Prince makes it clear that Jehovah's Witnesses don't make great music and aren't interesting people. Plus they believe something as fake as anything, so they can't be that smart, either.

"Hot Summer" also has two of Prince's contrived lyrics...

"hug and a pound"

"shoobedooh-ie!"

All that's missing is the patented "chain around waist" line.

Plus it sounds like Cinnamon Girl and Shake!... which is fine, because Prince builds many songs off of the same style. However both of those songs have better lyrics than Hot Summer. Prince has a lot of trouble writing good lyrics and quality bridges -- all 3 of his 2010 songs show his decline in writing ability. This song also employs the same technique as So Far, So Pleased... a long musical/guitar interlude instead of a real compelling bridge, then back to some dumb lyrics. At least Manic Monday and his 80's pop songs sounded like complete songs. Is Shelby on this song? That's the only way it could be even more terrible. Whoever is singing, should be deleted and the song would be better, IMHO.

Don't split hairs with me. You said "From now on it's a Janelle trackwith Prince on backing vox. cuz, come on, let's be honest here, it's not like you can hear prince except for on headphones and in a few lines anyway." which is ridiculous. So just because you can't hear Prince much, it's just not his song. End of story. It's just not. It's his name on it, and he played on it, and wrote it. But it's not his track. It's like saying Kevin Bacon wasn't in Footloose because it was only silhouette in some shots, so it could have been anyone.

No one has yet said it's her on the track. It'd be great if it was her; I like her. Yet if she's not, you're pretty much moving with blinders on, aren't you? Yes, no? It sounds more like Shelby J., but time will tell.

Can you imagine someone saying, "Justin Timberlake used some of the Minneapolis sound on 'Sexy Ladies', so I'm just going to consider that a track from The Time." See how silly that sounds? You're probably giving me the whofarted eye as you read that, but what's good for the goose.

Yes, ou can believe what you want, but why wallow in an untruth? Is it so bad if it is Shelby J. on the track?

look, i'll be honest with you, i just don't like you. i didn't read beyond the "don't split hair with me" bit, since that already made me feel queezy.

i've taken to not reading your replies to anything anymore since it saves me a lot of aggro,

but in this case you quoted me so i thought i'd reply.

but do us both a favor and pretend i don't exist, and i'll continue to do the same for you from

now on.

And how can someone who never goes outside write a song called "Hot Summer"? If I want to listen to summer songs, I'll listen to Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. I'll listen to Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, California Girls, 409, and all those other great Beach Boys "SONGS" instead of "Hot Summer". That's real music, timeless, heartfelt, meaningful. Prince's 3 songs in 2010 make it seem like Prince doesn't know anything about music. Someone at "The Current" should have requested a better song as a gift. Is everyone so afraid of telling him a certain song sucks?

Frankly, I'm embarrassed for him lately. Such rubbish coming from one of the most musically creative minds in the modern world! All the glamour photo shoots, the hair, the makeup. When is he going to grow up? It is very unattractive for a person to act, behave and try to look much, much younger than they really are.

I don't see that the pic in the red chair is Prince trying to look younger. It's just a fly picture. Anything else is you projecting. I will tell you this, I will always look fly whether I'm 95 or 25. And I wont be "trying" to look younger, I'll just be fly.

I've listened 2 the song a few times because a new song

always needs a few listens.

The beginning does remind me of the guitar demo.

The rest sounds like the rock-light/pop he did on Planet Earth..

so don't ask me wich song because after a dozen of listens

I never have listened 2 the album again.

I just don't like his light-rock sound and Planet Earth was

such a dissapointment 4 me. And I've always been a fan who

always defended his new releases (I still consider Musicology & 3121 as good/great Prince albums!).

I listened 2 Cause&effect once again and it gave me the same feeling;

I don;t like it but 2 those who do....enjoy!!

(Question: I was listening 2 Electric Chair and Gett Off and I wondered:

how come these songs are 20 years old and sound fresher and have

a better, solid production than his latest work?? What happend 2

the studio-wizard called Prince?? )

Someone make him stop !!

Change the locks on his recording studios .... anything to stop new music.

He's musically dead, and has been for years.

^^I'm starting 2 think the same thing...2 bad but

I will always respect him 4 all the pleasure and good times he brought me with his music!! And lately I've seen footage from the Musicology tour,4 the first time, and I was surprised how good those shows were.

DMSR or The Question of U...damn,this is why I'm still a fan!!!

It's hard 2 understand how this great live artist can't make this kind

of music on cd anymore...

Anybody else think Prince is killing his career extremely quickly?!

The past 3 released singles have been shocking to say the least.... Just remember this is a guy who created Purple rain, Around the world in a day, sign o' the times, lovesexy..Etc etc... and Now purple and gold, cause and effect and now this piece of shite.... And I thought the 90's were bad!!

yeahthat

First half of the 1990s ( 90-95) wasn't bad though, it was quite good actually, imo.

But you are completely right - "Hot Summer", oh no, it makes me wanna cry.

Is this the artist who made brilliant music like PR, Parade, SOTT or Lovesexy.

I feel really bad - ashamed - as a Prince fan, "Hot Summer", with "Purple & Gold" is among his worst songs. My expectations to a forthcoming album can't get any lower. Where is the bad ass disco-pop-funky-rock-groove of Prince music - the music he used to create????

....and releasing such crappy songs lately only shows that Prince has no good judgement anymore. I feel sad, The King Of Sexual Funk, the sexy vibe of PRINCE is gone. Now is only formula and cliché... this makes me really sad. neutral

A happy little ditty that's perfect for the beach. cool

(The organ chord stabs remind me of "Shake!"

OMG, thanks for saying that - Shake - it's been driving me mad where I'd heard those stabs before!

At least I won't lie awake all night wondering smile

Can't say I'm keen on the song though - not much thought or imagination seems to have gone into it.

When you compare it to his other stuff it pales in comparison.

My heart is breaking when I say this, but I feel the fire may have gone out of his belly after all this time cry

Bad example. Brian Wilson never surfed and was basically a recluse confined to his house yet he wrote a ton of songs about surfing and being out in the warmth of the sun.

After a shitload of repeated listens, I really dig this track. It is what it is - Purple Pop. It doesn't surprise me that I like it, since The Morning After gets repeated listens too. Is the song a classic? No. But it sho 'nuff do be cookin' in my book.

Remember... Don't hate. Masturbate.

Anyhoo, I made an iTunes cover for my iPod for shits & giggles and thought I'd share:

How so? My point was that both songs are lyrically very simple.

nice track. I also enjoyed cause/effect. the responses here have been hysterical to downright lunacy. I've always wondered what people would think if he released Venus De Milo, Cream, D&P or TMBGITW in 2010. Probably not too responsive either, though may say differently in hindsight. I can easily hear this song on '90s P album (D&P era).
