The only people benefiting from sales in Europe are Europeans who sell on Ebay. Looks like that helps a dead internet company collect commissions on the secondary market of which Prince sees zero dollars.
So the Internet is dead. Prince was getting ripped off by record companies. Now he is getting ripped off by a dead entity.
On a high note, as the Euro was in trouble all year up until now, maybe this will be a sort of stimulus for their economy. Americans pay Europeans (through ebay or other outlets) for the free new Prince record. I just paid 6 dollars on ebay for mine. Let's see: 5 million papers in circulation, plus one free Prince record per paper, times that by 6 bucks (and that was the cheapest--some are selling for 10 bucks), and you get a $30,000,000 stimulus package for Europe donated by Prince. Did the record come out in Greece and Spain? Cause then Prince is a frikking hero.
Ps. to my benefit, the 6 bucks I paid (that includes international shipping-score!) is still cheaper than target would have charged. So that's a little retribution for my 77 dollars thrown into the lotusfire
Pss. I know some (most) of you Americans got it free on various dead internet sites already, but come on. You fools know you're gonna buy the hard copy one way or another. And all I'm saying is as greedy as Prince is, you would think he would have taken advantage of that fact. I wish u heaven

I don't know about me purchasing it. I may just rip this and repeat FSS.

It is my understanding that the newspapers who distribute the albums are the ones picking up the tab for the pressing of the albums. This would mean Prince churns out 10 tracks in his sleep (good or bad, he can do that with relative ease) and has his in-house art team draw up some artwork.
He just made half a mil with next to no effort.
He would've had to sell upwards of a million copies to make that same amount while going through normal channels. Given that he only cares about money at this stage in his life, it is his best avenue. It does not, however, pay any respect to fans in general... Or much respect to his art in general.

How do u know he made a half a mil? I wish u heaven
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I don't, that's just one of the figures tossed around for it.
Regardless of that fact, though, he has boasted about how much more he makes from the upfront advance than from a system of royalties.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yep I've noticed that. It's never from royalties from said albums. I mean he gives up albums to get money because he feels if he puts them out normally he wouldn't get the advance pay, that's why he's probably turning down labels and online stores.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
He just doesn't believe that these businesses have any reason to properly account for the money being made from the albums. I think Prince thinks his fan base is bigger than it is and more willing to buy his half-baked material than it is.
When Prince was on Tavis talking about his skepticism as to how much Purple Rain really sold I just shook my head.

I downloaded the leak. I always download the leak of any musician I like and then buy the cd when it comes out. Even buy it in vinyl if it is available.

We don't all have mp3's. The magazine that comes free with the Saturday edition of the Daily Record, gets delivered to newsagents 1-2 days early every week. My friend simply asked the newsagent to sell her a copy of the magazine. I got mine last night (Thurs).

Can you hold the back of the CD sleeve up so we can see the correct track order? If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Compassion Beginning Endlessly Future Soul Song Sticky Like Glue Act Of God Lavaux Walk In Sand Sea Of Everything Everybody Loves Me
And on track 77 'Laydown'
Hope this is of help to you?

But .. those downloading today are probably already fans of the man, no? Or at least bothered enough to seek out the mp3's.
The news paper deal might be ridiculous to fans (I mean, that's fine Prince .. but could you perhaps hire a company, say Warners, to make the a deluxe-something-something-version, launching the same day as the paper gets out?), but as a tool to crowbar your way into the homes of Prince-phobes and the Prince oblivious, I think it's a cool idea. I mean, my mum would never bother to find a link on the net (and she's probably in total ignorance about Prince), but if she'll get a free cd, she'll spin it at least once .. and maybe she'll like it enough to seek out other Prince stuff?
I dunno. None of us really know what Prince's goal was (Money? Promotion for concerts? Promotion for sales of the back cataloge? "Giving to the people" like the Jehova son? Something else?), and because of that, it's impossible to conclude if he's failed.

scotland has a tradition of selling single fags to schoolkids who can't afford the whole packet of 10, and glue and lighter gas to teenagers, and bottles of strong cider to preteens. your stereotype image of scotland being a bunch of fat drunken bastards who won't eat anything unless it's deep fried is only part of our image. if you go to ingleston or the barras you can get any movie on dvd before it's out in the cinema. beat that hollywood

I live in Denmark, so instead of paying for this album I downloaded it from the dead internet, from a filesharing site, found by using simple google search terms.
I buy digital music all the time. But I couldn't buy this one because Prince doesn't really give a fuck about general distribution as long as he gets enough money to feel satisfied, and that's clearer than ever, so I just took it.
Couldn't buy it if I wanted to, and I did. So I just found it for free. Spreading heavy funk since 2008: theheaviestfunkintheworld.wordpress.com

Some nice people sent me a link (that unfortunately didnt work for me), but in the end someone who asked me for a link first that I could not provide sent me a working link, which in return I sent to about 20 people!
The internet is not dead, even from a music business standpoint. Prince is one of the few lucky people in the major label music industry (the mega-star) that actually made a significant amount of money from record sales, because most of them don't. Records were originally just promotional tools for the live show. They later became more than that when the record companies realized that THEY could make actual money of the things. A combination of methods is the future. Give some recordings away on the internet, sell some recordings on the net and in shops, and realize that just like in the good ol days before the internet you still wont be getting paid everything you deserve.

I'll have both camps yelling at me on this one, but I think despite Prince's statement being completely ignorant, using newspapers to distribute his music is a great idea.
Remember, Prince shouldn't be thinking about making a quick profit right now (though we suspect that's probably what he mostly thinks about anymore ), but he should be concentrating on growing his market---introducing the "Prince" brand so to speak to a new group of listeners. Where he sold over 100,000 some odd copies (I'm not sure of the total number) in the first week of Lotusflow3r, he'll have 20Ten distributed to 2.5 million in the UK alone in one day. This obviously is no indication of the customer's interest in even trying the new product, but I suspect much more than 100,000 are going to give it at least one spin. Newspapers are the youtube videos HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN USING FOR YEARS to get the message out that he's still alive to some folks.
However, there's just no way our boy is going to be able to stay away from the Internet. If it isn't placed on the web by him, it's placed on the web by someone else for free. All he has to do to siphon a good number of potential theirs is release a kickass album, great cover art, and offer it for quick and easy download.
Most of the folks reading this would gladly download a special edition of 20Ten on iTunes with additional artwork--the dead internet could make the guy a lot of money.
