Why does there have to be a soundcheck? I don't have a songcheck. You don't have a clothescheck.

Nah, the bi-racial story was pushed by Prince himself from day one.

Prince told Rolling Stone (after the release of Dirty Mind) that he was the son of a "half-Black father and Italian mother."

Congratulations to Prince and his musical legacy as well as his profound contributions to the music industry. Finally he is getting his due, but there are mixed feelings coming over me as to how this whole thing is gonna play out on the night of June 27th. I don't know why I'm feeling this way but something is rubbing me the wrong way about the tribute and performances. I hope BET's Lifetime Achievement Award tradition is broken and they can have his proteges honor him. I'm also disappointed at how his Lifetime Achievement page is laid out on BET's website (wrong dates, pictures, misleading information and missing higlights of his career)...

Naah....see you're not looking at the "bigger picture" the directors of the film was about "attracting" a much, broader audience by making his parents a bi-racial couple. Had they made his parents all black it may have played to one specific demographic and limited their intake of the cheese they were hoping to gain from the film. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. They were quite smart to do that to be honest, because even during and after the film, his racial identity kept quite a few folks "wondering and interested" and wanting to know more, besides the fact they were amazed by his performance as an artist in the movie. The curiosity just added to the mystery of an artist who did not talk much to the media or give many interviews back then.
It is obvious, the creators of the film was about taking an up-and-coming musician who had already crossed racial lines with his music, who appeared bi-racial, was handsome, played bad-ass rock guitar, had people questioning his sexuality, etc., and knew they could attract a much wider audience and get those dollars banging at the box office, and making the actors who played his parents, a bi-racial couple, it would bring in both black, white, hispanics, etc. It was about the "$$$$" . They knew exactly what they were doing, and it worked, which is why many fans today are still questioning his racial identity today based on that particular part of the film. Hey, you could hold it against him and stay mad at him for it if you want to, but even Prince had to know the deal.
No sense holding a grudge about that 26 years after the movie, seeing how all of them already got paid and audience members got played. [Edited 6/15/10 12:43pm]

Indeed, right from the onset he distanced himself from being Black, perhaps to avoid being pigeonholed by critics. He began to say he was Black at the height of his war with Warner Bros., wearing "Slave" on his cheek and other acts of folly.

You know I saw on the net yesterday that the "Purple Rain" movie would be playing today around 3:30 pm in the U.S. and I believe 12am early Wednesday morning, but it didn't say what channel. [Edited 6/15/10 13:05pm]

its not a matter of about time
isnt he the one (and this could be a rumor) that he said black people shouldnt get a channel dedicated to our music (music invented by black people?)
anyway thats great! | |

While I do think Prince is deserving of some Lifetime Achievement Awards, I simply can't applaud this one.
I cannot stand what BET did to Black Entertainment! I wouldn't watch that drivel if they dedicated the whole show to Prince and put The Revolution back together to do the tributes!
BET!!!
Oh but I will be watching for the..."OMG! They call that a tribute to Prince?" ...posts on the night it airs.
Now that'll be entertainment! [Edited 6/15/10 13:30pm] I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

To be fair he intentionally confused the press in order to not be pigeonholed as "just another black R&B artist". Put simply; the man was tryin to cross-over. He even lied about his age. And it all worked. I personally don't think he was ever "ashamed" of being black like some folks on here believe, he was simply trying to transcend and rise to another level of artistry.
Yet it is true that he became more comfortable expressing his "blackness" starting with the NPG era and truth be told he hasn't looked back since..

C'mon...it's BET. Were you expecting a very high degree of accuracy and sophistication?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I agree with you Vumiko, it seems he was just trying to get paid and not be labeled as just another "r&b artist". I think once he reached the level of where he was comfortable in his career as well as the fame, is when he became more comfortable with expressing his racial identity in his own way, but I think by that time, many fans were already attached to his "80s" image. Yes. People need to realize PR was a "story." Prince was not a physical abuser, his dad didnt own guns, Wendy n Lisa did not write Purple Rain, Pricne was not "struggling against The Time" (lol). The only people who thought Princes moms was white in real life were bandwagoners. DSOUL if youy mad at Prince for that shit and still bveen a fan for 25 years after the fact that that say more about YOU then some entertainer in the music biz tryna cross over back in the day.

BET has no cred. They nominated Justin Bieber best new artist.
Don't tell my daughter I said that, she loves the kid.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

This kind of reminds me of the Diana Ross and the Supremes story when Berry Gordy wanted to get the Supremes to "crossover" with their music, once they achieved a large, black fan base. [Edited 6/15/10 13:01pm]

If BET does this right they will get The Time and Sheila E to be a part. A Shelia E led Revolution like at the Family Jam would be hot. I can see Maxwell, Robert Randolph and why not Janet Jackson. I know his performance will bring the house down. Who ever said Prince has lost it - has lost it. The Kid's still got game!

Janet being part of the P tribute would be soooo coool. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

People are expecting BET to do a Prince tribute justice? Did you see what they did to MJ last year?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
has prince ever gone on bet to promote his music? if he cant give his lover tavis an interview then i guess he wont talk to anyone else. he made one appearance on their award show and he going to get a lifetime award? did he even talk to bet during his purple rain days or was he too busy being mtv bitch to pay them a vist.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
To be fair, that was put together at the last minute.
I'd like to see you put on a show like that together in 3 days.
Every other time they do tributes for their Lifetime Achievement Award have been great.
Like the Chaka Khan Tribute, and the surpise Michael Jackson appearance for James Brown's Award.
BET doesn't get a whole lot right, but they get this right. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

Maybe you're right! My stomach turns everytime I see what BET dishes out. They haven't been the same since the early 90's! Check me out and add me on:

Well, that was a last-minute plan....They certainly could have done better, but that tribute show was not supposed to happen at all. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

Exactly....they should've just left the show the way it was originally because the 85% of the show was just full choas and bullcrap. Everything from Jamie Foxx's disrespectful and unruly opening and ridiculous outfit changes to the profanity that was used...it was just wrong on all levels. Check me out and add me on:
