Wow... I kept thinking I was watching The Gong Show or something. lol

The gluttony of rap performances: What's the point of performing songs that most of the words are censored. It's annoying, if you're gonna get beeped more than a couple times, change the words or do a different song. Or better just skip it. Most of the rap performances were just a whole lotta Talkin' Loud And Sayin' Nothin'. With the exception of Eminem, I agree.

The little 13 year old girl that sang a cappela before Alicia's first performance sounded better than anybody else in the whole show! Also, the Music Matters artists they let play us out to commercials showed more talent than most of the big names on the stage tonight. Somehow, I missed that part but El Debarge tore it, too!

Chris Brown was hilarious! That was supposed to be funny, right? I don't think so but I laughed my ass off, for real. I was literally on the floor rolling!!

No mention of Garry Shider or GURU passing away?!? Shame on BET. nod

That Trey Songz dude was too awful to be funny... Don't EVER do that again! nod

Stevie was wonderful! nod

Janelle Monae's dancing looked like a cross between 80's Prince & Pee Wee Herman. That was my first time ever seeing Janelle perform and I must say I thought she was going crazy for real. I was so unimpressed. disbelief

Esperanza Spaulding sounded alright, liked the bass, voice sounded a little too much like Minnie Ripperton. Sounding a little too much like Minnie Ripperton should never be considered a bad thing. no no no!

Alicia was alright but not great and what the hell with the sexy piano crawl? Some have said she was trying to look like Vanity or Appolonia, NO, she was doing Prince, he USED to do that shit all the time. Exactly!! That's why I honestly think his comment about the mistakes of his wild days was directed towards her.

Patti... ouch! I know Prince loves her, but, wow! I was laughing, laughing, laughing. Patti is gonna be Patti! What can you do but let her. shrug

No performance by Prince?!? Hell naw!

His speech managed to praise the new generation for talent they don't have and chastise them for being rebellious and wild which they are not. You better PREACH that shit!!! clapping

I'm gonna have to go back in time 4 years and rewatch the Chaka tribute. THAT was how you do a tribute!!

Exactly! I agree with both of U. Except the Trey Songz part. He had no right singing Purple Rain knowing Patti was doing it. That was disrespectful. It took away from the actual tribute which Prince personally had hand picked. I know he may have meant well. But it was horrid to watch..

I really felt Prince speech it was short and to the point. I like the new self improved Prince. He is a much better person now . I know because I been there from almost the beginning. He looked healthy. Loved his shirt in its self promotion way. I remember he did that similarly with Lotusflow3r & 3121.... Imagery is better than just shouting out when ur next cd is coming out.. I Like watching his facial expressions to the Tribute to. He looked completely happy & content with it.. Only thing missing I wish Chaka performed......Oh yeah! & Stevie Wonder gave a heart felt little tribute to

Wouldn't it have been classier of you to just say you didn't like the shirt?

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I wish he would've worn a suit like the one he wore recently in NYC when he performed with Larry.... he looked great that night.

No, im not a big fan of that shirt, but its ok. It works

I am always glad to see men not wear suits. They are not comfortable, it's become the west's version of the white robes worn in the Muslim world. Its another century already let forget about the suit already. especially the tuxedo. such corniness that thing.

The white robes do do pretty comfy tho' but not very practical.

I appreciate your stance on suits, and it's not that I think certain events 'require' a suit be worn...I just thought Prince looked especially good in that white suit he wore in NYC and I thought he looked classy and sharp. This shirt he wore last night at the BET awards..well I'll just say it: I think it's ugly (it might make for cool artwork for the CD, but as a garment it looks terrible) And, beyond that, imo wearing a shirt that has a picture of yourself on it is just plain ridiculous.

I'm sure the comments here are correct in that he was attempting to promote his upcoming CD but at this point in time, most people watching the BETs have no idea about the upcoming CD and so all they got from it was that Prince showed up wearing a loud shirt featuring a picture of himself.

Oh, and one more thing. The state of Black music is HORRIBLE. So Prince, stop lying to these terrible "musicians and performers" because the future of music is in CRAPPY hands if these hack-jobs are it.

[Edited 6/28/10 6:01am]

this deserves 10 stars, I hope something happens soon 4 Prince to wake up

Cause I miss him

I second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth this emotion......come on people you know good and godamn well he said a mouthfull of doggy doo doo by acknowledging some of those performers as being the "talent of the future"....you know that must of tasted NASTY as hell once it came out of his mouth...I cocked my head to the side when he said that and thought I was gonna pull a complete "Linda Blair, around the world black girl" neck moment from the Exorcist with when he apologized for the past antics.....?WHAT!!!! Maybe I'm reading into to it waaay too much...I would love to know what is he REALLY sorry for...the performances....the lyrics.....it sure isn't the look because he is still rocking the androgynous look to the fullest...which I love...I'm not angry at all that he has settled down a bit...but I do miss the dancing and just pure fun he seemed to have playing back in the day....deep sigh.

