Last night I got a knock on my door...

got outta the tub to answer and Prince was standing there...

So he looks at me and says, "Hi, I want to share something with you..."

I invite him in and we go sit on my couch. I offer him a beer which he accepts. He proceeds to take off his ear cuff and then he looks me dead in my eyes...

"I want you to play this and tell me what you think..." and he hands me an LP... I'm thunderstruck!! I haven't seen one of these in like 6 years (since I ripped all my albums to disc) omg

I gently put it on my USB Turntable and proceed to listen... I say, "Wow, this really is quite nice"

Prince knocks back the beer and gets up to leave, he opens the door and turns to me...

"Thanks..." he whispers. Then he gets on his Segway and rolls away...

I THOUGHT HIS METHOD WAS AWESOME!!! woot!

I still remember the time when I smirked and shook my head in disbelief when Prince planned to distribute Crystal Ball through Paisley Park and a handful of retailers like Best Buy. Although the ordering and shipping process proved ineffective and a nightmare for fans, he still managed to (1) get the money and (2) get the last laugh. You gotta admire that.

Umm, I was actually happy he was trying to be truly independent. I wish he would REALLY give it a try again. However, the distribution of Crystal Ball was one of the biggest disasters of his career. It was AWFUL waiting for/trying to get that album.

Well...

That one dude posted about getting a copy early from a news vendor. He even posted his picture with the disc and box art. Then about an hour later he probably uploaded the album to Rapidshare. Then we received links to download a copy of the album. But I must stress that this isn't the album. The album has cover art and the official disc.

How's that?

Errr. What? For those who purchased it in Europe with a periodical, yes, it is. For those of us listening to those downloaded MP3s, yes, it is. lol The songs, as far as we know, won't be any different if the album is distributed in the States. Putting cover art and a piece of plastic on it won't change the songs.

You missed the point of my statement. Do you really think having 10 mp3's is equivalent to having the actual cover art/package/disc? I don't. I guess you like pirated games on DVD-R too, right?

I still don't get the point of your statement. And adding some passive aggressive nonsensical question that has nothing to do with what we're talking about on the end just makes you look foolish. I've never played a pirated game on a DVD-R in my entire life, have you? lol

No, it's not the equivalent, and I've already stated elsewhere in one of the threads relating to the new album that I will buy it if it's made available. Unfortunately, it's not. I live in American and I CAN'T BUY the new Prince album. But I can download and listen to the EXACT SAME songs that are on the supposedly official version released through European periodicals. So really, what is your point? Are you saying we shouldn't listen to the MP3s? Are you saying that the experience is somehow lessened because I don't have a piece of plastic and the LIMITED artwork he's included on recent releases? I'm not trying to be a dick, I just really don't understand what you're getting at.

As far as I know there is no CD for me to get. If Prince was as good a business man as he thinks he is he would have worked out a way to release this thing in the US at the same time. Whatever. He got his pay in advance. So when he gets around to releasing it in the States, I'll buy it. But contrary to what he thinks, the interent ain't dead. So for now I'ma listen to it anyway.

What is YOUR point? You said that mp3's are the same as owning the album. I pointed out that for collectors, it is NOT. You also don't have to wait for the US release, you can get the actual album on EBAY or from a friend who bought the paper. Don't confuse mp3's with owning the actual album. It's the same as if you were playing a copied game on a DVD-R. Sure, you're playing the game, but you don't own anything of true value.

The internet is dead as far as an artist making any real money from selling their music. You may like iTunes, but they keep the lion's share of the profit, so why should Prince deal with them? He can make money up front distributing it another way. You can still get your "copy" from downloading mp3's. If anyone is losing money, it's iTunes. Screw them, they're basically worthless anyway.

I made my point VERY clearly. Several of them, actually. But you're choosing to ignore all of them. Yes, OBVIOUSLY there's no value to an MP3. I mean, it's only the way most people buy their music these days. confused Should I even point out that I DIDN'T say owning MP3s was the same as owning the album, only that it's the same music? Siiigh. Buh-bye now. wave

Of course it's the SAME music, but it's a copy of an official product. That's the point that's going over your head.

He could've simultaneously opened a webstore and sold product directly to the public. Doing so would satisfy the needs of fans who want a physical CD but don't reside in the UK or Europe.

Him only releasing this to selected countries is in my opinion not good business? I think he hasn't quite figured out how he's gonna get away with this format? He tried it with "Planet Earth" and ended up putting it out in the states without much thought into promotion. I think it was only sold to Target ("Planet Earth") or maybe I'm mistaken Prince for another artist who sold their CD straight from Target. How is only selling it to the UK, Portugal, Belgium and Germany exactly innovative? Don't get me wrong, I can see he wants to see what sticks but if he did it all over the world, then maybe that's when we'll see the innovation. But doing it in selected countries is not gonna cut it. Plus we don't know how he's gonna release this in America, in other European countries, in Asia, in Australia? That is if he really cares about all of his fans who don't have the privelege to see his shows? Prince should've planned this thoroughly then he could drive his point home that he could do this and it will be a positive benefit. So far, all these things he has done in trying to sell his music is not working. And on top of that you got frustrated Prince fans in the world who don't understand why Prince is so silent on how he wanna put the album out in other countries? We'll see what he plans to do if he indeed plans to release the album all over the world, not just America.

I can say that at least here in Belgium (in Brussels) it seems to have been very successfull , both for the newspaper as well as for Prince.

At 10 am this morning, I had to go to 5 newsstands before I could find the newspaper and CD. All the four other bookstores were already sold out! Lucky I was even able to find a newsstand that still had the CD!

Listening to the CD right now smile and happy with the knowledge that in a few hours I will be leaving for the concert...biggrin

Oh and the price was 1,6€ for the newspaper including the CD. So from the perspective of the fan , it works out GREAT too!

The newspapers are happy (cuz they're sold out), Prince is happy (he gets his advance payment and then probably some more) and I'm very happy! It's a win-win-win!

Album Art Exchange already has the high-res cover artwork available for 20Ten, for those of you who already have it. Here is the link.

Again, this is for COVER ARTWORK only - this site does not host music files or links in any way.
