I can't stand these female vocals on Purple and Gold and Hot Summer. Chelsea, and these new backup singers aren't good at all.

.... which just further proves Wall's original point.

How so? My point was that both songs are lyrically very simple.

Wall was contrasting Prince song writing ability then and now, with BODP and Hot Summer, I assumed you were saying S&C is simple like Hot Summer, but I was saying S&C is more like BODP since it has some weight behind it, considering the story of the songs inception, i.e. that it's about a mentally challenged girl. Where as Hot Summer is just about, a hot summer.

Oh! the song is a good song it is better then "Cause & Effect" which believe or not some kids liked the song.

If they make a video it will be very nice "Hot Summer" if Prince puts it out it will be the summer song.

Thanks You

Bad example. Brian Wilson never surfed and was basically a recluse confined to his house yet he wrote a ton of songs about surfing and being out in the warmth of the sun.

They are still much much better summer songs than "Hot Summer".

But we are talking about Prince new single it reminds "Hot Summer". of something...

Prince makes it clear that Jehovah's Witnesses don't make great music and aren't interesting people. Plus they believe something as fake as anything, so they can't be that smart, either.

"Hot Summer" also has two of Prince's contrived lyrics...

"hug and a pound"

"shoobedooh-ie!"

All that's missing is the patented "chain around waist" line.

Plus it sounds like Cinnamon Girl and Shake!... which is fine, because Prince builds many songs off of the same style. However both of those songs have better lyrics than Hot Summer. Prince has a lot of trouble writing good lyrics and quality bridges -- all 3 of his 2010 songs show his decline in writing ability. This song also employs the same technique as So Far, So Pleased... a long musical/guitar interlude instead of a real compelling bridge, then back to some dumb lyrics. At least Manic Monday and his 80's pop songs sounded like complete songs. Is Shelby on this song? That's the only way it could be even more terrible. Whoever is singing, should be deleted and the song would be better, IMHO.

where are you getting this all from Wow!!!!! shelby j is a great singer and very soulful. And those lyrics are good. Shelby J has a very powerful voice i think you need some rest,

I bet there are millions of fans that are wishing Michael Jackson could release a little lazy piece of shit pop song this morning.

When the best thing you can say about an artists latest output is "at least he's not dead", you know you're clutching at straws.

I haven't heard the song but I know from the past bitchfests that the same shit is going to be said.

Mofos will either love it do death or it'sthe worst shit ever put on record.

Bottom line is I wish Mike was still here on this planet and we still have Prince.

Enjoy him while you can.

Only a fool will think that he will reach 1984-88 status again.

It's official - after a day of listening to it, I really like Hot Summer. It's insanely catchy. I also liked Shake! and Vavoom, two songs it reminds me of.

Can anyone tell me what "pound" means: "they both deserve a hug and a pound"? Maybe I should have asked this a long time ago - I didn't understand it when Prince used it in "Props n Pounds" either.

Also, the drum pattern reminds me of Sheila E and the background voice kinda sounds like her to.. Could it be? We don't know who is playing on this, do we?

I love when fans say "After spinning this song ten or so times... I really like it."

You can coerce yourself to like any song if you play it multiple times in a row and get familiar with it.

I guess it's referring to hugging a woman, and "pounding" a man's hand (a fist-to-fist form of greeting):

I think Prince may be better off writing about things he cares and believes in regardless of sales, and stay away from trying to have a younger pop song on the radio. We saw how well that panned out in the 90's. People can tell this is just going through the motions to have a pop summer song.

I would much rather have him sing about his chem-trails and colonized mind than a disingenuous manufactured song by a 52 year old man about a hot summer night, that is unless he had something interesting to say about a hot summer night, other than just an excuse to awkwardly force that phrase in a song.

Regardless of the message, i would much rather listen to an artist that has something new to share lyrically or musically than just trying to pander to what the artist believes the audience wants to hear (MplSound) Its especially painful from an artist who's claim to fame is in part by creating a different sonic and lyrical style to an artist that seems desperate to fit in with the kids in the school yard.

[Edited 6/8/10 5:48am]

I agreed you about that he has been doing well the way he has been writing ,but i guess the song what he wanted to do. I don't think most artistof Prince's ablity to write and composer musc some

and the chem-trals he could write about an enivormental cd with those things you discuss

Really, I have listenned to it, once, twice, several, I haven't changed my mind, I don't like it..

I can't get sed to it

Sounds like a simple west coast song played by "beginners", some starting band trying to scratch on guitars, sure for a beginner it's fine, but not for Prince himself, such a great musician..

There surely is a lack of inspiration, or a lack of Passion..

Please don't add this song to an album..

I am not knowledgable about drum patterns and such to remark on that part of your comment, but the female vocals on Hot Summer sound absolutely nothing like Sheila E to me.

As FOR those female background vocals: I commented yesterday that the background vocals are the primary aspect of the song that - for me - makes the song less enjoyable. Upon further listenings, I can report that while I still think the song is okay for what it is, and it isn't 'growing on me' either. neutral I want to like it more than I do, I just....don't. I guess you can say I "like" it, but I don't "like like" it. This song and I will remain friends but nothing more.

I think the main reason I dislike the female vocals is because this song is supposed to be light and airy and fluffy and summery, but that chick's voice is just way too BIG AND LOUD AND OVERPOWERING for the tone of this tune - it doesn't "fit" the intended vibe of the song, in my opinion. Those background vocals to me are the equivalent of wearing heavy, itchy woolen tights with a floaty, gauzy sundress.

I think it will be a revamped remix version of the new mega hit single "Hot Summer" released with Prince replacing the vocals with his unique multi layered vocals soon.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Whatever he is doing with the guitar in certain parts -- that sorta ethereal, almost "wailing" sound. Sounds unique.

Other than that, pretty typical.

This song really got stuck in my head, the lyrics are very interesting imho, they really HAVE some content for those who are aware what's going on in the world right now (global warming/spirals etc)

It shocks me that even his own "fans" don't take the time to really get the lyrics, even on other boards the lyrics get a full analyses.
