Prince's newspaper release
Prince has decided to release his latest album 20ten through the Belgium newspaper Het Nieuwsblad on July 10th and the August edition of Germany’s Rolling Stone.
This will not be the first time that Prince has launched a free CD included in a newspaper. In 2007, he infuriated the music industry by releasing Planet Earth through the Daily Mail in the UK.
In a 2007 music conference, ERA co-chairman Paul Quirk said of the release, “It would be an insult to all those record stores who have supported Prince throughout his career. It would be yet another example of the damaging covermount culture which is destroying any perception of value around recorded music. The Artist Formerly Known as Prince should know that with behaviour like this he will soon be the Artist Formerly Available in Record Stores.”
Undaunted by the music industry’s outrage, Prince went ahead with plans and released the album to worldwide success. It didn’t seem to be a detriment to his career, as Prince won BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Los Angeles this Sunday.
20ten will not have a regular release in those countries where there is a newspaper publication, but Warner Bros. will distribute the 10-track album everywhere else. Other European newspaper releases may follow, and Prince has reportedly discussed alternative releases with Warner Bros.
