I think giving them away in newspapers/magazines/chinese takeaway menus is the way forward. The last 4 years for me works out as:

Planet Earth - Free with the Daily Bile

Indigo Nights - £15 & included a free, glossy hotel brochure

Lotusflow3r - Wasn't released in the UK, was only available on overpriced import, so is fair game to be downloaded as far as I'm concerned. Plus it came with 2 pretty coasters.

20Ten - Free with the Beano.

I really can't complain. Thanks yoda!

I have to say, I'm feeling a little smug satisfaction reading these posts, particularly after I copped abuse for downloading Lotusflow3r because there was no Australian release. cool

Something about the shoe being on the other foot?

I think Confucius once said, "It is easy to be righteous when one is holding a CD". ....or words to that effect. wink

I have it on good authority the Mirror's circulation 'only' went up by 330K for that issue in England, so I wonder if they actually made a profit on distributing 20Ten.

Not that it concerns me if a newspaper makes a profit of course... just wondering if it might have an impact on future 'giveaways' ...

I found mine in my skip (I got renovators at the moment)

As for the method, well, the printing press has the most longevity of media and still going strong today.

It could almost be like going back to the 'dark ages', but hey, sometimes you have to take 1 step backward to move 2 steps forward...

"The Internet is dead." More like Prince is dead. Just because his Internet sites were a failure doesn't mean the Internet is dead. I'm glad he didn't release this thru iTunes because it would have tanked anyway. Heard it on the net anyway. This new album is DOA. No wonder it's free. He should pay me for listening to it. A step back-- many steps backwards-- from Lotusflower/MPLS. Wake up Prince!

I wish I had been sent a link, I just wasted 65p ona pile of crap somebody said was a newspaper.

So... you didn't like this album? lol

It was pants first skip through.

Second listen grew, third and fourth got some favorites but pretty bored with it already. But I am not bitching, I also have some excellent fire lighting material for my 65p.

so the paper isn't shrink wrapped and it's the mag that is wrapped, the mail on sunday was completely wrapped up with pe.

cool

no it wasn't. for PE, the CD was wrapped in the same way as 20ten, shrinkwrapped in a bag with the telly mag etc, and shipped to stores on the saturday, and on the sunday the paper was delivered seperately. that's usually how they do it with the weekend papers and supplements. the supplements are done in advance and sent in advance, the papers are done seperately so they can print... well, not news in the case of the papers we are discussing, more scandal and make up crap, but they have to get the latest photos from the paps like upskirts of drunken popstarts falling into taxis. if they didn't have to do that they could just print the sunday papers on a tuesday

i still have one or two copies of MOS shrinkwrapped with PE somewhere

well mine was wrapped.

cool

actually i still have the MOS telly mag sealed and no cd inside, so it looks like the whole thing was sealed with a cd and then the mags in another bag. nice and environmentally friendly to suit an album called planet earth

Does Prince owe any of us any kind of explanation? No.

He does not owe anyone a explanation on his method of distrubution not sure why or how we got so many clueless people on the org. eek Dude is making it plain that he is going to Get paid for his work and does not give a crap about what the public thinks. This CD was going to be illegally downloaded no matter how it was distributed and everybody on this board knows it.

I have spoken with 3 seperate newsagents this morning regarding the free cd. All 3 mentioned that there has been no where near the same demand for 20TEN as there was for Planet Earth..............interesting.

I knew it was kinda too good to be true. It sounds nice on "paper". lol and maybe folks who were initially excited after learning PE was gonna be sold to papers were all optimistic then they heard it and was possibly turned off, which could explain the not-so excited feel of this album's release.

What is your point!!! Do you not understand that he got paid upfront just as he would have from a traditional record company and not at all if he worked with ITUNES.

Like some German and Austrian fans I today bought the German "Rolling Stone"- I for myself in Vienna, Austria at a local newsstand for 7 Euro 50 Cent. The method is good: the CD is cheaper than normal CDs availabe in the record stores, but these method is only working for artists who aren´t interested in money. And nowadays...

The internet is not dead: just think of all these sites for commercial and other purposes it is used for(love, sex, shopping, communication), with all it´s (positive and negative) consequences for the users.
