Prince loves Janelle. I'm sure he had no trouble whatsoever watching her.
And there is a meaning behind her look. If you don't know what she's about artistically, you're in no position to judge. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Really he likes that crap? It was painful to watch and I kept wishing I was not watching it live, so that I could fast forward through it. It looked like a bad spoof from "In living Color"

I seen it with my own eyes

And also probably because he doesn't want to risk a male singer performing a song of his better than he has or can.
Maxwell would've cleaned house if he was given Adore or Do Me Baby.

Maxwell probably wouldn't have been able to perform if he was asked being that he's on tour. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

Every part of it that had to do with Prince was good except when Trey Songz did Purple Rain. He didn't do a very good job.

Best moment of the night:
Seeing the entire audience sit down all at once at Prince's command.
I'll always remember that.
Love ya, man. Nice speech.. and nice shirt

Someone needs to educate us both, because I don't get it either. As a matter of fact I "so" not get it, that I did a wikipedia search just to see if there was something that I was missing. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Out of the 4 ladies I think Esperanza Spalding had the best performance. Janelle was awful lol Alicia was off-key and extra. Patti was Patti. Crazy and amusing. I enjoyed Prince's speech.
No comment on Goat Songz. He deserves to be hung by his balls for that bullshit.

I sat for three hours watiting to see Prince and it was well worth it. He was still so gorgeous.
All I wanan know is, who was that BALD CHICK next to him? I love a Man who:

After watching the BET awards my love/appreciation for Prince was relit. And ask for Alicia Keys being on the piano pregnant it was emotional, raw and essential she loves Prince and it didn’t matter if she was pregnant or not who knows the next time she'll be asked to do a tribute to him or God forbid never again get the chance to, she took the moment and worked it out, I for one respect the courage and her humility.
Trey Songz was amazing doing purple rain, Beautiful how Prince was almost brought to tears, Janelle Monae got it started (she’s a legend in the making) with Patti Labelle who’s performance was exquisite combined with Alicia keys just setting it off. Esperanza Spalding provided a melodic vibe that was needed for a balance. Alicia made me love Adore, and really listen to the lyrics; she did such an amazing performance and showed you can be sexy and pregnant; she still remained classy so conservative types get the stick out your ass lol.
Princes' speech was sincere, genuine and honest and it was beautiful to see the level of respect the majority of the industry seem to have for him and rightly so. His face when they where performing was as if they brought him back to the state of mind he was in when he was writing it, he looked so touched. He is so sexy.
I think the underlying fact of what his saying is you don’t need to swallow rosaries in your video or be blasphemous to be entertaining just show your talent and be yourself hence "don't follow my mistakes” maybe not necessarily being blasphemous because I always thought one way or the other he tried to glorify God the ways he knew how, but in terms of adding certain lyrics such as in Darling Nicki with with possible intentions of trying to be interesting or have edge. I’ve watched in interviews of him/his stylist, saying at the start of his career he felt needed to dress revealingly or outrageously to take away from his height. Now he accepts himself and if you truly love him you would to. Basically I dedicate my affection for prince through Mariah Carey – All I ever wanted' which is officially branded. And his adore lyric “Loves too weak to define just what you mean to me”
I dont care if he never reads this! Have to express my love somewhere, and I can't afford a shrink (university life lol)

Congrats to my #1 musical hero. The tribute performances were awesome (surprisingly). Hell, it was even great to see El DeBarge's comeback performance too. To my surprise, this actually was a somewhat, half-way decent awards show and not the hot ghetto mess that it usually is.
Trey Songs needs to stop pissing in the sacred "Purple Rain" though. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

I really like her but I swear I have to agree here. It was painful to watch. There's "crazy" as in "Prince crazy" and then there's clown crazy. I turned off the sound and I thought I was watching a circus clown. I'm sorry. "Let love be your perfect weapon..." ~~Andy Biersack

I respect that its most of you guys opinions, but I swear, before people even found out who is performing what most of you got so angry as if you can do better. Trey Songz is an amazing singer, If you cant hear that you are tone deaf and that includes the people on here that I like I don’t f**k , when it comes to real talent lets cut ties now
I mean no one is expecting him to be better than Prince singing Purple Rain THERES JUST NO WAY but damn he’s young and tried to keep the authenticity of the song while making it as real to him as possible AND THAT’S like the rest of them that performed. And lets not forget, its not a music competition or PRINCE WEEK on American Idol it’s a bloody PRINCE tribute, so even if he did a fart rendition of the song ( not really) Its saluting Prince and what he means to him and to most of us. This makes people never want to do Prince songs, every artist gets other artists doing tributes to show they are indeed icons such as, Queen, Michael Jackson, Elvis, The Beatles; this is one of the many ways to make sure no one forgets them. If its left to most of you and your hating asses Prince will more likely not be remembered for generations ahead.

What you are missing is the question that I asked around here, last year, some time, when I first heard Trey's song.
WHY on Planet Earth....would the PRINCE that we all KNOW him to be...just sit back and ALLOW his signature song of songs...be desecrated by the likes of Trey Songz?
When you honestly...answer that question...you see what you were missing! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
If you have the heart to call any tribute to Prince on that stage shitty your already lacking morally and I am not going to waste time debating why but what I will say is the whole moment of him on that stage felt pretty intense and overwhelming besides they where two different set of performances in which Prince might have been backstage (he did say hes been keeping up with the show from his hotel etc) when Trey mixed Purple Rain in to his song. Princes heart seems very loving towards those who respect his work (and you can be smart and say "even rapists"). He might feel a little bad for not mentioning Trey, but I highly doubt it was on purpose why he didnt mention him or that any of them will lose any sleep or didnt meet backstage afterwords.

Here's the thing. Trey wasn't even a part of the Prince Tribute. He decided to sing Purple Rain on his own.
Now, why BET agreed to let him sing the song knowing full well that just 10 minutes later Patti Labelle would be singing it is beyond me.
It's one of the reasons why BET gets made fun of on a Daily Basis because crappy organization like that.
They should have denied him from signing the song. Not because he wouldn't have sung it well, but because someone else was already going to sing it. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

Girl, STOP! The only one tone deaf is you. Especially, if you consider Trey Songz an amazing singer. Seriously. The boy can't sing worth a damn and he sounds like a goat. I don't even know how he got a record deal.

Wow I was actually really impressed with the show! The 2009 awards stank until the O'Jays performed with the exception of Monica. I was shocked by how many of those performers can not sing live. But last night...
Everybody could sing. Maybe the sound system was better this year.
As far as award shows go that one is by far the best I've seen in a long time. Nice work BET.

Yes, I have the heart to say that his tribute was shitty and Prince obviously agrees. Lacking morally?
Anyway, he wasn't even a part of the tribute. Prince hand-picked Janelle, Patti, Alicia and Esperanza to perform that's all. Trey chose to put 'Purple Rain' in his performance for some odd reason.
