What the hell is "complex" about his vibrato? He sounded nervous and tired to me. His performance was really terrible. I mean no disrespect to him or his talent, I'm not that familiar with him. But his performance of "Purple Rain" was embarrassing.

I took complex vibrato to mean that one doesn't absolutely know what to make of it because of the complexitivity. It was vibrato, but it was also kinda like a hyena laughing , or herd goat sound. It was complex to dycipher. Thats how I feel.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

He sings with a very complex vibrato which can sound hideous live over an electric sound system.

Translation: Dude can't hold a note, so he has to do some phony baloney to make people think his singing is "complex."

Despite the antics, that Janelle Monae girl can really sing. I thought she did a good job with Let's go crazy.

My introduction to her was last night and now the song you just posted. And while I think...THINK...she can at least sing (meaning she can harmonize and carry a good tune)...she's singing the WRONG ass songs...to make me want to give a fuck about that...in the least little bit!

Does she have something of her OWN that works with her obvious vocal ability...that can make me...a total newbie to WHO she is...forget and FORGIVE...those WACK FUCKING ASS renditions of "Let's Go Crazy" and "Smile"? confuse

Oh and the fact that she dresses like she did last night anyway and that actually wasn't a part of her TRIBUTE to Prince...is a plus! thumbs up!

Jeezus Hatrina... lol First my friend, read this article. She is making the rounds and getting the exposure she deserves by the media now. That exposure on BET, opened the curiosity of those at that event who wasn't familiar with her also. Now according to this article, she was the #1 trending topic on Twitter worldwide yesterday. I remember when she was first signed to Diddy, and when my son filmed her for an interview she did with one of his friends, back in 2008 for Diddy, to promote her. She also explains in the article why she dresses a certain way at times, in a uniform and what it represents to her. Anyway, it seems her career is really taking off, since the buzz that Prince is one of her supporting fans. I don't think she'll be needing your approval of her fantastic creative, music skills, but just thought I'd share this info with you, so you can get an idea of some of her influences and inspirations. Enjoy! biggrin

Prince Pick Janelle Monae Covers The King of Pop Too

Copyright 2010 Fredrick Brown / Getty Images

By Carolyn Richardson

In seven days, 25-year-old Janelle Monae, a rock & soul princess, has risen from seeming obscurity to taking on The King of Pop's rumored favorite song "Smile" and Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" -- two colossal songs that helped define their respective eras. With her electrifying performances of each, her talent ensures she won't be letting the elevator bring her down anytime soon.

The first song, Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," was featured on Billboard's Mashup Mondays last week with an intimate live performance of the song, with Monae's sultry voice only accompanied by soulful electric guitar. While many first learned of her unique style and James Brown-esque dance moves during her "Let's Go Crazy" tribute to Prince at last night's BET Awards, she has already amassed accolades for her own music.

Her first album release, Metropolis: The Chase Suite, included "Many Moons," which garnered a Grammy nod in 2009. She's even touched "American Idol," as the 2009 finale featured "Open Happiness," an inspirational song co-written by Monae. With the momentum that she continues to gain, a Grammy win may be in order with last month's release of her second album, The ArchAndroid, with its lead single "Tightrope" carrying a dance that is as entertaining and infectious as Michael Jackson's Moonwalk. A master in the studio and on stage, the singer/songwriter has shared the same stage as mega stars No Doubt, Erykah Badu, Lupe Fiasco and is currently on tour with Of Montreal. She's also firing up the tube, having appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman," "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "The Mo'Nique Show."

Hers was a busy weekend. On Friday, she received the Vanguard Award at the 23rd Annual ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Awards, which recognizes songwriters whose impact of musical genres helps shape the future of American music. Prince was a surprise guest at the ceremony in support of Monae, and she acknowledges he has inspired her. During her acceptance speech, she shared that her trademark tuxedo is worn in homage to her parents who were low-wage workers who worked in sanitation. She calls herself a "supporter of imagination who takes risks so that others can take risks." Having roots stemming from a childhood in Kansas City, Kansas, an arts education in New York City, and stardom that began in Atlanta, Georgia, Monae is more than well-traveled.

Something tells me, however, with the buzz she is continuing to get, she'll be traveling much more often in her future to share her ArchAndroid tunes with the world. Apparently, I'm not the only one who thinks so. She's been featured in Vogue and will appear in InStyle's July 2010 issue. Yesterday, Monae was the No. 1 worldwide trending topic on Twitter!

But if you want to check out more by her you can go to www.janellemonae.com

Yes, I have the heart to say that his tribute was shitty and Prince obviously agrees. Lacking morally? falloff

Anyway, he wasn't even a part of the tribute. Prince hand-picked Janelle, Patti, Alicia and Esperanza to perform that's all. Trey chose to put 'Purple Rain' in his performance for some odd reason.

LOOOL (IF you laugh more it makes it seem like its the truth)

Its odd for Trey to sing a bit of purple rain ON A NIGHT THAT TRIBUTES prince? Im not dealing with you your actually an idiot and Im not even saying it to be rude.

Trey sang Purple Rain because the song he was singing samples Purple Rain. He probably choose is specifically because they were honoring Prince. Highly doubt Prince requested Trey to sing the song knowing he was having Patti sing it.

Because of their half-baked mistakes, we get ice cream, no cake; all lies, no truth; is it fair to Kill the YOUTH ~~ Party Up

Because Prince prefers female vocalists.

And also probably because he doesn't want to risk a male singer performing a song of his better than he has or can. razz

Maxwell would've cleaned house if he was given Adore or Do Me Baby.

Yeah, ladies would have lost their minds if Maxwell came out there on Adore or Do Me Baby and it would have subsequently (if not intentionally) become all about Maxwell.

I just watched the tribute and thought it was incredibly weak. I guess he got what he wanted but I would have loved to see the likes of Mint Condition up there really doing up Housequake or something fun. Id have even dug the Raheem Devaughn cover of I would die for you more than what we got. Ah well.

Reel, I hear what you're saying. You could see quite a few influences in her performances, that she molded together and made her own. I like that she takes risks, especially in this hip-hop driven music industry these days. It's refreshing to see something a bit different for a change.

Okay, lol but I also was just sharing info about a performer whose talent you questioned, and was just sharing an article about her which focused on her influences, inspirations, and a gave a little info on her background and accomplishments. I just thought it was cool, that this new artist was trending number one, worldwide on Twitter. Also, it was nice to see El sing those classics at the award show. I'm not surprised he was googled, because I'm sure many of his fans were happy to see him make an appearance on national tv, singing his classics. Although he's been performing locally, over the years, many haven't seen him on tv for a while, and I'm sure he gained new fans last night from that performance. However, I give Janelle props also, as a new artist, now getting more media exposure than before, and the fact that she has the support of a music legend, Prince, who is one of her inspirations.

Yes, I watched her amped up impersonations of Prince, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Grace Jones, Andre Benjamin, Erykah Badu and Rapheal Saadiq, which was cool and all but no where near as mind blowing nor memorable...as any one of them...individually! So I'm still just not seeing the attraction, I'm really not. shrug