1.) Trey Songz should have left Purple Rain alone, he totally butchered the song, he did a dis-service 2 Prince on that one. Disrespectful rendition.

2.) Purple Rain is a song that should never be covered. Leave that 1 2 Prince alone.

3.) I loved Janelle rendition of Let's Go Crazy, it's a tribute, and they did well with the linn sounds and the full rock sound

4.) I loved Esperenza's rendition of If I Was Your Girlfriend, it's a tribute, she did a good job, loved the stand up bass

5.) I loved Alicia Key's rendition of Adore, it's a tribute, she did a good job

6.) I HATED Patties rendition of Purple Rain, there was no power to it. the 'wooo hoo hoo hoo' parts were weak. There was no rock edge to the song, Pattie seemed out of breath. She should have done Do Me Baby Uptown Free Pop Life Diamonds & Pearls. But not Purple Rain. On that one I could tell Prince was dissappointed.

Didn't somebody mess with the Beautiful Ones too?

LEAVE Purple Rain alone.

i say that even to prince leave the damn song alone ..many other songs in the arsenal to work with

it was cool that in the video tribute there were clips of the peach video

imo if i was your girlfriend lacked the pop of the bass that songs provides

alicia's rendition was the best and janelle needs to go sit down somewhere

i love patti but she overdid it

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Well he said that "he was wild" when he was younger, and then he went into the ole "don't do what I did" speech. He was indeed very very wild, raunchy, nasty etc. And though we are all here because he has a strong fan base. He would have even had a stronger fan base if he didn't isolate some listeners with the raunchy lyrics. Then you know the whole contracts, name change, slave on the face etc. I guess he was trying to impart some knowledge on folks. That's my guess.

WHAT!! Are you serious? I must disagree that to say "I was wrong in the past about some of my actions" is not being a hypocrite. A hypocrite is someone who purposely continues to do an act that they condemn others of and/or actively and knowingly hide them. I am not a JW, but if he is living to the letter of that platform, then he can't really be a hypocrite. I do believe he is a hypocrite in many ways, but not in this instance of apologizing. However, I don't think a song like chocolate box can be considered to come from a person who professes to strictly worship and praise God.

I do agree with the state of Black music. I think Prince was sparing the feelings of others, or coating them with false confidence to keep them lazy and beneath his standards.

Someday, another Prince has to come. Someone who is an exceptional artist has to be out there. I don't think anyone is out there searching for them though. I think the whole industry has gotten lazy, I think they are waiting for the next Prince to stumble into Amercan Idol or such so that public can pay for the entire star search process. Well, it isn't working.

All of that being said, White music is in its own toilet. Rock is sh*tty, and country music was buried with descent pop.

We are all so full of doody here

I remember Patti used to refer to Prince as her son, back in the day, as apparently that's how she feels about him, like she's his second mother.

Now I never been a Prince basher. Obvioulsy you know that an artist is not always going to do things you agree with. But last night was awful.

Prince should have performed. I feel that it was a slap in the face to every single fan or whoever was watching that we had to endure 2 1/2 hours of performances that were not even great to just see him accept an award. Say what you want but the tradtition of the BET Awards is for each Lifetime Achievement Award Winner to perform. Al Green did it, The O'Jays did it, James Brown did it, and the Isley Brothers even did it.

It's insulting that for whatever reason he didn't perform. No one was watching the tribute to see Alicia Keys, Janelle Monet, Esperenza Spaulding, Patti Labelle, or even Chaka Khan, everyone was watching to see Prince and to see him perform. I would have love to have seen if the Grammy's or the AMAs were giving him a lifetime achievement award if he would have performed. My thing is that you are an artist. That's your job....

It would be different if none of the honorees performed or anything, but that's not the case. The tradition of the awards is to have the person perform! But of course he has to be different. I respect that, but what I have a problem with is that when does it stop being about him and being about the people who support him. I am sure people were looking at their screens and was like what???

And about the statement about not doing what he did back in the day. I respect that. However, replace the motive not the passion, replace the presentation not the excitement, what I am saying is it's cool to do away with the curse words and sexual language but not the loyalty to giving a great show or giving the fans or people who supported you what they deserve.
