince had lost his ability to make masterpieces, that his muse was gone from him? When did you realize that his "classic era" was over?

The moment he recorded Baby Go-Go, man that was a smelly turd of biblical proportions...

He was doing the wobbly voice since the 90s. Just need to pull out any performance of Mary Don't You Weep, Johnny, Insatiable, etc

I'm talking about the voice that sounds like a teenager going through puberty...On The Couch, Planet Earth...it was actually insatiable that made me realise how blunt his falsettos are now compared to that song

You're talking about the verses from "Call My Name" kind of thing?

"Never SA-w thE mOOn lOOkin' so lovely as the night I saw it with you."

That exactly what I'm talking about but, because I can't listen to them, I can never remember titles when it's example time

The Purple Medley.

It was the first time in my life I'd found myself completely unable to defend one of Prince's crazy-ass moves. There have been many such occasions since.

I still love the brother, but the Purple Medley was the moment that I fully realized that Prince is, really, just a regular dude.

Emancipation / 1996 was when I got my 1st Prince album disappointment:

I like this pop album today,

but after the funk masterpiece of The Gold Experience.. Emancipation was a huge letdown, imo.

First off, GORGEOUS pic of Prince. Loved his look during these days, he was irresistable!! Ok, I totally get what you're saying. I wasn't dissapointed, I just had to digest the difference. Much like I have to do with alot of his stuff, because it is so different sometimes. But still equally as good. I loved Emancipation from the beginning really. Some songs had to grow on me though!

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Surely that wasn't anything more than a tour memento...that's what the label said here in the UK.

Which reminds me...a whole new depths of lost it were those hideous looking and no doubt rash inducing pillowcases on sake at the 21 nights gigs....or even that brochure for the Dorchester hotel he pedalled under the guise of a photo documentary

Funny, when a person matures and goes in other directions, suddenly they have "lost it". I just can't believe, all the things people say!

Perhaps when many of his fans mature, they will understand where he is going now. wink

ChaosDisorder

The release of Emancipation was the turning point for me. He had seemingly gone through a rebirth from 93-95, and he & the NPG were almost like this underground sensation, playing crazy late night shows, recording wild and adventurous albums, and just being this tight, amazing unit. The Gold Experience was everything I had hoped it would be, despite the omissions of "Days Of Wild", "Interactive", and a couple others. And then, he fell in love and all of that energy, hostility, and fury was suddenly gone. Emancipation was the antithesis to everything he'd done the previous 3 years, and he's never really regained that edge since. Everything from that point on has been safe, sterile, and predictable, despite the fact that I like some of his recent output, Lotusflower and most of Planet Earth in particular.

I don't belive he's lost his talent, but I believe he has lost direction at times.

Diamonds and Pearls was a huge artistic misstep ,IMO, though it was a commercial success and has some decent songs.

"dolphin" was interesting for me.

Really great sounding, performance, passionate, I think it could have been a huge single. If it weren't for the lyrics...

if i were a dolphin...you could cut off all my fins but to your ways i would not bend...

And that was the chorus!

Oh, man. Such potential! Such a great song! But so crazy! Cutting the fins off a dolphin! It sounds like he was going for deep, thought provoking, and meaningful, but he landed on unintentionally funny, and kind of gross.

Anyway, this was my first clue. Before 'dolphin' there was the awesome, and the lame, mostly kept separate. But 'dolphin' was awesome, with a thick layer of lame on top. Simultaneous. Which is kind of how things started going.

i don't really think he lost it, because alot of his music from 88-lotus flower are memorable and can be recited be fans from memory. he never lost it. The world of music lost it, people went in another direction and lost focus of real music. it was us who should've payed more attention.

I'm sick and tired of making plans without making up my mind, teacher teacher can't u see I just need a little time.

My thoughts exactly. I was disappointed by Batman, worried after Grafitti Bridge, and once hip hop was embraced by the man, I knew the glory days were over.

Since when does criticizing someone's output equal thinking they are untalented?
