Why do you think those mags do not have P on the cover? Jan Werner the owner of Rolling Stone said a few years ago that covers with black artist do not sell well. Don't you think it is better for P to be on the front of some mag than none because someone thinks his face effects sales.
I think some of the white fans need to understand that the black community has been behind P since the begining of his career. His music current and old still gets play on urban stations. He is not going to turn his back on black music so you need to accept it and move on with your life.

I respect your opinion, but I think it is, to quote you, "stupid and ridiculous" to assume that just because a multi-culti crew opts to reinforce images and ideologies of whiteness to the exclusion of all others that it somehow changes the cause and effect. I don't care who makes the decisions, the reason for it and the result is the same. I also think it is "stupid and ridiculous" to think that diversity on magazine covers should be a "growing" process or "progress," as you stated, in 2010.
I have worked as a journalist (mainly editing but also writing for magazines and newspapers) for more than 15 years for several publications, and I know what goes on behind closed doors as well as who the decision makers are. I have always fought in editorial meetings for more diverse covers and features in mainstream (white) publications. It is an ongoing struggle every month, and I haven't seen much growing in that area in the 15 years that I have been in the industry. Non-whites usually do not make covers unless they are mega stars who have large white fan bases. That's just a fact. How many mainstream/white covers did you see Taraji Henson on prior to "The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons?" How many have you seen her on since that film and Oscar nomination?
Another thing that you should know since you are "a young woman of colour " (whatever that means) who works in the industry, is that magazines are often defined by their target audiences. That demographic also dictates who advertises in those magazines. Therefore, while today's PC world might not use terms like "white" or "black" to describe their focus or demographic, they do have terms that indicate the same thing. Instead of saying white or non-white, they say "mainstream" and "urban." However, the implication is the same. [Edited 6/25/10 23:30pm] perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

UK mags ain't gonna put him on the cover. Prince on the cover = your magazine having its worst month in ages. Dido is also killer.
And in-depth interviews? Ain't gonna happen. © Bart Van Hemelen

You mean like when the Mail carried Prince's album and had their best circulation figures ever? Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot, you only deal in facts, eh?
Prove your statements! An indisputable fact about why UK mags won't put him on the cover. A fact which shows a magazine having "its worst month" by having Prince/Dido on the cover. And a fact supporting why an in-depth interview is never going to happen. You demand this of everyone else - now its your turn ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Can't a black man do interviews for 2 black magazines? Hot damned....not this topic again. We just went through this crap with the whole Ebony issue. If I was Prince's manager, I'd have him do interviews for every last black magazine out there, that way non-blacks will pick them up and read a thing or two about black culture.
Heck Prince will make his rounds to non black mainstream magazines as well. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

My gosh at the genuine ignorance. Well this is a good time as ever to pick up Ebony and Jet and read those "National Enquirer" articles for yourself.
I swear, I don't know how "some of yall" who feel like this "justify" your love for this black man to yourselves. I guess those who feel this way just look at his skin complexion and say "heck he don't look that black too me" so he's "aiight" in my book. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

I don't think it's stupid or ridiculous at all. Those magazines are not owned by black people, and they cater to white mainstream America. Obviously blacks fit into mainstream America so they can identify with the articles etc. But they are white mainstream magazines. Shoot we see the finished product of the magazines both whats on the cover and behind it and we dont gotta work for the magzine to see it's contents...and those magazines are white mainstream mags. Sorry. Some may tend to be a little bit more "inclusive" than others but that's all behind the front cover and the story remains the same. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Yes, free new album = cover story. Got any other imbecilic comparisons in that bag of yours?
Read the mags. Word did an overview on one of their anniversaries, and said the Prince and Dido covers were newsstand poison. Read the same thing in another UK mag. Or look at the facts: how many times has Prince had a cover story in those mags. If he was selling mags, they'd put him on every other month. Just look at the back issues of mags like Mojo and Uncut: I wouldn't be surprised there's at least one Beatles cover and one Pink Floyd cover for each mag in the past year. Why? Because those copies sell. Prince doesn't, in fact he does the opposite.
One of the Word back issues. Go look it up. It's in print. Maybe I've got the mag here somewhere, if I ever come accross it I'll take a pic and post it.
In-depth interviews ain't gonna happen because they've never happened. And certainly not recently. Princ einterviews = Prince babbling on about a handful of prepared topics. Go read the interviews he did over the course of two days to promote Emancipation: same shit over and over. A few reporters complained that Prince kept saying things that in no way answered their questions. Same deal with pics: always the same poses.
The reason I say "prove it", is when people post proven lies and nonsense. I don't lie. © Bart Van Hemelen

You pretty much hit the target on that, because it certainly seems that way with some fans. Like Prince said in Ebony "We come in all colors and it should be reflected that way everywhere around the globe." Judging from Desiree2006's ridiculous statement, proves some fans still need to be re-educated on the topic and various cultures/lifestyles/ethnicities of Black people around the globe. Secondly, there's no reason why Prince has to be questioned or answer to anyone, as to why he agreed to be interviewed by a magazine highlighting the lifestyles/culture/historic information about Blacks in general. Quite frankly, I think some fans have this strange impression that they own him, and that he has to answer to them for everything that he does in his life.

You know...I never ever suspected that Prince was anything other than black. I never ever thought that he was bi-racial not even after he put that "notion" into his movie. I was 13 when Purple Rain came out and I was like "yo what's with that white mother thing" cause he's black. Maybe because I'm black, I can just call them how I see them. But some of this is Prince's fault. He plays games with people regarding his race. He says one thing in Ebony, but recently in an article the interviewer (short version) said that he was black, and Prince held up his arm to the interviewer's arm and said "am I"? So he takes white folks on a ride and some of them fall for it. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?
